Michigan health departments urge patience on COVID vaccines: ‘Demand is overwhelming’ (clickondetroit.com)

Demand much higher than supply right now

Michigan has moved into its next phase of COVID-19 vaccinations, but that doesn’t mean every person who is eligible can get an appointment at this very moment.

Michigan is in the process of increasing vaccine distribution to local health departments and providers as they prepare to offer appointments to eligible patients. But the demand is much higher than the supply...

Indoor dining will 'likely' reopen on Feb. 1, Michigan group says (detroitnews.com)

Lansing — An association that represents bars and restaurants in Michigan says it expects Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to announce Wednesday a plan to allow indoor dining to resume Feb. 1.

The Michigan Licensed Beverage Association posted on Facebook Tuesday that the Feb. 1 plan will give owners time to work with their supply chains and figure out staffing. The plan will likely include limited capacity and a curfew, the association added...

I was hoping that DH and I could go out to dinner on my birthday (January 27), but it looks like we'll be doing takeout from Picano's like we did on New Year's Eve. What the Governor has done to the restaurant business in Michigan is shameful.

I just don’t get it. I understand making tough decisions to save lives. I don’t understand making decisions with no scientific basis. She originally said she felt activity that one had to remove masks was unsafe. Now she opens things that don’t require a mask. It almost seems she is trying to prove a point and the restaurants are the pawn. Sounds like a power thing. This is MOO of course. It truly wish she would explain herself on this subject.

Can Michiganders be confident that COVID-19 order won’t be extended beyond Jan. 31? (clickondetroit.com)

MDHHS order in effect through at least Jan. 31

LANSING, Mich. – After announcing that the COVID-19 restrictions in Michigan would be extended through the end of the month, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was asked how people can be confident there won’t be another extension.

Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday that the order, which was set to expire Friday (Jan. 15), has been revised and extended until Jan. 31.

“What is going to change between now and Feb. 1 where people can be confident it’s not going to be extended past that, just yet again?” Whitmer was asked...

No more pauses! Michigan has basically been shut down since the middle of March, 2020 - almost an entire year. Enough already!

So sorry for you guys. DW and I eat out all the time. Some places seem very safe and some are back in 2019 mode. We aren't concerned, but our niece has walked out of places that don't look safe. I still have a hard time with why adults are allowed to make those decisions in some places, but not others.

The incremental extensions are ridiculous! I feel like our Governor teases us with crumbs and hopes that we'll continue to trust her decisions. Governor Whitmer continually refers to data, science, and studies but doesn't indicate where the information comes from. Does the public have access to the data, science, and studies? I would like to see this for myself because I feel like we are being told only what GW wants us to hear, which may or may not be factual. I've read about possible new strains of the virus in Michigan, so that will probably influence the decision to extend the "pause" for another indeterminate period of time. I think it's time to let people decide for themselves what is safe or not safe for them to resume their normal lives. The restraints and restrictions can't go on forever. It's already gone on far too long. JMO

I agree! I can see this new strain being her next excuse. We accomplished the goal, our hospitals are not over capacity at this time. I have no link sorry! So this is my opinion based on where I work. Take it with a grain of salt as a smaller hospital or maybe even ones in the inner cities may be more crowded. MOO
That said, it is time to let people decide! There are a lot of reasons we spiked in November December but I saw no evidence it was based on indoor dining . My thoughts, it WAS indoor dining. Like family parties in homes. Not restaurants. We punished restaurants because that is what she can control. There are a lot of moving parts. And I will fully support any restrictions based on science. The science I personally practice is hand washing, mask wearing and social distancing and vaccines. MOO.

Several neighbors in our subdivision usually have large holiday gatherings, but there was no sign of anything like this throughout the holiday season. That said, on Sunday, January 3rd, our next-door neighbors to the south had a family gathering before they left for a couple of months in Florida. Four vehicles were parked in front of their home and ours, so that means that a total of five households were there for several hours. Two of the vehicles were their adult children and grandchildren, but we didn't know who the other guests were. The couple are in their late 70s; he might even be 80 now. I understand that they wanted to spend time with their family members prior to leaving for Florida, but it seems like a major risk for people in their age group. They likely had to stop along the way for meals and overnight accommodations, and the virus is still rampant in the sunshine state. We hope they remain healthy and safe.

Gov. Whitmer outlines plan to jumpstart Michigan’s economy, end COVID-19 pandemic (clickondetroit.com)

Gretchen Whitmer unveils ‘MI COVID Recovery Plan’

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer outlined her plan Tuesday to jumpstart the state’s economy and help end the COVID-19 pandemic.

“To help grow and strengthen our economy, we must provide crucial support for our families, small businesses, and frontline workers,” Whitmer said. “The MI COVID Recovery Plan will help small businesses get through the winter, help us put more shots in arms and ramp up vaccine distribution, and get our kids back on track in school. It’s the right thing to do to protect public health and jumpstart our economy, and I’m ready to work with the legislature to get it done.”...

Whitmer unveils $5.6B recovery plan targeted at schools, businesses (detroitnews.com)

Lansing — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer unveiled Tuesday a wide-ranging "COVID Recovery Plan" that features $225 million for economic development programs, $2 billion for schools and an extension of unemployment benefits.

The Democratic governor announced the plan during a press conference, setting up a potential high-stakes fight with the GOP-controlled Legislature, which controls the state's finances and has threatened to use the power to spur Whitmer to lift restrictions on restaurants.

The new plan came four days after financial experts unveiled rosier than previously expected revenue projections for the state. About 90% of the $5.6-billion plan will come from the federal government...

Indoor dining at restaurants in Michigan will reopen Feb. 1 (detroitnews.com)

Lansing — Indoor dining at restaurants in Michigan will resume on Feb. 1, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on Friday morning.

Whitmer announced a new epidemic order that will allow indoor dining and non-residential gatherings of up to 10 people from two households. The new order will last three weeks once it takes effect, according to a press release.

"The pause has worked," Whitmer said. "The efforts we have made together to protect our families, frontline workers and hospitals have dramatically reduced cases and we have saved lives. Now, we are confident that starting Feb. 1, restaurants can resume indoor dining with safety measures in place."

Indoor dining at restaurants and bars has been suspended since Nov. 18 as the state experienced a surge in COVID-19 cases...

How is this going to work? How will restaurant personnel know if a group of diners represent only two households? What if four co-workers want to go out for lunch together? Will you be asked to show ID to prove that you live with the people with whom you dine? I don't know how this will work, but I'm glad that we can go out for a meal occasionally in the not-too-distant future.
