In a striking defeat for President Bush, White House counsel Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to the Supreme Court on Thursday after three weeks of brutal criticism from fellow conservatives. The Senate's top Republican predicted a replacement candidate within days.

Some suspect that she was just a pretend candidate - so obviously unqualified (she's never been a judge!) that she was just used to soften people up so the real candidate will look good.

I feel a bit sorry for her. How would you like to be "the Supreme Court nominee who never made it to the hearings." Kind of hard to hold your head up after that, and it wasn't her doing.
