Why do so many of these missing persons cases end up in water ? I don't get it.

That's what I'm wondering, because to get to this boat launch she would have had to take a left on to Timberlane immediately after crossing the bridge and another immediate left to access the boat launch area. It doesn't make any sense. She'd still have a few miles to go before she'd take a left on to 35 to get to 00 where she would have to take a right? Was she that enebriated that she mistook Timberlane for 35?

A PCSO press release states: "Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office Dive and Rescue team responded, entered the water, and verified a vehicle was present. The vehicle was pulled from the water and matched the vehicle Marya was driving. A deceased female was located inside the van and she was identified as the missing female, Marya Christiansen."

Why do so many of these missing persons cases end up in water ? I don't get it.

I don't know the answers and am curious what LE will say about where she entered the water....but it was after 2am following a night of partying with friends and she had to cross a river to get home. I'm guessing the area is rather rural and not necessarily lit with many lights. In any other case, going off the road would mean you're in the ditch and in need of a tow truck. But when driving around water, going off the road means you end up in a river or lake.

So sorry to hear about her loss and my heart goes out to her family.

What can be done to stop this? Other than not driving drunk but we don't know if she was drunk? More lighting around bridges? Better signage? Fences and gates? Barriers?

The main channel bridge is brightly lit, but then once you get off the bridge onto the causeway over the backwaters, it's completely dark, including the side roads to the boat landing (the turn in Wisconsin at 35 is also lit). Don't know if this could have disoriented her if she was drunk, or if you could be so drunk as to mistake an unlit crossroad with a lit state highway.

Her godmother spoke at the vigil about not drinking and driving.
The video goes into detail about the search and rescue. It is beyond sad when they mention her two children.

There should be no drinking and driving whatsoever. It's just not worth it.

It's very difficult to get out of a car in water - you literally have seconds to react to have any hope of survival, and any level of impairment is pretty much a death sentence.

One of our car shows here in the UK did a demonstration of this. Bear in mind that the presenter here has had a briefing/training, and that the car goes straight down onto the water unlike most accidents where it's likely the car goes in nose first or possibly even has time to flip over in the air. The car fills up in about 30s and starts to roll sideways. Now imagine trying to do this when you're panicking, slightly inebriated (think about trying to get your key in the door when you've had a couple), shocked from the accident and from the cold water.

Honestly? Nothing that would be - much as I hate to use the term - cost-effective. Cars still go through barriers, people ignore lights. Ultimately it's an individual decision to drive when you aren't fit to - not just through alcohol, but also tiredness, illness and so on.

One of the reports said Marya's friends tried to stop her going, if I remember rightly, so they clearly felt she shouldn't be driving for whatever reason; they must be distraught and my heart goes out to them.

That's actually the recommended practice when driving on a frozen lake, in case your car breaks through the ice. But there's so much driving and water is so ubiquitous around here that you just don't do it as a standard practice when say driving home on paved highways from a party or work you'd be constantly rolling your windows down. The tiny chance of winding up in the river doesn't justify it.

Drunk college students on foot winding up in the river was such a problem at La Crosse that they have volunteers patrol the river on weekend nights.

There's actually a tool you can buy that has not only a glass breaker on it but also a seat belt cutter. I bought one many years ago at a fair from a table that was set up by a family who's relative died in a car vs water incident. It was stated that the relative would have had a better chance at survival if they'd had that tool. To this day, that tool gets put in any car I drive within reaching distance! (I'm absolutely terrified of bridges and causeways over water, even though I'm an excellent swimmer! )

They have some that go on key rings but you have remove parts and move things around because it's compact.
