Minnesota Infant Infected with Polio Virus

You know what: I am a responsible parent who will do whatever, pay whatever to whomever to protect my child from any preventable disease. Immunization prevents diseases........not vice versa..........

I don't care what other people think: I know what life was like before vacination, children died and suffered life long complication from diseases.

These diseases do exist in other parts of the world. Do you not think that people travel and then expose people in the USA and Canada to diseases especially if that child has no immunity to the disease.....please........

Like I said before: A large group of people from a religious organization did not "believe" in vacination. They had their own school that their children attended, as these children cannot enter a public school system without the required immunization, nor daycare. Well to make a long story short, most( a very high percentage) of these children, adults, pregnant women were infected with German Measels from ONE person who came over from another country. Even adults who never set foot in this school , but who were part of this religous organization caught this disease from their children......

This one person and this religious organization put the whole general public at risk. I took my children to the Doctors to get them another shot against German measels.....just in case. I choose to protect them because this disease is now in the general public because of ONE person.

I erred on the side of caution and protection of my kids health....even though I live at least 300 miles from this city where this happened.

Other parents choose to do the same......protect our kids..........

That is what vacination do, protect your children from diseases........plain and simple........

For example:

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is a bacterium that can infect the outer lining of the brain causing meningitis. Hib is transmitted from person to person through mucus droplets that are spread by coughing or sneezing. Invasive Hib disease occurs most often at three months to three years of age, peaking at six to seven months of age. The disease is uncommon after age five years.
Hib can cause a wide variety of serious infections, including pneumonia, severe throat swelling that makes breathing difficult (epiglottitis), and infections of blood, bones, joints, and the covering of the heart. Complications of Hib meningitis include blindness, deafness, mental retardation, learning disabilities, and death. About 5% of children (500 out of every 10,000) with Hib meningitis die despite antibiotic treatment

The first Hib vaccine was licensed in 1985. Scientists later reformulated the vaccine so that it would be effective in children under 18 months of age, and the FDA licensed this improved version in 1987. The currently used Hib vaccine protects infants as young as six weeks old.

Prior to universal Hib immunization, Hib was the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in infants and preschool-age children, and caused approximately 20,000 cases of invasive disease annually.

Even if my child was not in daycare - I would still do everything possible in the off chance that he/she may come into contact with a child(say at a park, playgroup, shopping mall, friends place) to contract this illness......

I know for sure my child is protected when they are immunized, why would I play "russian roulette" with their health when a simple vacination will ensure they are protected......and then further protected with "boosters" as required.

Before the polio vaccine, 13,000 to 20,000 people were paralyzed by polio, and about 1,000 people died from it each year in the United States. Most of those infected were elementary school children so it was often called 'infantile paralysis.'

The incidence of paralytic polio peaked in the U.S. in 1952 with 21,000 reported cases and numerous deaths. Following licensure of the Salk (inactivated) polio vaccine in 1955, the incidence of the disease fell dramatically. The disease was further reduced by the advent of the Sabin (oral) polio vaccine in 1961. The last cases of paralytic polio from natural poliovirus in the U.S. were in 1979, and the most recent case from outside the U.S. occurred in 1993.

In my province(state) children cannot enter daycare or school until PROOF is supplied that they have had all of the required immunzation. After all, the daycare and school do not want to put ALL children at risk because of ONE child........if this information is not provided the child cannot enter daycare or school. Also the child will be suspended from daycare or school if a "spot" check reveals that the child does not have up to date immunization.

I rather make the drug companies money, then to "risk" my child getting very sick.........that is my choice.........as a responsible parent........who cares about my children's health.........who has the means and opportunity to prevent my child from getting any preventable disease.......

Can you imagine what life was life without immunization............all of the diseases that have been prevented by immunization would be common....in every child in every school........in every state, in every country.......

Isn't modern medicine great......prevents illness and death..........especially in the most vulnerable persons in society.....and the most valuable....our children.......

You see I don't have a medical degree nor did I go to medical school, so when my child's doctor tell me that if I choose not to immunize my child I am being "negligent" in my child's health and "long term best interest" because of what I "believe" or what "others" have told me. That is "irresponsible" as the parent "thinks" they know more than the:

Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

American Academy of Pediatrics

American Academy of Family Physicians

I also ensure that every member of my family gets the "flu" shot every year also. My friend choose not immunize herself and her kids and one child got the flu and then everyone got the flu,(extended family members came over for two weeks to care for the family) it was a " big time mess"......one of her kids ended up in the hospital........this year she will be first in line "so she can protect" her family when the flu season hits. Prevention is the best medicine......

