WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department announced on Monday, November 7 that there are two suspects of interest in a recent missing person case involving 16-year-old Miyonna Jones.

“Since receiving this case last week, the Wilmington Police Department, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, and other partner agencies have dedicated considerable resources, working tirelessly to find answers in regards to her disappearance. At this time, the WPD does suspect foul play in this case,” stated the WPD in the release.

They also write that they have been in constant contact with Miyonna Jones’ family and with the NHC District Attorney’s Office.

“There will be a first appearance for a suspect of interest, 25-year-old Jahreese Jones of Wilmington, at 2 p.m. on charges unrelated to the missing person’s case. He has been in custody since Wednesday, November 2, 2022. The suspect’s girlfriend, 27-year-old Randi Johnson of Wilmington, will also make a first appearance for obstruction charges related to Miyonna’s case,” wrote the WPD.

Miyonna Jones was declared missing on November 2 and was last seen on November 1 in Wilmington, according to that missing person report.

According to the District Attorney’s office, Jahreese Jones, Miyonna’s half-brother, was reported to allegedly have had a minor in his car who is now missing. Jones also asked for a court-appointed lawyer. The DA asked for a no contact order for the victim or Randi Johnson.

He is currently under a $1,275,000 bond and will have a hearing if he posts the bond.

Randi Johnson also appeared in court, though the DA was not confident that she was not involved. The DA asked the court for a no contact order with Jones. He also said that he believed horrible things have happened to Miyonna.

Johnson is currently under a $100,000 bond.

WPD asks anyone with information to call them at 910-343-3609.

Almost one week later, officers in a Nov. 7 news release said there was a “suspect of interest” in the girl’s disappearance. The suspect’s girlfriend faced a court appearance for obstruction charges in the case.

The update comes after a Facebook user named Miaya Sellers identified herself as the teen’s mother and criticized the response from police. Sellers said officers didn’t return her calls in the hours after her daughter was reported missing. “It took almost 3 hours to get an officer to show up to make a report,” she wrote on Facebook. “Even once they got to me and my family, they seemed to not take the matter seriously.”

Half brother. Wonder which side of the family he's from.

Story on the previous sexual assault(s) and conviction.

My goodness....my heart aches for what this poor girl has been put through. As a grown women I feel defenseless and vulnerable at times....I can't imagine how she must've felt.

Considering the streak of attacks he made in the article mentioned....along with the public nature of the assault on campus in a stairwell, it is obvious his behaviors were escalating. So I'm going to assume he hasn't been out of prison for very long before striking again....and learning to dispose of his victims or evidence in a landfill. Anytime there is a girlfriend or female assisting these nasty animals....well.. I just have a really hard time having any compassion regardless of their life story.

I wonder if this is the same Jahreese Jones that was assaulted in Wilmington in 2014? Timing/ages work out, but cannot tell for sure. It came up when looking for information on him.

Regardless of my post above, I am sad to think of what could have happened to Miyonna. The idea of his past crimes escalating to something even more evil.

Yes, it does look like the same one.
"He had two bleeds on the brain and his brain was swelling," Todd explained.

She said the day after the incident her son's condition only got worse.

"Part of his skull was removed. Part of his front lobe of his brain was removed," Todd explained through teary eyes.

Could this incident have led to his extreme behavior?

If it is the same person, it certainly seems like a life-altering event. Going from a young man who took out the trash and helped others, as stated in the article about his beating in 2014 to sexual assault as stated in the article about his priors in 2017.

Yes, head injuries can completely change a person’s personality and behavior. This was a severe head injury and he could have been completely “normal” before and become a sexual predator afterward. Or he may have been able to control violent or sexually deviant thoughts before, but acted on them afterward.

ETA: I wonder if the age of his victims had anything to do with his own age when injured (16). Kind of stuck in time. That’s just moo, from watching too much TV.

Was any medical conditions brought up in his first criminal trial?

Despite the difficulties of the case, the DA’s office was able to present enough evidence to compel Jones to plead guilty to second degree sexual offense and three counts of assault on a female.

“I’m glad that Jones plead guilty and took responsibility for his actions,” Jordan said. “It allowed us provide justice and some closure for the victims, both those that participate in the case and those that did not.”

Jones was sentenced to a minimum of 56 months and up to 128 months. Jones will be forbidden from having contact with the victim of his sexual assault for the rest of his life; he will also register as a sex offender for 30 years following his release from prison.

So he pled guilty, no details provided on a possible defense.

Was the case difficult because two of the victims refused to testify, or because he may have had a TBI medical condititon?

Excellent question. If he were very rich and could afford a very thorough (and usually expensive) criminal defense, it at least should have been discussed, I believe.
