I was a close friend of Mike Young, and saw him the morning he disappeared. He live only a block away, and often came by to see me. I have a little Maltese dog who loved him, and he would often come over to 'babysit' her. He had done so that morning. I knew Mike quite well. He was not a stupidan, and was definitely what I would call "street smart", but there was also a trusting side to him. I believe his phone battery had run down, which is why is used the phone at the convenience store. I have never Known Mike to stay up all night. He generally got very tired and was in bed by nine or ten. He had a bad back, and he did have a prescription for Hydrocodone from his physician. It is possible he took those to stay awake gambling. I suspect when he went to his car at 6:15, he was exhausted and probably laid down and slept in the car. When he woke in the afternoon, he headed home, stopping to call his sister. Mike lived with a friend of mine, and I believe he asked his sister to call his girlfriend, knowing she would be worried, but also undoubtedly angry that he had not come home all night, which is why he did not call her himself. It is not out of the realm of possibility that he did buy, or try to buy, some pills from somebody there, hence his car behind the store.
I suspect somebody overheard him on the telephone telling his sister about his winnings. I further believe he was followed when he left the car wash, and whoever followed him intended to rob him of the $4500. They may well have bumped his car from the rear, causing him to stop and get out, leaving the keys in the ignition. I doubt Mike would have willing turned over the money. He must have been abducted, taken to a rural location and was killed.
I heard two days ago that human remains have been found in Pawnee County, near Cleveland, which is his last known location. I am terribly sad to hear this, but it would almost be a relief if the remains turn out to be Mike. At least, at long last, he would have a proper burial, and those of us who adored him would have a modicum of closure. He was a gentle, quiet, good person, and my heart aches for his sister. They were very, very close.
