Found Deceased MN - Henry McCabe, 31, Mounds View, 7 September 2015

Do we know what kind of phone he had? Was it possibly water resistant or waterproof? Or if he had a case on it that was water resistant? That could explain why the phone was still operable while getting wet.
I followed this case early on and seriously thought there would have been an arrest by now as IMHO he did not accidentally drown.

I recall it was an android on TMobile but I am not sure if we ever found out the make and model. If he was being drowned during the voice mail I would guess his head was being held in, with the phone out of the water in his coat or pant pocket.

Are there any updates on this case?

I believe they just chalked it up to drowning and closed it without further investigation. This is not a smiley face murder by the way, it has no similarities at all other than a man found in water. It seems clear what transpired, not sure why LE hasn't been able to offer a better explanation other than he walked into a pond in the opposite direction of his house, tried calling his family, then drowned to death. Not buying it.

He doesn't sound like he's growling to me, he sounds like he is being waterboarded.

Im not buying accidental death either. The extra alleged voice that said "stop it" near the end is proof there was at least two other people with him.

I read up on this case for the first time and I think one of two things happened.

Either he was purposely drowned in that lake or
Someone was tazering him multiple times and his heart gave out. Could explain the horrible noises as the tazer electricity interfered with the cell phone as he was screaming in pain. Then after realizing he was dead they dumped his body in the lake.

Its a sad case and wish someone would be held accountable.

Fascinating mystery. If water were involved, though - wouldn't we hear a splash?

The ME would be able to determine whether he died by drowning or his body was dumped in the water after he died. But, even if he died by drowning, that doesn't rule out foul play.

I really think it's odd (suspicious) that one of his friends had his house key while the other had his wallet. And the one who dropped him off couldn't even remember the gas station where he left HM. What does surveillance footage from the gas station show? Why didn't the friend take HM home and make sure he got inside safely (I don't recall if he was the same friend who had Henry's keys)?

Does anyone think he staged this?
All these calls to me seem he is doing this on purpose.

Just a thought!

well you were totally wrong!

Hi Folks
Thought I would add this.
A couple of years ago I was out fishing one night in a fairly desolate area of bushland near our capital Canberra (yes I'm Australian)..
As I was walking through the dark with my flashlight and also under moonlight I was suddenly startled by a deer standing right in front of me.
The noises it then made whilst looking at me were almost identical to Henry's VM...and I mean identical.
This also makes sense that when the animal stops 'communicating' Henry says '..stop it''...kinda ..'oh hush...etc'
Henry then continues on his way home but has to go south of Long Lake then up to Rush Lake where somehow he falls in and drowns.
He has not really walked too far out of his way from where he was dropped , just went south of the lake (long lake) when he might have gone north of it but really still in the right direction.
In the area I discovered deer are common and this makes perfect sense to me.
The only query I'm left with is the assertion that Henry said he had been shot.
Without hearing this, I going to assume that this was somehow incorrect and was misheard.
An even bigger mystery to me is why the police nor the FBI who apparently analysed the recording did not immeadiately suspect a deer as the source of the noise.
Google 'strange noises by deer'....I'm sure you will find the noises before too long.

Minnesota does have a ton of deer for sure, but this pond is surrounded by residential zones triangulated by freeways. It could have been a coyote or a roaming dog though. That might make someone run in an odd direction and stumble into water. This case comes to mind every so often and I truly hope his family gets answers if there are more to be learned.

The thought of a tazer is interesting, since in the voicemail he says something like "I've been shot" but there were no bullet wounds...

@Hatfield in retrospect I think you were really onto something here. The subsequent quashing of any investigation makes me wonder if LE were involved here.
