Michigan - Coronavirus COVID-19

  • #361
My BF's Dad passed away last night from COVID. He was 87, so there were underlying conditions. He lived in a VERY remote area of MI.

They are having a funeral Friday and my BF wants me to come. I told my two grown sons and they said NOOOOOOO MOM. Love them for their protectiveness, but I think they are right.

I'm glad the governor shut things down again. JS and IMO
Good for your sons!! They are looking out for Mom. I am sorry your BF lost his dad. That said, I would also have him quarantine upon his return before he sees you.

Michigan restaurant association files lawsuit against state’s health director to block ban on dine-in service

COVID-19 restrictions aimed at limiting indoor gatherings

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association (MRLA) has filed a lawsuit against Robert Gordon, in his capacity as the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) director, to block the ban on dine-in service.

Plaintiffs Heirloom Hospitality Group LLC and H.I.H. Inc. d/b/a Suburban Inns have joined MRLA in the lawsuit. They’re seeking an emergency preliminary injunction to resume on-premise indoor food and beverage consumption.

Starting Wednesday and lasting through Dec. 8, Michigan residents will only be able to order takeout from restaurants, unless outdoor seating is available. That is under the Michigan Department of Health and Human Service’s new COVID-19 rules...

Restaurants file federal suit over Michigan's indoor dining ban

Michigan restaurants and hospitality groups have sued in federal court against the state of Michigan for a Sunday order shuttering indoor dining at restaurants and bars for the next three weeks to curb COVID-19 infections.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday in Michigan's Western District contends the Whitmer administration violated the businesses' right to equal protection under the law, the right to due process and the commerce clause reserving interstate and foreign commerce regulation to Congress.

The suit also argued the state Department of Health and Human Services' order violates the state Constitution's separation of powers and non-delegation clauses. It asked the court to deem the order an "unconstitutional taking" under the U.S. and state constitutions...

I'm not at all surprised by this lawsuit. Most Michigan restaurants were shut down for several months, with many closing permanently. I'm sure there have been a few bad actors who did not comply with specific COVID restrictions, but the three restaurants that DH and I visited in the last five months have had exemplary protocols in place to keep staff and patrons safe. I don't think everyone should be punished for the sins of a few. I hope there can be a compromise to keep restaurants and/or bars open as long as they are in compliance with state health regulations. Michigan needs to get its economy back on track, and the restaurant closures for the next three weeks could be devastating for businesses already struggling to get back on their feet. JMO

Detroit's Thanksgiving Day parade upended by city health department

Detroit — The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed yet another victim: Detroit's Thanksgiving Day parade, at least as a live event on Woodward Avenue.

The city's chief public health officer, Denise Fair, made the announcement Thursday, citing the state's new restrictions that prohibit outdoor gatherings of more than 25 people — a problem for an operation with 800 and 22 floats.

The parade, officially known as America's Thanksgiving Day Parade presented by Gardner-White, "will have to be done virtually this year," Fair said in a statement...

Restaurant ban in Michigan gets mixed response from industry (clickondetroit.com)

LANSING, Mich. – A Michigan mandate that has forced dine-in restaurants and bars to close for the second time this year is getting a mixed response from industry leaders that worry the move could hurt businesses.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced the new order earlier this month as the number of cases and hospitalizations continue to rise. State law allows the agency to prohibit gatherings during an epidemic, MLive.com reported...

WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The West Bloomfield School District will remain in a totally remote instruction model for all students now through Jan. 15, 2021, the district announced Tuesday.

Andiamo owner writes letter urging Michigan restaurants to defy shutdown orders, reopen (clickondetroit.com)

‘We need to band together and fight this closure.’

The owner of Andiamo wrote a letter to Michigan restaurants urging them to defy Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the state health department’s COVID-19 shutdown orders and reopen.

Joe Vicari called on fellow restauranteurs to join Andiamo in reopening Dec. 9 if Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services extend the current three-week “pause.”...

I wonder if there's a list somewhere of the places that are actively fighting this shutdown, bc I'd like to make sure not to ever give them a red cent in the future.

I keep checking to see what other restaurant owners might join Vicari in his efforts to fight the shutdown but haven't found anything other than the Joe Vicari Restaurant Group who will likely send representatives to the meeting tomorrow. Hopefully, local media will cover the informational session in Warren. From Joe Vicari's letter to Michigan restaurant owners: ...If you are interested in being part of the United Group of Michigan Restaurant Owners, please join us on Dec. 3 at 1:00 at Andiamo Banquet Center on 14 Mile and Van Dyke for an informational meeting...

Gov. Whitmer says kids need to be in school (radio.com)

Restaurant owners across the state have complained about the three-week dining pause that, they say, could potentially push them out of business.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer tackled that topic, and more, live on WWJ 950 Wednesday morning, where she said anytime multiple households are inside together -- it's a problem...

What Gov. Whitmer said about chance of Michigan’s stricter COVID-19 rules extending past 3 weeks (clickondetroit.com)

‘We’ve not predetermined anything,’ Whitmer says

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan officials have implemented stricter COVID-19 regulations for three weeks, but will the order be extended beyond that timeframe? Gov. Gretchen Whitmer responded to that question.

Michigan is more than halfway through the three-week “pause,” which began Nov. 18 and is set to expire Dec. 8...

Michigan health director favors latest ruling in restaurants COVID restrictions lawsuit (clickondetroit.com)

‘Public health experts from around the nation and world say these types of actions must be taken’

The following statement is from Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Director Robert Gordon on the latest favorable court ruling in the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association (MRLA) lawsuit:

“We are happy that today’s ruling keeps in place measures that will save lives by limiting specific indoor gatherings that greatly increase the risk of COVID-19 spread. The science is settled: public health experts from around the nation and world say these types of actions must be taken to prevent the health care system from being overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases. These protocols on specific indoor gatherings, along with wearing face masks, social distancing and frequent handwashing, give Michigan a fact-based approach to slow the spread of COVID-19 so we can return to a strong economy and get back to normal safely as soon as we can.”...

^ Governor Whitmer will be speaking at the same time that the restaurant meeting takes place in Warren. I just heard a report on WWJ radio indicating that Joe Vicari expects about 100 Michigan restaurant owners who represent 150 restaurants to attend the meeting. After this morning's ruling on the lawsuit that sought to reopen Michigan restaurants immediately, it's doubtful that Mr. Vicari's efforts will prevail. It seems likely that the Governor will extend the current 3-week pause beyond December 8. Very unfortunate for Michigan's economy and bar/restaurant owners :( Whitmer will not get a second term as Governor. JMO
