Miners Trapped In WV Coal Mine

  • #261
It says on msn.com that some overheard cell phone conversations saying that the "rescuers had found them and were checking their vital signs." That was misinterpreted as they were alive. The governor heard "whooping" and even he announced it. He later said he had had reservations. Then Hatfield the union leader came and announced it had all been a mistake. The families say there were no apologies, etc. for the mix-up. Riots broke out. Everyone blaming everyone else.

They wanted it so "bad" everybody jumped to conclusions. That can happen - the newspapers probably had it printed either way and ran with it.

Oh, let's go back to old-fashioned ways, please, no cell phones and jump the gun media and politicos. Such a terribly handled situation.

I am so heartbroken. I logged on tonight hoping to hear good news and have just got to the end of this thread. Prayers to the families and friends of the miners who have been through an unbelievable rollercoaster of emotions.

This is just way too sad.

Unfortunately, it was a "miscommunication". What a terrible double-whammy for the families.

I Know Its Horrible!!!

This whole thing has truly been a nightmare - I think of the poor children who were probably told that their "daddy" was going to be okay.....

I believe the lives of a coal miner and his family are something that most of us cannot truly comprehend.....

I found a good Website that some of you may want to check out that goes into detail about coal mining......

May all of us who drive to work in our little business suits and only have to worry about traffic snarls say a little prayer of gratitude today.

What happened to reporters confirming a story before it goes out? I think the media jumped the gun on this one and made a bad situation worse.

I don't think a story really "went out." I think it was just one person who overhead something that sounded positive and they ran with it - I can see this very easily happening...... Everyone wants to be the bearer of good news!

It's dark as a dungeon and damp
as the dew,
Where the danger is double and
pleasures are few,
Where the rain never falls and
the sun never shines,
It's dark as a dungeon way down
in the mine.

Coal is becoming a "hot commodity", one of the energy sources we have alot of in this country. You would think we could make the conditions and pay a little better for the people who go down and mine this commodity - I would imagine most of the money goes, well, to the "big guys" - energy companies, stock holders, etc.? I wonder if they even get benefits or health insurance?

do we now have a double tragedy? the deaths of all but one and the false hopes that were raised by the miscommunication. i picked up the paper this morning and saw a headline that 12 were alive! i came directly here to rejoice with fellow posters from yesterday, i felt bad for the one family and that the other 12 had a miracle. now i see it is really the other way around.

prayers going out to the survivor in critical condition and of course those who have lost a loved one.

Well, the person who is critical might not recover properly. If you don't get proper air to your brain for a period of time there is damage.

I'm not sure if you can recover from serious carbon monoxide poisoning, does anyone know?

  • #274
CO2 poisoning can be reversed - IF caught in time, but can do damage to organs that require a lot of oxygen - i.e., heart and brain.

We will just have to wait and see at this point......

Is that why so many newspapers like mine say 12 men found alive? The story was based on rumor and not confirmed. The media should not have went by what another person said they overheard.

This is so tragic. The media was not ringing the church bells......what were they to report with church bells ringing and a celebration going on? I was watching last night and Anderson Cooper even mentioned when he heard the yells and church bells he wasn't sure what to do since he wasn't sure what was going on...then a man came running to the camera saying they were all alive. In any case, it's all very sad :( I don't understand why they didn't correct the misinformation for 3 hours!

This is so heartbreaking. I'm watching FoxNews and they are showing the celebration from last night. How incredibly sad.
