Miners Trapped In WV Coal Mine

I just saw a clip of the entrance of the mine. It does seem to have some type of concrete framing around the entrance. Otherwise it's all muddy.

Also from my understanding, there was no cave in anywhere along the mine shaft. Makes me wonder why the miners didn't make their way back up the shaft. Easy to Monday morning quarterback......so many what if's.....
Carbon monoxide? It can't all be clear, or the rescuers would have walked down the shaft.

They ARE walking down the shaft. It's 80 feet wide in some sections.

They turned back earlier, because the carbon monoxide concentrations were life-threatening for the rescue team.

That was yesterday. They are within 2000 feet of the end of the mine shaft right now....so there should be news sometime over night......

On Paula Zahn she said they are saying the rescuers could read where they are hoping the miners are within the hour. Is anyone else feeling extreme anxiety???? I am having a hard time with this one :( I will wait up tonight in hopes there is a miracle!

I am right here with you Sassygerl. I am glued to the TV.....taking in every single word being said. They are getting close to the end of the shaft.....12,000 feet is the end....and they are at 11,200. Just a matter of time....

The families have been called to the church for a meeting. I hope it's just another update for them and not grim news. I'm not ready to hear that yet.

You would think if the rescuers are able to walk to the end of the shaft that the trapped miners would be able to walk to the front of it...I feel so bad for these guys and their families. It has to be pure torture for them. I hope to God they are ok but even what little I am able to get off the news here the reporters and mayor saying things like 'now we just need a miracle' makes me wonder if they pretty much already know they are gone.. I hope not but I'm one to read between the lines and over analyze every little thing..This is just pure awful.

On a positive note, a lot of those men have been mining for 20-30 years and I'm sure have gone over and over the drills of what to do in an emergency. I am praying they found a safe little nitch to wait it out.......with the gas it doesn't sound like a possibility, but weirder and even more miraculous things have happened before. I am praying!

I don't know what constitutes a newbie in the mining industry but reports indicate that the 13 had between 3-30 years of mining experience.

I am so anxious and hopeful. I've had a knot in my stomach that won't go away.

Yes, there are a few young ones.....27 or so. Thankfully, I would think the older miners would take them under their wing.

News Conf in about 30 minutes.
