At what point does or can a judge realize that the defendant has ineffective counsel? And is he obligated to stop the trial, if so?

Glad you asked this question. I've been wondering the same thing as I watched this trial this week. From some of the expressions on Judge Perry's face while listening to Baez's motions, you could almost see this subject churning away in his mind.
 
I voted yes. The addition of Cheney Mason to the DT should make it a no brainer defense. So why not a better defense than the daddy-made-me-do-it? Maybe in his dotage he's lost his edge.
 
After listening to that Casey-esque whopper of an opening statement by the DT, I really have to wonder... Could she go for ineffective counsel if it was HER idea to come up with that gem? :waitasec:
