Youth baseball coach killed in road rage shooting: MN police chief decries 'tragic, senseless' violence

Too many news stories to link them all. It has made national news.

IMO Another person lost to road rage. His 15 year old son is recovering from his injuries.

"Plymouth Police Chief Erik Fadden asked those in the area at the time of the incident, if they have dashcam video, to please contact CrimeStoppers or the police department.

Fadden noted that the investigation has taken a "painstakingly long" time since rain droplets on the cameras make for a difficult analyzation process.

Police also released a time-stamped map of the night of the shooting."

"Police believe the suspect came from Arden Hills and was traveling west on Interstate 694 before going south on Highway 169. The fatal shooting happened near County Road 9."

IMO
They shared the possible route the shooter took and a blurry pic of actual car and a stock pic of 2015-2020 silver Chevrolet Suburban LT.
This one will be tough to prove.

"court records reveal a Facebook Livestream video helped them crack the case.

they got a tip from a local towing company

It was an abandoned rental car - a Chevy Suburban matching the description with a Colorado plate.
When investigators checked the plate and the address of the person who rented it, they checked security video of a nearby gas station and identified a man driving the same SUV.
And when they checked his social media posts, they discovered the video.

The traffic cam video shows the same SUV speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, following it all the way to Highway 169 where authorities say MNDOT video shows the SUV trying to change lanes – apparently blocked by the coach’s car – when the shooting occurred.

able to track Smith down in Decatur Illinois by tracing where he last posted on Facebook."

IMO I'm still in shock that they caught the shooter. Amazing that the tow company towed the abandoned RENTAL 2019 silver Chevrolet Suburban LT svu AND contacted LE. The same one in the fb video and blurry highway video.
LE found the renter and in Kare 11's video it showed Westwind Apartments. I found that they were located in St. Louis Park right down the road at the NW corner of highway 169 and 394. According to Google Maps, it is 3.8 miles away from crash site!

Jamal Smith, 33, of Chicago, was booked into the Hennepin County Jail at 8:14 p.m. Tuesday night on charges of second-degree murder and aiding an offender in connection to the death of 56-year-old Jay Boughton.
His bail has been set at $2 million.

U.S. Marshals and officers from the Decatur Police Department in Illinois arrested Smith on Sept. 2, executing a nationwide search warrant that was filed on Aug. 20. He was initially taken into custody in Macon County, Illinois, and was awaiting extradition to Hennepin County.

Jamal Lindsey Smith, 33, is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., his first appearance since formal charges were filed earlier this month in the deadly July shooting of Jay Boughton as he and his son drove home from a baseball game.

Smith is charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of aiding an offender – accomplice after the fact. The first charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years, while the second carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

IMO
I wonder why the extradition from IL to MN took 2 weeks.
Just waiting the official word that he is charged! It states above that he was charged but I believe is false since he wasn't in MN until last night.

First Hearing for Suspect in Hwy 169 Shooting Delayed Due to Jail Incident

Hearing Delayed 1 Day... The man accused of killing Jay Boughton, a Crystal father, husband and coach, was scheduled to appear in a Minnesota court Wednesday afternoon. That hearing was delayed by a day due to what sheriff deputies describe as being “too violent” to meet with his court-appointed attorney.

The initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon for the man charged in the fatal shooting of a motorist traveling on a highway in Plymouth was pushed back a day because Hennepin County sheriff’s deputies said he was too violent for him to meet with his attorney and attend the virtual hearing.

In the moments before the hearing was to start for Smith and other defendants, prosecutor Judith Cole told public defense attorney Shauna Kieffer of the difficulty deputies were having with her client.
Kieffer requested from Judge David Moreno a one-day delay which was granted, meaning Smith remains jailed in lieu of $2 million preliminary bail.

“Deputies said he was too violent,” Cole said during the virtual court gathering that included attendance by two of Boughton’s family members, brother Chad Boughton and mother Nova Boughton, according to the digital roster of observers and court officials.

$1.5M bail set for alleged shooter in Highway 169 incident

The suspected gunman in the Highway 169 deadly shooting that claimed the life of a youth baseball coach in July made his first court appearance in Hennepin County Thursday.

Jamal Smith is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jay Boughton.

The judge set a high conditional bail amount, $1.5 million, saying she’s not only worried about public safety given the allegations of deadly road rage, but she’s concerned about the Illinois resident fleeing the state.

Smith, who has a home address listed in Chicago, was extradited to Minnesota earlier this week and booked into the Hennepin County Jail. There were reports he was "too violent" to make his virtual court appearance Wednesday, but his public defender claims those suggestions are completely false. He suggested he may eventually petition for the case to be moved out of Hennepin County because of the inflammatory comments that found their way into news reports.

Smith remains in jail. His defense attorney, in arguing for a lower bail amount, claimed Smith has family ties in Minnesota, specifically a young son and girlfriend, and had been working construction in the area.

Smith is scheduled to be back in court next month.

IMO
still can't believe that they found him.
Arrested Aug 24 in Decatur IL (he wasn't at his home in Chicago, was he hiding?) but he just got to MN Sept 14 (don't understand the delay).
But his lawyer states he has ties to MN like a job and family (GF and son)

Prosecutor Will Seek Upward Sentencing For Accused Highway 169 Killer If Convicted

In a court filing Wednesday, prosecutors said they will seek an upward sentencing departure for Smith based on three factors: the crime was committed in the presence of a child (Boughton’s son was in the car with him when he was shot), Smith’s alleged conduct “created a greater than normal danger to the safety of other people on the roadway” and the fact that, if convicted, this would be Smith’s third violent crime.

Prosecutors said Smith is a “dangerous offender.”

In a separate filing, prosecutors allege Smith “always carried a gun,” according to a witness, and that Smith “pointed guns at other motorists for minor reasons while driving” in the weeks and months before the shooting.
In fact, prosecutors said, Smith showed a gun to five other vehicles in the hours before the alleged crime.

Smith also faces a charge of aiding an offender after the fact. His bail has been set at $2 million.

IMO Sorry I'm monopolizing the thread (feel free to chime in). MN doesn't have the 3 strike rule (does California still?) but should apply here. Scary to think that a minor lane change can cause you your life. I know people that carry guns but they aren't waving them around at people.

Jamal Smith sentenced to life in prison in Plymouth road rage murder of Jay Boughton

Life in Prison!
life in prison with the possibility of parole in 30 years.

"Smith's attorney said until local juries better reflect the diverse Hennepin County community, verdicts will be "Difficult to accept" and it would be "unconstitutional" to sentence Smith to life given the facts of this case. He added, "This is an innocence project case waiting to happen." "
Smith said "He called the case a "Witch hunt." "