Anyone who does not "believe" in vacination because they "think" that the big drug business in trying to "gouge" them, should take a look at their children and then their wallet and decide what is more important.......money or their kids health.......I would say......let me think about this for half a nanosecond....my kids health........to vacinate them against peventable diseases..........

Cyberlaw, I understand your position, however I don't think you understand mine. Do you think I don't know the dangers of these illnesses? It is very difficult to take a stand, without the blessing of our "government officials", to put oneself on the edge of being seen as "neglectful" in the eyes of so many. MORE THAN 1% of this NATION'S BOYS ARE BRAIN DAMAGED BY THESE SHOTS. The stats 1 in 166 do not show that few of these are girls. I know the illnesses could come and take one of the kids in my family, however the shots have already taken four .

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/ed...icles/2005/07/01/autism_mercury_and_politics/

In a 1991 memo, Dr. Maurice Hilleman, one of the fathers of Merck's vaccination programs, warned his bosses that 6-month-old children administered the shots on schedule would suffer mercury exposures 87 times the government safety standards. He recommended that Thimerosal be discontinued and complained that the US Food and Drug Administration, which has a notoriously close relationship with the pharmaceutical industry, could not be counted on to take appropriate action as its European counterparts had. Merck ignored Hilleman's warning, and for eight years government officials added seven more shots for children containing Thimerosal

Thank you CyberLaw! {{HUG}}
He did have a time with it, but the anti-viral medicine did work miracles and between it, lots of popsicles, calamine lotion and oatmeal baths, he did really well and I don't think he has more than one or two scars. My DD was a true angel those first couple of days. She would do pox counts so she could tell me when I called. LOL!
It was quite an improvement over when she had them and all they could do was Benedryl, oatmeal baths and calamine lotion. She never scratched them but it was so difficult for her. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep and sitting in the bath hurt because of the ones on her bottom.areas. I finally came up with the working idea of putting a few soft blankets and sheets in the bottom of the tub to pad it somewhat.

I thank God every day that they have vaccines now for so many things. Can there be complications? Well, yes, just like there can be with antibiotics. But I remember being young and the bad things that happened with some children with polio, measles and mumps.

I haven't heard of Cold FX but going to go look for it at the store. Can it be bought at a drugstore or is it a speciality item? What two "natural pills" do you give everyone? My son would take anything if it would even "maybe" help him not get a cold. He always says he'd rather get strep than any kind of upper respiratory infection. LOL! {Me too!}

Also, you are right about the whooping cough vaccine. It's still given here too, thank goodness. It's given with tetnus and ?? (I forget).

My oldest son had CP, nasty case, miserable child.........my friend brought over her twins, during her holidays just so they could catch CP at the same time and get it over with.

They still require the Whopping Cough vacine. At least in my province in Canada. I saw a video of a child with Whopping Cough, it was HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE........BEYOND WORDS.....

I think it is a good idea to get any required vacine for your child. Speak to your child's doctor. After all vacine's do pevent serious illness........

My son also got a second case of very mild chicken pox. MUCH to my surprise, but apparently it runs in my husbands family. It was very mild, I spoke to his Ped and she said that it does happen.

For some reason both cases of Chicken Pox happened in April.

I really feel for KrazyKollector child's who had three illness at once. Man, could not even imagine, it must have been very hard for all members of the family. Kudos to Mom and the very responsible 16 year old daughter..........

Has anyone heard of something called Cold FX....with cold and flu season coming up I have stockpiled it........it is a godsend when I hear "Mom, I think I am coming down with a cold, my throat is sore, my nose is stuffy and my chest is getting tight."

I still give all over 12 in my family, two "natural" pills a day to ensure at least less of a chance of getting a cold........

Tricia,
As I wrote above. I've had shingles twice. The first time was about 10-11 months after I hads stopped smoking. I figured out later that first it had gone down my underarm into the tricep area. I was in agony and thought I had become allergic to anti-perspirant. I couldn't even stand having my tshirts touch the area. Then it moved to across my chest. I went to the doctor, but at that time, my legs (ankle-foot area) were also swollen to twice their size and I was having back pain. The doctor told me he only wanted to hear about ONE thing wrong and then went off on a rant. I started crying, got up and left. I suffered another week with the shingles (didn't know what it was) and would have periods of time where I would just lie in bed and scream with the pain. Finally, DH got off of working midnights and decided to take me to the hospital. That's when I found out it was shingles and the back pain was also shingles. It was part of the nerve path from the spine. It felt like I was having a coat hook get pushed all the way through my back to my front. The hospital was also concerned about my legs. I was at the hospital for over 8 hours. It took 4 shots and then finally IV Demoral to relieve my pain enough to rest a bit. Right before my discharge, they gave me another IV push of Demoral and told DH and I that I would sleep for 10 hours at least with that much in me. I went home and did 4 loads of laundry instead. ooops!

