McCloy is believed to have suffered brain damage from lack of oxygen, but the extent of the damage is not yet known.

Because of the amount of time he spent in the mine before being rescued, "we are in many ways in uncharted territory with predicting his recovery," said Bailes, a neurosurgeon. "Many people with severe carbon monoxide poisoning end up with severe cognitive, personality, memory, visual and motor responses. We just don't know."

McCloy has been unconscious since he was pulled from the mine more than 41 hours after the Jan. 2 explosion that led to the deaths of 12 other miners. Officials have said one miner was apparently killed by the blast itself, and the others were asphyxiated.

McCloy was moved out of intensive care Tuesday but remains on dialysis because of kidney damage.

hopefully it's not severe brain damage, but more on the lines of something that can at least be dealt with, over time, with therapy...

We can only hope that the miracle will continue, and that Randy will continue to improve as time goes on.

Insurer to cover McCloy's medical bills ...

Surviving Sago miner Randal McCloy's family will have all of his medical and rehabilitation bills related to the disaster paid by the state's workers' compensation insurer.

"No co-payments, no deductibles," said Andy Wessels, spokesman for BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Co. "We're paying 100 percent -- all of the necessary medical treatment related to his injury, whether inpatient or outpatient, as well as any rehabilitation he may need."

McCloy's condition was upgraded Monday from serious to fair. According to Dr. Larry Roberts, McCloy shows neurological improvement every day and regained some kidney function over the weekend. He reacts to visitors and doctors who speak with him, but still cannot speak himself.

I'm so happy he's coming back and just hope he knows how many people are keeping him in their healing thoughts.

After being treated with respirators, feeding tubes, dialysis and even a couple of hours in a hyperbaric chamber, the sole survivor of the Sago Mine explosion has left the care of doctors who have skippered his recovery efforts over the past three weeks.

Randy McCloy, 26, is being transferred to a rehabilitation center that specializes in treating people disabled by accident, injury, illness or congenital problems, hospital officials said.

This is such great news! Hopefully the great news will continue and he will speak soon! That would be awesome!

Right tackle Max Starks is giving four of his Super Bowl tickets to a family involved in the mining tragedy in Sago, W.Va. Starks said Thursday he wanted to keep the matter private and was reluctant to speak about it, but he did admit it was a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to help out the family, which he did not identify. After receiving a letter requesting autographed gear, Starks consulted his mother, Elleanor, and decided to send the family four of his tickets. Each Steelers player is allotted 15 tickets for the big game. Starks will give the rest of his allotment to family and friends.

What a considerate thing to do! Classic of the Steelers. They know their fans are mostly blue collar workers and their emblem stands for coal (yellow), ore (red) and scrap metal (blue), just in case ya didn't know that bit o' trivia! Very touching, imo, to take this family's mind off things for a while. Way to go Steelers! :woohoo:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Joe Manchin called for all coal companies in West Virginia to halt production and perform safety checks after two more mine workers were killed Wednesday in separate accidents.
A miner was killed at an underground mine when a wall support popped loose, said Caryn Gresham, a spokeswoman for the state Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training.

The second fatality occurred at a surface mine when a bulldozer struck a gas line, sparking a fire and killing the operator, said Dirk Fillpott, a spokesman for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The deaths brought to 16 the number of mining-related fatalities in West Virginia since Jan. 2.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Thousands of West Virginia miners got safety lectures at the start of their shifts and officials began a round of inspections across the No. 2 coal-producing state Thursday in a "time-out" urged by the governor.

Sixteen West Virginia miners have been killed over the past month in what is already the deadliest year in the state's coalfields in more than a decade
