So he ate the sandwich 9.5 hours after he was arrested. Plenty of time to sober up. He would have recognized peanut butter at the first bite (or earlier) but he ate several bites. The jail is not at fault, how could they have known?? It was his responsibility to recognize that he couldn't eat what was given to him, especially since this had happened to him before.

Hmm. And he'd done it before, when he was jailed previously in another situation.

I'm going to take a wild guess here. Whoever said "I wonder if he ate the sandwich thinking he'd get out of jail by being taken to the hospital" was correct.

I think the guy's previous reactions were swelling and hives, enough to scare anyone (jail officials) into seeking medical attention for him, but NOT serious enough to terrify the inmate. Peanut allergies are notorious for sudden escalation of symptoms, and this time he pulled a full blown anaphylactic reaction. His bad.