My second case was when I was with my Mom in Florida. Definititely caused by stress. We had landed in Florida the week before to buy her a new trailer to spend the winters in (thanks to Hurricane Jean). We were in the car to go get the title switched, Mom forgot her purse and went to get it. She tripped over a patio stone and fell face first onto the concrete. Multiple nose fractures, teeth through the lip and two deep cuts along with many abrasions and concrete rash. Because she was on Plavix, she wouldn't stop bleeding.
We had been in Florida for 90 minutes at that time. It was horrible and I didn't handle myself well at all. Forgot all my training and just fell apart.
Sssssoooo, to make this long story finally shorter, the stress was bad and I got shingles in my legs. At least that's what the doc said, but I am not convinced. It hurt and burned really bad, but not as bad as the first time. Will never know for sure I guess.

Okay, remembering all of the above has gotten me all teary eyed and sad. Dang it! Anyone got a spare hankie?

May I change the subject just a bit? Thanks :)

I had chicken pox. When I was twenty I got shingles. Oh God it hurt. All up and down the right side of my body. My doctor said you can't get shingles unless you have had the chicken pox.

What was weird about my case is my doctor said shingles happened in the elderly 99 percent of the time and not to young people. Unless someone was under an extreme amount of stress they wouldn't get it at such a young age.

I wasn't under stress. I was actually having a blast. Very carefree time for me.

Has anyone else had shingles?

Robert Kennedy is not even a doctor, for goodnes sake.......he is a "layman" on a mission.......without any benefit of actually having an education to back up what he says........

Why don't people get the FACTS and not rely on MYTHS and go to the American Pediatric Website

1 out of 160, site a reliable source for this information, a reliable source, like a medical association or the like.

The largest study to examine the relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism was reported in theNew England Journal of Medicine in November 2002. About 537,000 children in Denmark who either did or did not receive the MMR vaccine were examined for about six years. The incidence of autism was the same in children who did or did not receive the MMR vaccine.

Studies on the causes of autism
One of the best ways to determine whether a particular disease or syndrome is genetic is to examine the incidence in identical and fraternal twins. Using a strict definition of autism, when one twin has autism, approximately 60 percent of identical and 0 percent of fraternal twins have autism. Using a broader definition of autism (that is, autistic spectrum disorder), approximately 92 percent of identical and 10 percent of fraternal twins have autism. Therefore, autism clearly has a genetic basis.

From the American Family Physician, A peer review journal of the American Family Physicians.

Consequences of Failure to Vaccinate
A recent study44 in Colorado demonstrated that children who were exempted from immunization were 22 times more likely to develop measles and almost six times more likely to acquire pertussis than vaccinated children. School was the site of infection in more than 20 percent of the children who developed measles or pertussis. In this study, each 1 percent increase in children exempted from immunization increased the risk of a pertussis outbreak by 12 percent.44 Because immunizations against measles and pertussis are not 100 percent effective, there was a 60 percent and a 90 percent annual increased risk of measles and pertussis among vaccinated children three to 18 years of age for each 1 percent increase in the proportion of unimmunized children (exemptors) by county.

Consequently, the choice of some parents not to immunize their children increases the risk for children who are immunized. These parents may not realize that the individual choice not to vaccinate a child has public health consequences.

You know, this is just a few minutes' worth of googling, first-page results... my GOD! How do people even wonder why some of us refuse to trust the government when it comes to vaccinating our children?

This really has nothing, or very little, to do with any alleged MMR/Autism links- this only concerns our government's history of shady dealings, and monetary ties with vaccine manufacturers- and the major "oops!" they have had, but failed to inform us of- going back DECADES. People- parents- are placing far too much faith in vaccines, and are misplacing the blame for outbreaks upon "non-vaccinated" children.

This really has to stop.

I shall continue to adhere to my own "tried and true" medically-documented and anecdotal evidence, and others are free to adhere to their "the government says- and so my doctor says- and I trust them..." evidence.

