Chicago mayor signs executive order calling on police to investigate federal immigration agents accused of misconduct

“We are putting ICE on notice in our city. Chicago will not sit idly by while Trump floods federal agents into our communities and terrorizes our residents,” Johnson said in a statement, referring to President Donald Trump’s controversial immigration enforcement efforts around the country.

“We need to send a clear message: If the federal government will not hold these rogue actors accountable, then Chicago will do everything in our power to bring these agents to justice,” Johnson said shortly before signing the so-called “Ice On Notice” executive order.

“This executive order will make Chicago the first city in the country to set the groundwork to prosecute ICE and Border Patrol agents for criminal misconduct,” the mayor said.

The order directs the Chicago Police Department to document federal enforcement actions, preserve body-camera footage, attempt to identify the federal supervisory officer on scene of an incident, complete a report on the alleged misconduct and immediately summon emergency medical services, according to Johnson.

The Chicago police should follow ICE/BP/Federal Agents around and film them....

I know...police department resources are limited, but would be interesting.

They should do that in Minneapolis, St Paul too.....

Pho, handwarmers, grief and loss: a week on the block where Alex Pretti was killed

Nothing is quite as it used to be along Nicollet Avenue.

The spot where Alex Pretti was gunned down by federal agents has been cordoned off by orange stakes and caution tape, appearing like a giant gash along the block between 26th and 27th streets.

“It’s almost like a loss of innocence for a part of the neighborhood that was just pure joy before,” said Aldona Martinka, a healthcare worker who has lived in the area for more than a decade.

The Jamaican restaurant and the thrift store along this stretch of Minneapolis’s Whittier neighborhood have transformed into community gathering spaces, open to mourners who have come from near and far. All along the corridor, also known as “Eat Street” due to the preponderance of restaurants and bars featuring global cuisines, restaurants are offering free food and handwarmers.

Each night, there is a different sort of performance or dedication. On Monday, Brass Solidarity – a band founded in 2021 in response to the murder of George Floyd – played a blaring rendition of Stand by Me as a crowd sang along. On Tuesday, Kalpulli Yaocenoxtli, a Mexica-Nahua cultural group based in St Paul, performed several dances in solidarity and remembrance.

“I will never be able to walk by this corner again without thinking about this really horrible time for our neighborhood and our city,” she said.

This is what future generations are going to be studying for US history, its quite overwhelming to think what is happening right now will be one of the most significant periods in the US as a country.

Something that really stands out is the external fears that used to dominate headlines i.e. Putin are now just a blip in focus as the dangers are inside the house :(

Mamdani to sign bill barring ICE from operating out of Rikers or any NYC correctional facility

New York City is set to bar ICE from operating at any of its 19 correction facilities — including Rikers Island.

The Safer Sanctuary Act, which Mayor Zohran Mamdani is expected to sign into law in the coming days, significantly expands limits on city officials’ collaboration with federal agents during immigration crackdowns. Currently, sanctuary city status only focuses on cooperation with ICE.

The City Council voted 44 to 7 to override Adams’s veto Thursday, setting the Big Apple up for a showdown with the Trump Administration.

“What it does is respond to the current way that Trump is weaponizing ICE,” she said.

This comes the same week as Gov. Kathy Hochul proposing a state version of the bill Friday that aims to end existing agreements between local and federal law enforcement.
