Chief Tim Gannon of Brooklyn Center Police Department in MN says he believes the officer meant to pull out his taser when he shot Daunte Wright. "This appears to me, from what I viewed & the officer's reaction in distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge."

Aren't tasers supposed to be placed on non-dominant side of the body?
@Gia_Vang

Reporter: Do you believe this officer should be terminated? Chief: That officer is afforded due process just like anyone else.
Chief is back and apologized saying he left because he's used to handing this off to the BCA. SMH. This is kind of a cluster.

Mayor Elliott is asking someone off camera if the chief is "engaged" and why he can't answer questions right now about training, officer records, etc.

Chief says the officer is a "very senior officer."

Chief said the tabs were expired on the vehicle Daunte Wright was in. Officers discovered there was a “hanging item” in the rear view mirror. Then ran his name and found he had a warrant.

Reporter: Are you aware there's a delay in getting tabs? We're in a pandemic, etc. Chief: I am aware of that. Reporter: Is your staff aware of that? Chief: Yes they are.

My tags expired in November. Last week I went in and got my current ones. Because of the pandemic the government allowed people to drive without updated tags. Not only have I been driving with expired tags, I've been driving with my license plate completely unreadable because a whole series of plates starting with the letter "B" had the paint peel off so they were down to bare metal. Never got pulled over because LE got the memo. Offices were closed for several months, anyway so I had no way of getting new ones.

And coincidently in 2020 my driver's license expired as well. Same thing, been driving for 4 months with an expired license.

My license is connected to my health card too, which also expired in November. Doctors and hospitals overlook expired OHIP cards because of the pandemic.

Now I have new plates, new license, still waiting for a new health card but it's on its way.

Does it sound like the girlfriend says "Don't taze him?"

That's one helluva mistake.
I am not trained in restraining people, but it looks like the same officer also lost control of him in the first place. I am interested in her experience (or lack of experience) on the force, to be honest.

Oh of course not. That’s not what I meant at all! But when I get pulled over, I hand them my license and comply and I’m on my way. If I try to run from them I would expect, at the very least, to get my butt beat and thrown in jail. If he would have just complied and got arrested then he would still be alive. That officer was completely wrong and I don’t agree with drawing guns for any reason and I hope something is done about her.

Do you worry, though, when you reach for your license you will be shot? I think that is one of the reasons many minorities appear not to comply.

The most recent case of the army lieutenant who was sprayed with mace was getting conflicting orders. He was ordered to put his hands outside of the vehicle. He was ordered to open the door and put his hands where the officers could see them. He was ordered to undo his seatbelt. Both of the last two orders conflict with showing your hands. So what appears as not complying is actually a fear that reaching down to undo his seatbelt will get him killed. Same for reaching down and opening the car door.

There was an absolutely tragic case a few years ago of a man in an hotel who was shot and killed by police in a case of an unfounded report. A law enforcement team dressed in camo were yelling at him to lie down put his hands on his head at the same time others were yelling to get down on the ground and shimmy forward. In doings so, his sweatpants started to come down and he instinctively reached down to pull them up, and he was shot in the head.

Daniel Shaver: Police officer not guilty of murder

I, too, worry sometimes during my forays into the US that I could get shot because I'm not used to sitting with my hands in full view of an officer if I get pulled over. I'm already reaching over to my glove box to get my ownership and insurance or rooting through my purse to get my license.

It's one thing to get pulled over as a middle-aged white woman in a nice car, and a totally different experience to be pulled over as a person of color, in any type of car; if it's a beater, is your inspection up to date, if that's a thing in that state? Is there a signal out? Brakes squeaking? If it's a nice car, that's suspect, as well. Who owns or leases it? Is it insured? What do you do to pay for it? It would terrifying, as a person of color, to get pulled over or approached by LE in any circumstances, these days.

I really want to know why they pulled him over in the first place. Was it a warrant that they knew about? Was it the air fresheners? No matter what, it can't justify his death.

@branmuffin , I've been following the case of the army medic, as well. Another completely overblown reaction, and he was clearly terrified.

This needs to stop.

All MOO.

Not an excuse, but wondering if the officer was suffering from PTSD from a previous incident or encounter?

Is that football?

Hockey ;) Sorry, I am Canadian, I just assume everyone is a hockey fan lol

ETA: I am also a huge Wild fan, so knew they played tonight and wondered last night if that would be wise in light of what happened.

The thing is, I actually believe her but how can this happen?
How badly trained was she? Did she know herself that she was not made for this job? How long has she been a cop?

If that is the case, she shouldn't be out there as it's a danger to the community.

I don't want to minimize the victim at all... but geesh, she sure sounded surprised/shocked that she shot him, and I believe this truly was a mistake from what I saw. She must be a mess right now too. JMO

Senior officer. I thought I heard that, but thought surely I had misheard.

I thought it was reported she has been a officer for five years, although I could have misheard/read.

What a tragic story.