Guys, this is Websleuths.com where we are presently discussing this! I find it quite ironic that some of the same posters who have scads of counter-culture and even "psychic" theories concerning crimes seem to toe the line like good little puppets when it comes to the government, vaccines and -oh, god- "for the sake of the children!"

I do realize that my view on vaccines is not mainstream. Then again, I've never adopted a mainstream view just because everyone else did- or swallowed the gummint rhetoric, hook, line & sinker. (I know what a sinker is, eh?)

This is not the first time I've had a disagreement on an internet newsgroup or "message board" over vaccines. Since 1998, I've heard it all, seen it all. I've lived in upscale burbs, ethnic towns, big cities, depressed cities: They all had a different agenda where "mandatory vaccines" came into play. Want to guess where they were pushed the most? The HepB vaccine demographics should spell it out quite plainly. Despicable, lowest-common-denominator vaccination strategies. Nowhere was this agenda pushed more strongly than in the locales which housed numerous illegal and new immigrants, low-income families, and places with high crime rates.

So, I moved someplace more "rural" in New Hampshire where I can rest easier and provide a better, more healthy lifestyle for my family.

And I'll take my selectively/non-vaccinated, breast-fed, never-been-ill, whole-food eatin', physically active, non-day-care-goin', non-food/chemical-allergic, fresh-air-breathin', extremely strong and agile, healthy, energetic, I repeat- NEVER been ill! , never visited a doctor for any affliction! children... over the scads of:

*fully vaccinated, formula-fed, sickly, sniffling, McDonalds- eatin', runny-nosed, weird-rash-pickin', oozing scab-riddled, diarrhea-laden, can't climb a freakin' tree, worm-infested, daycare-bound, flabby, TV-watching, oh, and again- fully-vaccinated, Playstation-playin', once-a-month doc visits for that rattling cough, chemical-sensitivity-bound, multiple-food-allergic children. ANY day! Hands-freaking-down!

This is not something you, nor anyone, will ever change my philosophy about, especially not with the arguments I've seen to date. They just don't cut it! And I concede that my position and arguments will not cut it for those of you who think vaccines are manna. It's definitely a topic where minds diverge and we must agree to disagree. :)

CyberLaw said:

You know what? I am a responsible parent who will do whatever, pay whatever to ensure that my children are naturally healthy and whole, with the immune system they were born with- despite the nasty, chemical crap the government dictates they be injected with regardless of the inflated "risk." Clean living, good nutrition- healthy lifestyles which most of us in this nation have forgotten because of government nanny-isms- prevents disease as much as- if not more than- immunization programs.

I also trust my family doctor. And she is quite clear about not accepting kickbacks, perks, free lunches, or anything else offered by drug/vaccine companies. I trust her all the more because of this.

It is not just a matter of vaccines or no vaccines. It is a lifestyle. A culture. Some of it is genetics. Sone of it is diet. And some of it is vaccines. Put it all together, and the outcome of ignoring these- leaving it up to the government- well, it is a place I do not want to be. And so I did something about it. Not only refusing most vaccines, but honestly being a vigilant parent and seeing to my childrens' whole health. Body and soul.

Ah, and in case any of you extreme-religious, anti-abortion posters think vaccines are the bomb- how about researching those vaccines which are cultured on aborted fetal tissue? How do you feel about that?

Yes, this is a very personal issue. Like religion and politics- only more is at stake. While some people are quick to sacrifice the harm to some at the benefit of the majority- I will not.

Cabada may be the socialist place to be (nod to Cyberlaw), but the U.S.A. is still a constitutional republic! And if you don't like what I do with my life, then you can stick it! Or move to Canada. (Or California. :silenced: )

Hammerized, thank you, you put it wonderfully with both truth and your passion.
BTW, in our family we are no longer closet nursers, we women no longer hide the FACT that 3 and 4 yr olds, and some beyond 4, do nurse. The AAP suggests nursing until age one, while the WHO now suggest 2.

misty, what an awful experience you went through.. but i think the doctors were just looking out for what they thought was best for you and for your baby, sad as the whole thing may be. of course it must have been hard being pressured to do that, and thank god we do live in a society where we still have a choice...! and mothers who have children with birth defects or retardation usually love them just the same, and of course you would have too. but i think you are very lucky to have ben spared the whole ordeal, of a lifetime of a child with possible severe disabilities. i think the body knows best, and the doctors were only thinking of your well-being & the well-being of your child.
just imagine,, an even worse scenario would be a world were doctors/society forced you to have a child that you didn't want to, even when you knew the child was at risk for severe deformities/health problems...!

has anyone read about the theory that the mysterious rise in chronic fatigue syndrome & fibromyalgia could be caused by the polio vaccine laying dormant for decades, and then coming back to life in a new, "mutated" form, later in adulthood....??? i'm wondering if researchers have found any new evidence to support this.

then again, it could be that there isn't REALLY an increase, but in the old days they just didn't have a fancy name for their "aches & pains"...

