MN - Alex Pretti dead after Minneapolis shooting involving immigration agents, US media report, January 24, 2026

The Military Times article, pulling from the Associated Press, is in the Veterans section of their news, but doesn't indicate that he was a veteran. He is probably there because of his service to the VA hospital. He was a Boy Scout and sang in a boy's choir in school.

His ex-wife said that "Pretti got a permit to carry a concealed firearm about three years ago and that he owned at least one semiautomatic handgun when they separated."

His neighbors "knew he had guns — he’d occasionally take a rifle to shoot at a gun range — but were surprised at the idea that he might carry a pistol on the streets."

Yeah, I think if he were a veteran, we'd know by now. Though, working at the VA Hospital is a form of service to the nation, imo.

Did anyone see Pretti approach officers brandishing a 9mm gun? Seriously asking.
no. but he gets pepper sprayed too. I wonder if that is so painful that he flailed a bit and could not see. he was not wearing anything over his face. He does have his arms up, not out to push or punch.
I do not understand how these three(?) people wound up attacked because there are a lot of people around and the ICE officers go from zero to death really rapidly. do they have citizen targets as well as the illegal criminals they are supposedly out to arrest? they do not cuff and arrest people either- they kill them very quickly as if they are enemy combatants.

NYC responds to the killing by ICE agents in Minneapolis today:

Hours after ICE agents in Minneapolis shot and killed its second protester this month, hundreds of New Yorkers took to the streets of Lower Manhattan amid arctic temperatures on Saturday to demand an end to the federal agency’s escalating operations.

Austin, Texas responds to the Minneapolis ICE killing (keeping in mind the weather across much of the nation is terrible this weekend):

As freezing temperatures descended on Austin, a local group announced last-minute emergency protests after Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers fatally shot a man in Minneapolis

Pretti was a U.S. citizen, born in Illinois. Like Good, court records showed he had no criminal record and his family said he had never had any interactions with law enforcement beyond a handful of traffic tickets.

Firearm carried by armed man, according to Homeland Security

The US Department of Homeland Security has shared a photo of what it says is the gun carried by the armed man who was shot dead in Minneapolis today.

Gun laid down on what appears to be seat in car

US DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY

That could be a picture of ANY gun. MOO

Also I doubt it’s protocol of ANY law enforcement to lay a firearm on the seat of a car to take a photo of it. And that photo was released hours ago, very shortly after the incident. Why would LE release this? Why wasn’t the firearm properly secured and put with other evidence from the crime scene? It almost seems like they are parading it around and showing it off. All MOO

You mean the one that should be in an evidence bag? The gun just lying there in open view on the seat meaning that LE broke the chain of evidence? That gun?
I agree. It should be in evidence bags by the local LE who were forcefully prevented from securing the scene so they could investigate the killing.

It shouldn't be sitting in the back seat of a car.

In addition to its evidentiary value, it is also a weapon. The licensed owner had it appropriately holstered. Once it was removed from the victim, it appears to have been handled irresponsibly. Casually dumping a weapon in the back seat like an empty chip bag that is very dangerous and I can't imagine anyone well-trained would leave it like that.

I've been wondering how Austin escapes the huge ICE activity. After all, Texas has more undocumented immigrants than almost any other state. I can only guess it's because it's a red state. But if these protests get very large I wouldn't be surprised to see Austin in their cross hairs next.
FWIW, I think Maine is next. And I suspect Maine will react like Minnesota has.

Ok YouTube. I’m not saying it’s the case here, but can’t videos be altered or created by ai these days?
The altered version will be provided by the ICE overseers. MOO

Apparently, as reported by CBS News, just three minor traffic tickets.

Border Patrol Union expresses 'full confidence' in agents using 'justifiable force'

The Border Patrol Union says it has "full confidence that when more facts are revealed, our agents and officers will be shown to have utilized justifiable force in eliminating the threat".

In a post on social media, it says "Border Patrol agents are trained extremely well to protect themselves, their fellow agents, and innocent third parties".

The statement adds that when a protester brings a weapon with them, "there are going to be severe consequences and repercussions".

Horsepucky, as my husband used to say. MOO

And if it is the gun, shouldn't it be in an evidence bag?? Their "training" didn't cover chain of custody?

As news continues to develop on protests across the US after federal agents killed Alex Pretti, videos posted to social media show that seemingly thousands of Americans are braving bitter temperatures to call for accountability.

In Boston, hundreds marched with signs bearing calls to action such as “Abolish and prosecute ICE,” “ICE OUT,” and “RESIST.”

Chicago, which has been an ongoing target of Donald Trump’s ramped up immigration enforcement, also saw at least one protest. Some demonstrators there held signs calling for a general strike.

A statement from the family of Alex Pretti, obtained by CNN:

"We are heartbroken but also very angry.Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman…

Republican chair of House Homeland Security Committee requests ICE, CBP, USCIS appear before Congress

BY MATT BROWN

Rep. Andrew Garbarino, a New York Republican who chairs the committee that oversees the Department of Homeland Security, sent a letter to the department requesting three top officials appear for questioning before the committee.

“As chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, my top priority remains keeping Americans safe and ensuring the Department of Homeland Security can accomplish its core mission,” Garbarino said in a statement. “Congress has an important responsibility to ensure the safety of law enforcement and the people they serve and protect.”

Garbarino requested that Immigration and Customs Enforcement senior official Todd Lyons, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow appear.

The public hearing would take place sometime in the next two months. Garbarino previously requested that senior DHS officials appear before the committee in a Jan. 15 letter.

If there's a charge of murder in this incident I'd be grateful to see definitive evidence of said charge.

If the decedent's firearm was holstered I'd be grateful to see definitive evidence therof.

My opinion is that there is much subjective speculation relative to this incident but at this juncture little factual evidence exists of what truly occurred in the tussell seen in the vids.
