I'm curious what the officers would have done if he hadn't gotten back in his vehicle but instead just started to run. Would they have given chase? Would they have un-holstered their weapons and start firing?

IMO it appears after LE engage with a suspect the most important aspect of the interaction is that the person be arrested. Regardless of the severity of the outstanding charges. We've seen LE try to arrest someone for non payment of alimony then shoot and kill them when they ran. At what point in time does the charge against the individual play a part in the urgency of the arrest?

To me it's the same as LE getting involved in car chases. More than 5000 people were killed between 1979 and 2015 during police chases which included nearly 2500 bystanders. Almost all were for traffic stops.

Agreed. Years ago, they used to put warrants out for people who missed paying a traffic ticket. Mickey was almost cuffed and put in jail, seriously! Due to a series of unfortunate events, I didn't pay a traffic ticket. When I went to the courthouse to pay it, I was told that there was a warrant out for me, and I needed to see a judge. I had to pay $1200, right then, cash, for bail...or wait in jail.

Yeah, I had the cash. The officer seemed quite put out about that.

But how does one learn if they have any warrants? I have faced a friend who was in handcuffs because of an issue with her pet (outstanding warrant)
I was once stopped by police in a very odd circumstance, and for spurious reasons IMO.
Both situations were ultimately resolved, without resistance or violence on either side. I would add that myself and my friend were both absolutely petrified.

Arresting and charging Kim Porter won’t bring back Daunte Wright and it won’t save the lives we’ll lose if policing remains what it is. We have to dismantle the system that’s killing people, it’s not enough to reprimand the system after it kills.

Agreed. Apparently, everyone is supposed to live in a "perfect" world based on some notion that we all live at the same address, receive mail, open mail. And immediately have the money to pay the amount of the ticket.

Or in the victim's case, who knows? The world is full of drama. Things happen. That doesn't make the victim a bad person, and certainly he didn't do anything, INMO, that merited the escalated response by the officer. Seems like this could have been managed more effectively. But I was not there. Did the officer think he was going for a weapon? We don't know.

How is this even a little bit relevant? The punishment for resisting arrest is not being shot. With a gun OR a taser. It has not escalated to that degree. We can all see what happened with our own eyes. She was afraid of him. And it was not because of any knowledge of a previous incident.

When an individual resist arrest and tries to reenter a vehicle, which could have a weapon, officers do react.

Its terrible what happened, a mother lost her son.

Resisting arrest is not punishable by the death penalty.

What if he scrambled in the car and sped away? Certainly he would have been pursued in some fashion by LE and arrested....and lived to see his day in court.

My thought .....

The potential of a weapon in the vehicle triggered the urgency. He had an outstanding warrant for robbery at gun point, choked the woman and violation of probation.

He was cooperating it appeared until the officer tried to handcuff him.

Its a terrible tragedy.

He was not an immediate danger. He could have been caught and arrested without shooting him and without a high-speed chase.

It's not as if they were out looking for a dangerous criminal in the first place. They pulled him over for a traffic violation.

Exactly.This young man didn't have to die and she didn't even follow the rules with her use of the taser.You are supposed to give the person time to respond but she yelled taser and shot right away.We can't keep making excuses for these types of cops because they are a disgrace to the many good cops out there.Enough is enough.

He was going back into his car. I meant the POSSIBILITY of a high speed chase. We have no way of knowing what his intentions were in heading back into his car. Neither did the arresting officers.

Anyone could have a weapon. Who gets to decide this person might have a weapon so it is OK to shoot him? That's why lethal force is restricted to when there is an actual threat, not just a potential one.