Please make sure that unvacinated children does not travel from state to state as they "may become infected" and start a cross state epidemic. They should not travel to or come into contact with anyone from other countries also

They should be kept isolated, away from the general public, as they could be "ground zero" for starting diseases.......as they are not protected from same.

So when these selfish, irresponsible parents choose not to protect their own children from diseases(which is their choice) we the parents of other children should not have to "pay" for their selfish and irresponsible choices, as now their choice can affect my child's health.

So make sure you "warn" other parents if your child chooses to visit their homes as the parents should have "informed" consent as to allow a "risky" child into their home and have contact with their loved ones.

I guess after the fact, the one parent with the unvacinated child will say: I thought I was doing what was in the best interest of MY child, I am so sorry that your child died or became very ill.......please forgive me...... and I "hope" that my child who infected another which in turn infected 50 more will be O.K. also. I can't understand that my choice not to vacinated my child lead to the spread of a disease among 50 more.......

SARS started with just one person.......that all it takes. This person came to Canada from another country.......there was no vacination from this, and look how it spread worldwide especially in my City....it appeared that this one person was "ground zero".

From Parenting New Hampshire:

Before vaccines are released, they go through a rigorous process that proves them to be safe and effective," Before the development of the Hib vaccine, there were up to 25,000 cases of HIB meningitis and 400 to 500 deaths per year. "Now we're down to 50 cases a year."

What are the risks of not having your child vaccinated?
Dr. Salmon:
PTA There is always a risk of the unvaccinated child contracting the disease, depending on the type of disease, how easily transmissible it is, and its prevalence in the area. Parents should be aware that there is a definite risk of their child getting sick. Unvaccinated children are, for example, 22% to 35% more likely to contract measles than those kids who are vaccinated against it. Thus, a group of unvaccinated children with measles can put all other children they come into contact with at risk for contracting the disease. Although vaccines work extremely well, nothing is 100% effective. One child may have gotten all her immunizations, but perhaps she didn't get the full immune protection from every dose. Another might be too young to be vaccinated, or might have received her latest dose a bit late. On a community level, schools with higher numbers of exempt children have higher rates of disease. We've seen it in some religious communities. An example is an island off the coast of Seattle, Washington, where many children are unvaccinated; there, outbreaks of pertussis occur.

www.sciencenews.com

In addition, vaccinated children living in areas with high percentages of unvaccinated children were significantly more likely to get one of these infectious diseases than were children in more highly vaccinated areas, says Robert T. Chen of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, an author of the study. For each 1 percent of kids that go unvaccinated in a county, the researchers calculated that the risk of measles among vaccinated children rose by 60 percent and the risk of pertussis rose by 90 percent.

Chen has reservations about ending any vaccination programs against deadly diseases. "In this world of potential bioterrorism, any disease worth eliminating is also a perfect target for bioterrorists," he says.
"That means we no longer have the luxury of ignoring even very rare adverse events," Chen concludes. "We are never going to be able to stop immunizing again."

www.hsph.harvard.edu

Add in the abundance of misinformation floating around the Internet and health professionals worry that parents' fears about extremely rare vaccine side effects will start to overshadow the unprecedented health benefits gained during the immunization era. "The evidence is not very strong for some of these associations, at best," notes McCormick, chair of the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. "So they would be trading off a hypothetical risk against a very real risk of a bad disease.

www.altcorp.com

Reports of side effects that she gathered from the Internet contributed to the decision by Suzanne Walther of Murfreesboro, Tenn., to postpone giving any vaccines to her third child, Mary Catherine. Unfortunately, her daughter developed a vaccine-preventable case of meningitis just before her first birthday. Mary Catherine recovered fully, but children with such an infection can become mentally retarded or die.

"These diseases weren't tangible to me [before Mary Catherine's illness], but I saw all these horror stories about adverse reactions parents attributed to vaccines," Walther says. "I only wanted to vaccinate if it was the best thing for my child."

Before the original pertussis vaccine was introduced in 1949, the incidence of whooping cough was 150 cases per 100,000 Americans. The vaccine dropped it to 1.5 cases per 100,000, but it has been creeping back up since 1983, as more parents shun the vaccine for their children.

