State health officials are warning consumers not to eat produce from a southern Michigan farm after it allegedly was using untreated human waste.

During a routine produce safety inspection, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development found Kuntry Gardens of Homer, about an hour and a half west of Detroit, "was using raw, untreated human waste on the fields where produce was grown for sale to local grocery stores and direct sale," officials said in a statement Monday.

The use violates the Michigan Food Law, PA 92 of 2000, as well as other state and federal laws and regulations, according to the release...

That is criminally revolting & utterly disgusting. I hope this discovery was made soon enough to prevent customer illness or worse!

What is being described here is "night soil"::eek:
My dad was posted to Japan when he served in the Army in the mid-50s. Personnel were issued a brochure outlining Japanese culture of the time. I no longer have it, but it included warnings not to buy local vegetables and fruits because they could be assumed to have been fertilized with night soil. It also went into detail about things like heroin and its dangers, organized crime (though the Yakuza weren't mentioned by name), geishas, and nightspots where servicemen were not wanted.
And now of course we can also potentially get COVID from such foodstuffs....

ETA: minor wording

Maybe he also has a Porta-Potty business? Anyway, if people want to do that for their own fruits and vegetables, it's their business, but not on commercially-grown items.

I understand that it's off-putting, but from a scientific standpoint, is there any reason why using human waste as fertilizer would be any more hazardous than using horse manure?

Carnivore manure, regardless of the species, should not be used as a fertilizer for food crops due to the risk of parasites.
