Elder said he did not know the ages of the children but "they're young, we're not talking teenagers."

The shooting appears to be a "domestic" situation, according to Elder.

Police spokesman John Elder describes the two boys as “not yet teenagers.” He says it appears they had been playing in the snow “when the suspect pulled up and shot them both."

He says officers believe more people could be inside the home and that it “appears to be a hostage situation.”

Elder has not described the relationship between the male suspect and the children who were killed. He says officers who recovered the boys’ bodies heard more gunfire nearby.

A SWAT team has a house surrounded where a man believed to be the gunman is inside. Police have not been able to make contact with the suspect. Neighbors in the area were evacuated from their homes.

Neighborhoods to Avoid When Visiting Minneapolis

Midtown Minneapolis and the Phillips neighborhood also suffer from high crime rates. The Phillips neighborhood is immediately south of downtown Minneapolis and bordered by Hiawatha Avenue to the east, Lake Street to the south and I-35W to the west. Areas where crime is higher extend outside Phillips, several blocks south of Lake Street, and around a mile west of I-35W.

Given the fact that LE has not been able to establish contact w/ the suspect coupled with the fact that the LEOs who recovered the boys' bodies reported hearing more gunfire nearby, it's entirely possible if not likely that the suspect has already killed himself inside the home.