But Santa Cruz County public health chief McCarty said society is now paying a price for the talk-show chat about the alleged dangers of childhood vaccines. The risk of death from pertussis is 1 in every 200 cases. Even in a vaccinated population, the risk of whooping cough is estimated to be 10 in 100,000. ``The problem is that we have had such success with childhood vaccination that people have forgotten what these diseases are like,'' said McCarty. ``People who think they are doing the right thing are not getting their children vaccinated. They couldn't be more mistaken. This is as important as putting your kid in the car seat, seeing they have enough to eat and locking up the poisons.''

The American Academy of Pediatrics today told the U.S. House Committee on Government Reform that if parents choose not to vaccinate their children because they have heard unfounded, unscientific misinformation about vaccine safety, the nation will experience outbreaks of dangerous diseases.
"Complacency about the threat of diseases such as measles and meningitis can be a death trap for a child," said AAP President Joel J. Alpert, M.D. "Most infectious diseases can still be a touch or a sneeze away and unvaccinated children will pay the price with their health or even their lives

Vaccination is the only way a parent can protect their child from contracting a disease from an unvaccinated, infected person, including a child who goes to the same day care or plays on the same playground.

"Since there is no way to know who is or isn't vaccinated, don't risk your child contracting a disease. Vaccinate your child," Dr. Alpert said. "The chances of a child having an adverse reaction to a vaccine is minuscule compared to the risk of disease your child faces if you don't vaccinate."

When it comes to public health problems like infectious diseases, the choice of an individual impacts the health of others in a community. Immunizations have a clear community benefit in addition to its benefit to the individual patients.

"There is no question that childhood immunization is the safest way to prevent disease, disability and death," said Dr. Alpert. "All children should be immunized as a matter of public health."

Polio virus causes acute paralysis that can lead to permanent physical disability and even death. Before polio vaccine was available, 13,000 to 20,000 cases of paralytic polio were reported each year in the United States. These annual epidemics of polio often left thousands of victims--mostly children--in braces, crutches, wheelchairs, and iron lungs. The effects were life-long.
Development of polio vaccines and implementation of polio immunization programs have eliminated paralytic polio caused by wild polio viruses in the U.S. and the entire Western hemisphere.

In 1999, as a result of global immunization efforts to eradicate the disease, there were about 2,883 documented cases of polio in the world. In 1994, wild polio virus was imported to Canada from India, but high vaccination levels prevented it from spreading in the population.

Thank Goodness, that Canada was well vacinated against polio, any disease can be imported from another country, but again, responsible parents choose to vacinated their children, so as not to spread or have the potential to spead a disease into the general population..........and to protect their children from "imported" diseases from countries that may not have an immunization pogram in place.

Getting my children vacinated was a "no brainer" decision for me and my family.

I did not even think "twice" about it......and my kids are perfectly fine, healthy, formula fed, non sickly, non snifflin', occassional McDonalds eatin' non runny nosed, non weird - rash-pickin, non oozing scab-riddled, non diarrhea-laden, can climb a tree, non worm-infested, non daycare bound, but have a wonderful Nanny, normal weight, TV watchin', fully vacinated, game cube and playstation playin' kids, once a year doctor visits for an annual checkup (and/or if any medical conditon, in my opinion as a parent warrants any necessary additional visits)non rattlin' cough, non chemical-sensitivity bound or any chemical sensitivity, non multiple food allergic or any allergies at all, well adjusted, sophisticated, bright, cheerful, honest, popular children who interact well socially who can function fully in the real world in 2005. I will take a fully vacinated kid HANDS down before an "at risk" child in my home anyday.....

I guess after logging on to this topic, I am going to inquire about any additional "booster" shots for myself, my hubby and kids, just to make sure that we are all still fully protected from diseases........you never know when someone who has not been fully vacinated may cross your everyday path.....I won't play russian roulette with my health and the health of my family........and to schedule an appointment for the flu shots........

I agree with vaccination as well.

HOWEVER , I am not very happy about the mandatory Hepatitis B vaccinations.

My child is NOT a IV drug user, and doesn't have unprotected sex.

He's a CHILD!!!

When you get Chicken Pox you develop a lifelong immunity from ever getting chicken pox again because of antibodies. The Chicken Pox virus does lay dormant in your body, hidden, until years later, it may come out again because of an immune problem in the form of shingles. You don't get Chicken Pox again, you get shingles.......

I can cite at least 4 sources for the above statement.......I don't know what Sisi means "by a needed "boost" a boost of what........

