GROSSE POINTE, Mich. – Grosse Pointe Public Schools is debating whether to make its mask mandate optional.

A resolution introduced Monday night by Board Trustee Lisa Papas effectively challenges the legality of Wayne County to have a mask mandate. Papas and several parents who spoke during public comment Monday, cited the state budget bill, which includes language by Republicans that some interpreted as a possible loss of funding for counties with emergency health orders that are not supported at local levels. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the budget into law a month ago...

MSU fires staff, suspends students who refused COVID-19 vaccine (detroitnews.com)

Michigan State University has fired at least two employees and suspended 16 students for refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

MSU was among the first universities to announce in late July that it would require all students and staff to be vaccinated by Aug. 30 for the fall semester. MSU was among seven of the 15 public universities to require the vaccine, along with Wayne State and Grand Valley State universities, as well as the three campuses of the University of Michigan.

Other students are still making their way through the disciplinary process, MSU spokesman Dan Olsen said Tuesday...

ANN ARBOR – University of Michigan officials reported on Tuesday that there has been a “significant rise” in COVID cases among the student community over the past week.

“Social gatherings without masks continue to be the primary identified route of transmission among students,” reads a U-M statement.

In their last update on Nov. 5, school officials said they had identified two clusters involving 40 students. All of the cases were related to a social gathering over Halloween weekend and fall break travel...

So…my company came out yesterday with a email that they will enforce the vaccine mandate. It’s a major employer in the SE of MI. Over 10,000 employees.

Although I am “vaccinated”, I am against this mandate. Disappointed in my company. But I don’t think they had a lot of choices.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Michigan hit a seven-month high Monday with more than 3,000 people ailing from the virus and a surge of cases having added 21,034 cases and 95 deaths from the virus over the last three days.

In the last seven days, only one state reported more cases than Michigan based on the latest state data. Michigan ranks eighth for the highest positive case rate by population nationally.

The state also reached its goal of getting 70% of residents age 16 and older with at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, two months later than initially expected.

Michigan's hospitalizations have increased nearly 20% for two straight weeks. Should it continue on the trajectory, Michigan could have 4,000 patients hospitalized within the next two weeks, data shows...

State leads nation in daily new COVID-19 cases, spread

DETROIT – Michigan is once again leading the nation with the highest number of daily new COVID-19 cases, and experts don’t see an end in sight anytime soon.

Coronavirus infections have been on the rise throughout the state since July. Not all health experts agree that Michigan is seeing its fourth COVID “surge” right now, but the latest numbers certainly rival those seen during the surges earlier this spring and last fall.

There is a noticeable difference this time around, however: The number of infections have risen consistently over the last four months, a sustained growth, as opposed to spiking and then dropping over a shorter span of time. With that said, health experts say the numbers are only going to increase from here as people move inside during the cold winter months, and as people gather for the holidays...

Michigan again leads the country in new COVID-19 cases per population over the last seven days, according to tracking data Tuesday from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The state has reported a seven-day new case rate of 504 per 100,000 residents, the highest number nationally, the CDC found. Minnesota followed in second at 490. The figures are another setback in the state's 20-month fight against the virus and came amid spikes in new infections that are testing the capacity of Michigan's hospitals.

Michigan last led the nation in new cases per population in the spring during a surge that peaked in April. It remains unclear how long the latest surge will last and how it will affect health care workers who've been dealing with the pandemic since March 2020...

Our family is back to our traditional Thanksgiving dinner. There will be 22 of is at my sisters house.
None of us will be wearing masks, indoors or otherwise. It just does not seem to me (MOO) that wearing masks at our family dinner will be practical with all of the eating and drinking we do all day. I understand the MDHHS has to do something but telling people to wear a mask at Thanksgiving dinner seems a bit unrealistic. Again, MOO.
That said, we are not Covid minimizers. Every adult in our family has been vaccinated, most have had their boosters. Even the ones that technically did not fall in the booster category went early and got them like myself. As a family we made a plan and wanted to be as protected as possible. The kids are all vaccinated as well, with at least one shot for the ones under 12. There are only 2 kids not yet eligible.
Michigan is in a bad spot right now and it seems Covid is going to be here for the holidays.

DETROIT – Michigan reported 17,980 new cases of COVID-19 and 128 virus-related deaths Friday -- an average of 8,990 cases over the past two days, nearly the highest daily case total we’ve recorded since the start of the pandemic.

Friday’s update brings the total number of confirmed COVID cases in Michigan to 1,242,253, including 23,232 deaths. These numbers are up from 1,224,273 cases and 23,104 deaths, as of Wednesday...

Our family is back to our traditional Thanksgiving dinner. There will be 22 of is at my sisters house. None of us will be wearing masks, indoors or otherwise. DH and I are hosting a small family gathering for the first time in almost two years. We don't expect anyone to wear a mask nor would we ask anyone to do so. It's just not practical when most of us haven't even seen each other for many months. DH and I had our boosters on Tuesday and feel that we will be at a high level of Covid protection next week. Everyone should exercise good judgment in determining what is in their best interest for holiday celebrations this year.
