Jeffery Trevino was found guilty of one count of second-degree murder Wednesday in the death of his wife, Kira Steger.
Trevinos family and friends sobbed as the verdicts were read in Ramsey County District Court. Trevinos and Stegers family and friends diligently sat through eight days of testimony and a morning of closing arguments Tuesday, often taking notes.
After the verdict, Marcie Steger, Kira Stegers mother said in a halting voice that she had 100 percent faith in the legal system.
I believe Kira would be very happy that he was found guilty, Marcie Steger said, standing outside the courthouse. Unfortunately shes not here. At least hes not walking around. He was found accountable.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -
After 17 hours of deliberation and a question to the judge, the jurors in the murder trial of Jeffery Trevino acquitted him of intentional second-degree murder but convicted him of second-degree murder without intent on Wednesday evening.
"Kira would be happy with today's verdict if she was here," Marcy Steger, the victim's mother, said after the verdict was read.
The mandatory minimum sentence is 10 years, for Trevino, but he could get up to 15 years.
Choi wants the Judge to depart from sentencing guidelines and put Trevino away for 30 years.