You are aleady immune to chicken pox if you had them.

Stress can lower your immune system bringing on shingles, age, health problems, that is why it is "generally" a disease of the elderly and they tested the vacine on people over age 60.

People may have had chicken Pox more than once because the case they had was not severe enough to produce enough antibodies. But generally the case would have genetic markers and a medical reason.

There is always an exception, but it is more common than not to only occur once.

My son had a "moderate"(apparently according to his Ped, severe according to me) case and the next year he had another case regarded as "slight"(like 6) on his chin. His Great Grandmother has had them a few times.

Me......only once......my other kids.....only once......my hubby......more than once......it apparently runs in his family.

But the "most common" and generally accepted best practice is that once you get Chicken Pox, you develop a lifelong immunity to it.........that is with most of the people, with a few exceptions.......

www.state.health.ny.us
Does past infection with chickenpox make a person immune?

Chickenpox generally results in lifelong immunity. However, this infection may remain hidden and recur years later as shingles in a proportion of older adults and sometimes in children.

Chiildren who have a comprimised immunie system, receiving cancer treatment or steriod treatment may get shingles. But not healthy, children...

Appparently if you have shingles you are contagious, so the rash needs to be completly covered up or you could risk passing on Chicken Pox to people who have never had a vaccine or a "natural case.......to develop lifelong immunity........
I've had chicken pox THREE times! Twice as an adult. I still have never had them bad...about 8 to 10 each time.

Hey neighbor- we take our Typhoid Mary kids interstate and to Canada often. Unless we care to venture into any inner-city daycare centers, schools, or "multicultural" areas, I really don't worry. (As far as I've heard, socialist, national-health-care-programme Canada ain't exactly an oasis of health now, is it? Statistically, we'd be in more danger of contracting some weird disease with NO available vaccine, than we would be likely to spread one.)

So when these selfish, irresponsible parents choose not to protect their own children from diseases(which is their choice) we the parents of other children should not have to "pay" for their selfish and irresponsible choices, as now their choice can affect my child's health.
I would rather be selfish and healthy, risking a rare disease, than ignorant with misplaced trust and chock-full of chemicals and disease pathogens which don't always work to prevent disease and cause more health problems than they are worth.

So make sure you "warn" other parents if your child chooses to visit their homes as the parents should have "informed" consent as to allow a "risky" child into their home and have contact with their loved ones.
I was thinking some sort of tattoo on their foreheads. Or maybe dying their hair Biohazard Red and attaching bells to their clothing. Of course, I would expect the same consideration from a parent whose child was recently vaccinated with the Varicella, Measles, oral Polio, Pertussis, Diptheria, or HiB vaccines.

Getting my children vacinated was a "no brainer" decision for me and my family.
I agree wholeheartedly. :) My point exactly.

If that's your plan, you may want to inquire about having your blood titer levels checked- in lieu of unnecessary, extra "boosters" which may be doing nothing for you, physically. Though psychologically, they apparently cure anything. Really, you would be surprised at how many people are not fully "covered" by all doses/boosters of a given vaccine even though they *think* they are.

The statistics you quote, for every 10 immunized children that contract a disease..12 to 13 non vaccinated children will ,as well. WOW, "even" I didn't know the vaccines were that ineffective! ONE IN SIX BOYS HAS A LEVEL OF BRAIN INJURY AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THIMEROSAL! One in 166 children have autism , most all attributable to vaccine. Is that worth a 20% chance of being immune to a disease?
Do you believe this is some hippy political stand, on the part of parents who don't vaccinate? NO! They are educated and aware. In the 80's many children fell ill to haemophilus, children who weren't in day care, children whose parents "thought" they were doing a good thing by vaccinating against HIB. A generation is sitting with simian viral debris waiting for the potential time bomb to go off ,because of infected monkeys used in the development of polio vaccine. The children of the mid sixties are facing an epidemic of ulcerative colitis , while the link is claimed to be weak, it is pointing toward the first measle vaccines
Many, many young women are experiencing life long arthritis, anecdotally related to the rubella vaccine.

When studies PROVE the connections, WATCH THE MONEY TRAIL that puts forth sudies to prove them wrong. Do not trust a government agency, nor trust a drug company to provide you with information.
ex...Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has received $873,000 from pharmaceutical companies, tacked on the "Eli Lilly Protection Act" as a rider to a 2002 homeland security bill. The protection act was later repealed by Congress after a public outcry. Senator Frist is making another attempt to harbor big pharmaceuticals from families with infected children. He is appropriating the war on terror again by attaching a provision to the "Protecting America in the War On Terror" bill introduced to Congress this past January.

