I'd like to know if the actual rape happened in Cold Spring or a nearby community. So many unanswered questions.

It happened 5 miles north of nearby Richmond.

"The Cold Spring boy had just finished ice skating with two friends Jan. 13 and was walking home alone when a man drove up and pulled him into a car. The boy lived about four blocks away. The man drove him about 5 miles to an area north of Richmond where he molested him. The abductor later dumped the boy from his car and told him to run or he'd shoot. The boy said he never saw a gun. The abductor in Cold Spring was not wearing a mask, and the victim saw his face during the three hours they were together."

Thank you! I thought I remembered Richmond being mentioned someplace, but couldn't find it.

(And I must be getting senile, cuz I was googling the info I posted above about the 1996 search warrants being unsealed and 3 suspects, and I found I'd already posted about this on WS back in 2004. oops. LOL) http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4443&page=6

For those not familiar with Central MN geography, if you go to google maps and type in "el rancho manana mn" (which is a big campground north of Richmond) you can see that also further north of Richmond is Collegeville, where St. John's abbey is located. Off to the East (right on map) are Cold Spring and St. Joe.

It was some farm worker that was working at the farm. I don't remember how he met the boys, but there were a few.

Why can't I find it on the net???

A few things that bother me about the time line:

May 16, 1996: Search warrants authorities thought were sealed are released to the public. A Paynesville-area man who fit the description of a man suspected of abducting and sexually assaulting a Cold Spring boy. Authorities searched his home three months after the Cold Spring abduction. Police then said that the man wasn’t a top suspect in the St. Joseph abduction, but at least one paragraph in the search warrant was blocked out.

May 2004: Media reports surface that link Jacob’s abduction to the abduction and sexual assault of the 12-year-old Cold Spring boy. The boy was taken 10 months before Jacob. The victim comes forward and said he believes links exist. Authorities receive about 20 new tips. But investigators believe the cases likely aren’t related.

So is the Paynesville area man still the likely perp in the Cold Spring case?
And how are the two not related?, it's obvious it was the same person unless there were two different perps in the area using the same MO.

Found a different timeline on Jacob's abduction here:
http://www.globegazette.com/article_2b0e6832-84d0-11df-85ff-001cc4c03286.html

Check out May 16, 1996 - I don't recall those search warrants being exposed and the info on the other 3 suspects. I wonder if those old warrants are stored as pdfs anywhere online?

I wonder if this had anything to do with the new search?

October 2009: Media coverage of the 20th anniversary of the abduction generates about 30 tips within a few days.

June 30, 2010: Authorities execute a search warrant at the property adjoining.

Thnking more about DR...

School begins for teachers in late Aug, then school just after Labor Day. If the investigation takes months, DR will have a difficult time in his job. Middle school kids are merciless in the comments. Then, too, will parents object to DR teaching their child? The school district is small, so reassigning him wouldn't be an answer. To my knowledge DR has been a teacher in that district without presenting a problem to his employer. What's the answer?

depending on the laws, he may be placed on leave with pay, because he is named a person of interest.

If the law does not specify that, I imagine he will be given some pretend job that does not allow for contact with children.

I imagine the school district phones will be ringing off the hook if they put him with kids.

Yeah, I was thinking sabbatical. ;-) Honestly, I'm not as concerned about his inconvenience as I am about the Wetterlings going without answers all these years. Maybe he should have joined in the search and offered his home to be searched that first night instead of going back to bed. (JMO)

He's a POI and we don't know why. Bummer for him if it's nothing to do with him.

But it sounds like people have been suspicious of him for years, so he has lived with it apparently OK as he has had a job and enjoys his hobbies all the while living at home with his parents.

So he should have plenty of money to go where he wants when he retires which shouldn't be too long. Maybe in about three years he should be eligible for retirement.

There are so many things to consider about this case.

DR is 55. I suppose the district could offer him an early retirement. As to placing him on paid leave, because the district is small, they would need to hire another teacher. It's my understanding that DR traveled and was not just assigned to one school.

As to living with his parents, it is a way to lay claim to the property when his parents pass. I think the Rassiers had only two children (sons), and DR, having lived there all his life, I assume, would receive a better settlement. According to Stearns Co records, the property value (2009) is $1,914,800, plus another $318,180 in green acres. The other brother lives around the corner from the Rassiers. One would assume the parents gave the land to him to build there.

As to DR's status, I have a Norwegian bachelor farmer friend who is not gay, who is about the same age as DR, who has never had a gf, and who has lived with his mother all his life. I also have a female cousin and an aunt who have never had a bf, never married. Strange to some, but there are normal people like that out there.

Your farmer friend-is he as attractive as DR? Farmer's lead hard lives and it may not be that easy to find a woman who wants that kind of life. He may feel that he HAS to take care of his mother. I read those kinds of problems in Dear Abby.

There are plenty of single's out there. But living with parents all your life with the apparent income he has is strange.

Even where I live where the district is way bigger, the music teachers travel to different schools. That is very common.

Plus, with music teachers being laid off all over, getting a younger one at less money would be no problem for the district.
