Unfortunately since he was extremely intoxicated, he likely wasn't thinking straight and may have done things he normally wouldn't do like go traipsing through difficult terrain. Maybe he was panicking about being lost/trying to get home and kept moving...just in the wrong direction. He had no phone at that point, no way of finding his way home. I can see getting panicked in that situation if you are really drunk.
Why did they get dropped off where they did when it was so far from his home? Did the other two friends live in that area, so he figured it would be fine to just stop there and walk the 45 min home? That's not a small walk in the middle of the night and while drunk, that's for sure.