I fear for my kids, and it is true, I will not allow a newly (10-14 days after) mmr vaccinated child in my home. The children with varicella shots can have break through viral shedding forever, who knows how their little bodies and brains are infected.

I would love a safe shot! As long as we blindly accept the inferior ,toxic crap on the pediatric tray, there will be no safe shots.

Simian virus 40 (SV40) is a potent DNA tumor virus that is known to induce cancer in laboratory animals. The neoplasias induced by SV40 in animal models are brain cancers, mesothelioma, bone cancers, and systemic lymphomas. SV40 oncogenesis is mediated primarily by the viral large tumor antigen, which inactivates the tumor suppressor proteins p53 and pRb family members. Evidence indicates that SV40 is an emergent human pathogen and that a significant excess risk of SV40 is associated with primary human brain cancers, malignant mesothelioma, bone cancers, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Therefore, the major types of tumors induced by SV40 in laboratory animals are the same as those human malignancies found to contain SV40 markers. Experimental and clinical data indicate that SV40 may be functionally important in the development of some of those malignancies. Recently, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies concluded that SV40 infections could lead to cancer in humans under natural conditions (based on moderate strength biologic evidence). This review examines the data implicating SV40 in the pathogenesis of human lymphomas and discusses future directions to define the causative role for SV40 in these malignancies.

note:
Did you know, that before the mmr, the only KNOWN cause of autism was rubella infection? I find this interesting enough not to inject my child with rubella.

I have a firend who's family has whooping cough right now. She found out that her family vaccine was only good for 10 years and they received the vaccine over 10 years ago. Anyone familiar with that?

(Health News, November 10th, 2004, 2:34 p.m.)

59 Virginians had whopping cough in 1997. Last year, that number was 219. The disease is hitting teenagers hard. When 16-year old Zack Graham started coughing, his family first assumed it was just a winter cold. But after two weeks of coughing, Zack finally went to the doctor.

Zack tells us, "My symptoms were coughing and vomiting a lot. And my family was very worried about it so we went to see my doctor, at which point he diagnosed me with whopping cough." The CDC says whopping cough or pertussis is on the rise in teenagers because the vaccine they got at age four is no longer effective after five to ten years.

Although rarely fatal in teenagers, if whopping cough is not treated, the severe coughing can lead to a hernia or even a broken rib. Dr. Amy Middleman comments, "Currently there is no vaccine licensed for those who are 7 years of age and older. Adding a pertussis component to the tetanus/diptheria booster that is currently already being given would help protect this vulnerable adolescent population against pertussis."

A whopping cough booster vaccine is currently under review by the FDA and may be available sometime next year. Meanwhile doctors say take your teenager to the doctor if coughing fits last for more than 7 days.

By Sun Wire Services - Toronto Sun - October 13, 2005

BOSTON -- Two safer new vaccines against whooping cough could prevent cases among teens and adults and keep them from infecting children, who can die from the illness, a U.S. government study found.

The vaccine, tested on nearly 2,800 Americans aged 15 to 65, proved 92% effective in preventing infection with the highly contagious germ.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, can cause weeks of misery and coughing so severe it cracks ribs. The bacterial disease can kill children, particularly unvaccinated babies. Most kids get several shots against whooping cough by age 6. However, immunity wears off over time.

I hope this family is going to be O.K........

Thanks CL.,me too. They ALL have it and have been sick for three months and the doctor told them to expect two more.:( It's been pretty miserable. They did tell them they were close to a better vaccine.

Three More Polio Cases Found in Minn.
Thursday, October 13, 2005

ST. PAUL — Three cases of polio (search) virus infection have been identified in an Amish community (search) in central Minnesota (search) family, the state Health Department said Thursday.

The revelation comes weeks after an infant from the same part of the state was found to be infected with the virus.

Health investigators said there were direct links between the family of the three children and the family of the first infant found to have the virus. The families are not related by blood, health officials said

I agree that some people are genetically predisposed to having reactions to immunizations.

Both of my children have all their immunizations, even the chicken pox vaccine and so far have fared well...with no adverse reactions. However, I now have to be wary of anyone who has had a recent vaccine and make sure that it was not a live vaccine. My oldest had a liver transplant a few years ago and no one in the immediate family is to have any live vaccinations. If they do, they are to be quaratined from her for at least 6 weeks, because of her compromised immune system, she can contract the disease that the shot was intended to protect one from.
