Miners Trapped In WV Coal Mine

This has got to be the most irresponsible news events ever. I can honestly state I don't blame the families of these miners.......I'd be ready to sue & probably do worse to the Company for lieing to me. That is sick.........

If they knew within 20 minutes they should of told the families in 22 minutes it was a mistake.

Edited for bad spelling

I wouldn't believe anything the Drs or hospital told me if I was the family. Looks to me like the Co is trying to cover there own butts........I'd be insisting on hiring my own Drs etc etc he'd be outta that neck of the woods........jmo

First of all, my prayers are with all the families in this heartbreaking time. I was stunned when I heard that the 12 had, in fact, NOT survived, that there was only one survivor. I can't blame the media who was reporting on the jubilation and joy of the people after hearing their loved ones were alive. It was what they were seeing and hearing. But... I want to know who first told people that 12 were found alive. I want to know just HOW that happened, and if it was someone in an official capacity or not.

But for now, I pray for that boy in the hospital, and all the bereaved families.

They couldn't tell the families at that time if it was 11 dead, 3 dead, or 2 dead. They were waiting for real confirmed numbers. I heard last night the command center attempted to pass the information on via police channels. It seems that the information that 12 alive was not confirmed never reached the church.

I sure don't think the families were lied to.....and the company CEO clearly stated in the press conference during the night that they informed people via police channels to please correct the information, but he did not know why that information did not get relayed.

Hind sight is 20/20........of course they should have gone immediately and informed them of the correct information. But putting the blame squarely on their shoulders is not the proper thing to do in my opinion. As he stated, he was trying to get the most accurate information to pass along.

Really? Where do you see that happening?

I think that was the information given by the first hospital. I got the impression they really weren't equipped to do all the tests necessary. A doctor CNN interviewed said test for co2 can be difficult and elusive.

I just heard on Fox that co2 was detected

There's so much going on....I'm now confused...carbon dioxide????

I did hear no carbon monoxide has been detected. I am praying this is true, although it would seem impossible with the levels being so high. I pray we get to hear the lone survivors story.

Miner's Prayer

I keep listening for the whistle in the morning
But the mines are still; no noise is in the air.
And our children wake up hungry in the morning
For the cupboards are so empty and so bear.

And their little feet, they are so cold, they stumble
And we have to pin their rags upon their backs.
And our homes are broken down and very humble,
And the winter wind comes pourin' through the cracks.

CHORUS:
Oh, it's hard to hear the hungry children crying
When I have to hands that want to do their share.
Oh, you rich men in the city, won't you have a little pity
And just listen to miner's prayer?

Just beneath the frozen ground the coal is laying,
Only waiting `till we seek it from its bed.
And above the ground, each miner stands there praying
While each miner's wife bows down her weary head.

Oh, we only ask enough to clothe and feed them
And to hear the hungry children laugh and play.
Oh, if we could give these things to those who need them,
I know that would be a miner's happy day.

Another miner's song/prayer:

Artist/Band: Yoakam, Dwight
Lyrics for Song: Miner's Prayer
Lyrics for Album: Guitars Cadillacs Etc
Miner's Prayer is dedicated to the memory of Luther Tibbs.
A Kentucky coal miner for 40 years, and my Grandpa.

When the whistle blows each morning
And I walk down in that cold, dark mine
I say a prayer to my dear Savior
Please let me see the sunshine one more time

Chorus:
When oh when will it be over
When will I lay these burdens down
And when I die, dear Lord in heaven
Please take my soul from 'neath that cold dark ground

I still grieve for my poor brother
And I still hear my dear old mother cry
When late that night they came and told her
He'd lost his life down in the Big Shoal Mine

Chorus:
When oh when will it be over
When will I lay these burdens down
And when I die, dear Lord in heaven
Please take my soul from 'neath that cold dark ground

I have no shame, I feel no sorrow
If on this earth not much I own
I have the love of my sweet children
An old plow mule, a shovel and a hoe

Chorus:
When oh when will it be over
When will I lay these burdens down
And when I die, dear Lord in heaven
Please take my soul from 'neath that cold dark ground

Yeah, when I die, dear Lord in heaven
Please take my soul from 'neath that cold dark ground

The mining CEO/execs. needed to walk their cowardly asses down to that church to TELL the families themselves that the media/command center reports had been made in error, and that the miners had died....

I had a job for many years part of which involved sometimes delivering bad news to employees....I did it straight up, without fear, but with a heart...people will respect you for that....these are a bunch of cowards..., JMO...

I just heard on Fox that co2 was detected

The press conference I heard between 8 and 8:15 am EST today on Fox Radio was with Dr. Lawrence Roberts at West Virginia University's Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. That is where McCloy was transferred to during the night from St. Joe's hospital locally around the mine. Dr. Roberts confirmed that no carbon monoxide was detected.

And just to clarify some earlier posts.....the symbol for carbon monoxide is CO. CO2 is carbon dioxide, which is not involved here.

This is truly a sad story. Lot of hearts and hopes broken in the wee hours of the morning. I don't think anyone deserves to have a finger pointed at them. I was wide awake this morning when the news was changed to only one survivor and it seems it was an honest, but horrible, mistake.

I don't see any reason to question the doctors in this. Dr. Susan Long at St. Joe's repeated over and over in her press conference about 3 am that she operated in a very small hospital, their goal was to stabilize this man and get him to Ruby Mem. in Morgantown as quickly as possible. At no point did she lead people to believe that she could give a complete diagnosis on his condition. She was honest too that she wasn't sure about the carbon monoxide. He is doing much better according to a radio news report I just heard.

I'm in WV, about 2 hours away from this tragedy, the daughter and sister of coal miners. It is a dangerous job and to point the finger at the coal operator at this point means that someone expected him to play God. Wouldn't that have been nice if he could??

....first of all, by not attending to their mines - they'd been cited for safety violations before, and second, wire services reported this morning that the company knew that most of the miners had died...They couldn't have gone into the church where most of the families were gathered to tell them this?

No offense intended but the current company that owns this mine just bought it in November 2005. From media reports I realize the violations against this mine is horrendous and I feel it should have been shut down until corrective actions were made, I also feel that we can't place blame against the current owners for the violations that occured prior to them buying the mine.

But I do agree that the CEO and other company officials should have went to the family members and corrected the "misinformation" as soon as they learned that the information was incorrect.

i was listening to satelite radio in the car and i heard the preacher talking about what happened when someone ran in the church and said that they were all alive, did anyone else hear that??

Yes Michelle. That's what they've been saying. Someone overheard misinformation and told the victims families that were in the church.
