Sen. John Hoffman and Rep. Melissa Hortman, as well as their spouses, were shot, sources told FOX 9. They are both Democrats.
The shootings happened in Champlin and Brooklyn Park.
Authorities are also telling people in the area not to answer their door for a police officer unless it's two officers together, or call 911 to confirm the identity of the officer at your door.

One Minnesota lawmaker and her spouse were fatally shot and a second lawmaker and his spouse were injured in separate "targeted shootings" at their homes in eastern Minnesota, officials said.

Gov. Tim Walz said the shootings appear to be "politically motivated" and "targeted political violence."

Walz at a news conference identified the slain lawmaker as State Rep. Melissa Hortman of Brooklyn Park and her husband, Mark, while state Sen. John Hoffman of Champlin and his wife, Yvette, were injured. Both were members of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party.

Wow, a whole new level - targeted and shot within the privacy of their homes. Very, very, scary.

law enforcement officials say they made a proactive check at Rep. Hortman's home after a lawmaker who lived nearby was shot and found a "police vehicle in the driveway with emergency lights and what appeared to be a police officer at the door coming out of the house."
He was actually the gunman.

Law enforcement official on Hortman shooting: "It was knocking on the door and asking the person to come out. Absolutely impersonating a police officer ... we have the suspect's car. The suspect is on foot."

Law enforcement official: "When we did a search of the vehicle, there was a manifesto that identified many lawmakers and other officials." (The suspect is not in custody at this time.)

This is absolutely horrifying. I hope they find him quickly. One good thing with having his manifesto and a list of names is they could immediately get to their houses and protect them.

I'm presuming here that to the other police officers the suspect just seemed like another police officer, and as a result he just walked away from the scene.

Anyway, as the suspect was dressed like a police officer with police equipment and driving a police vehicle, I take it that they are sure it wasn't an actual police officer who committed the crimes?

Holy carp!!! Caught the guy coming out of the house and car in the driveway!!

How could someone who wasn't a police officer, get his hands on an official vehicle complete with lights and labels without it being reported? No officers realized their vehicle had been stolen? Seems odd. MOO MOO MOO
Hence my question in the post above. Here in the UK we have a saying, if it quacks like a duck, waddles like a duck and looks like a duck, then it's a duck.

My working assumption would be that it's a cop gone rogue until proved otherwise.

That's what I was thinking. He has all the identifying characteristics of a police officer. Perhaps he was not impersonating? In any case, I hope there are not more victims that have not yet been discovered.

Authorities say he was “impersonating” a police officer. They also have the vehicle. It seems they would know by now if he was actual LE.

Law enforcement was first called around 2 a.m. local time on Saturday with reports that someone had shot Minnesota State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife. Police responded to their home and provided life-saving measures before the couple was transported to the hospital, according to Drew Evans, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension superintendent.

Around 3:35 a.m., another call came in when officers were proactively checking on Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman’s home.

When Brooklyn Park police officers arrived, they noticed that there was a police vehicle in the driveway with emergency lights on and what appeared to be a police officer at the door, coming out of the house, officials said. That individual immediately fired a weapon at them, Evans said, and an exchange of gunfire took place, during which the suspect was able to escape.
