Speaking briefly to reporters as he departed the White House for Iowa, Trump said he would be “watching over” the investigation into Pretti’s killing by federal agents.

“Well you know we’re doing a big investigation,” Trump said, as the blades of Marine One spin loudly behind him on the White House lawn. “I want to see the investigation. I’m going to be watching over it. I want a very honorable and honest investigation. I have to see it myself.”

Alex Pretti suffered broken rib in confrontation with federal agents a week before he was fatally shot - CNN​

CNN has learned that federal immigration officers have been collecting personal information about protesters in Minneapolis – and had documented details about Alex Pretti before he was fatally shot on Saturday.

It is unclear how Pretti first came to the attention of federal authorities. But sources told CNN that about a week before his death, Pretti “suffered a broken rib when a group of federal officers tackled him while he was protesting their attempt to detain other individuals”.

Per CNN’s report: “The earlier incident started when [Pretti] stopped his car after observing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents chasing what he described as a family on foot, and began shouting and blowing his whistle, according to a source who asked not to be named out of fear of retribution.

“Pretti later told the source that five agents tackled him, and one leaned on his back — an encounter that left him with a broken rib. The agents quickly released him at the scene.

“‘That day, he thought he was going to die,’ said the source.

“Pretti was later given medication consistent with treating a broken rib, according to records reviewed by CNN.”

DHS did not respond to CNN’s questions about Pretti’s previous encounter or more details about efforts to collect information on protesters.

A memo sent earlier this month to agents temporarily sent to Minneapolisinstructed them to “capture all images, license plates, identifications, and general information on hotels, agitators, protestors, etc., so we can capture it all in one consolidated form,” according to correspondence reviewed by CNN.

Humans are strange.

I have a funny feeling that changing "anti ICE protester" to "Pro Life protester" and..... a certain number of people would be dialing the prudence component of legal weapons carrying waaaay up.

Some of those same humans who now cry "murder" could well be crying "FAFO" regarding a pro lifer's decision to carry a weapon to a protest.

Of course, others would strongly deny any personal bias and claim that human behavior is restricted solely to the humans on the other side.....

I really don’t see your point in this, however; if a pro-life protester was shot 10 times in the back at a pro-life rally, I would also consider that murder. And I would feel terrible for that person and their family and I would want to see whoever was responsible for that put on trial for their crime.

Edit to add: I would feel the same even if the pro-life protester who was shot had a gun on them as well.

That's your prerogative to do so. However, many times the words out of Donald Trump's mouth when referring to illegals mirrors the verbiage used by the Nazis. 'Poisoning the blood of our country', 'vermin', 'infest' and 'animals' when referring to the illegals in the US. You cannot reason that away.

When a country is continually bombarded by negative descriptors in regards to a specific subset of the population, one of two things happen: segments of the population believe and isolate the targeted as the 'other' and adjust their belief system. The second thing is another segment of the population are finally relieved that someone in a position of power is verifying and encouraging their own biases and hatred. That's why American citizens are being scooped up off the streets because of the way they look, the language they speak. Not because they are illegals but because of their looks. They spend an indeterminate amount of time being detained then dumped on the street.

I remember back in 1968 during the Democratic Convention, the protesters chanted 'the whole world is watching'. They are watching again. And what they see is horrifying. Thank god for the media and individuals who are brave enough to post what is really happening in the US right now. I think I am going to be on the right side of history. IMO

Contrary to what seems to be the belief of some, there is NO constitutional rule that states exercising your first amendment right cancels out your second amendment right. Protesting is lawful activity. Lawful gun possession by a law-abiding citizen doesn’t become unlawful because of their proximity to or attendance of a protest.

SCOTUS explicitly warned that states cannot label ordinary public places as “sensitive” just because people gather there (addressed in NYSPRA v. Bruen - https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf/20-843_7j80.pdf). Public areas where it is legal to carry a firearm do not become gun-free zones simply because a protest is happening. Trump may not like that lawful protestors are lawfully carrying weapons, but that does not magically make it unlawful. MOO.

of course, everyone has a bias. we all have opinions, experiences, prejudice. i would look at the victim who is a pro life protester differently, that’s true, but i think and hope i would still take a step back and see that such treatment of any human being is wrong, and also very worrying when it seems to be part of a bigger pattern of violence.

Agreed, he did nothing of the sort.

He in no way "inserted" himself into the incident. He went to the aid of someone who had just been violently assaulted.

Officials of the state are not employed or empowered to assault perfectly innocent citizens going about their lawful business. It was not an "incident" in the sense of it being one they were lawfully allowed to create. And, even if it were, he wasn't interfering with what they were doing. He was helping someone who had just been assaulted and was possibly injured.

In fairness, they aren't allowed to assault the guilty ones either!

Doesn't matter how they try and spin it, who they try to blame, the accountability is with the agents that are violently assaulting and executing citizens going about their business, which includes protesting, as is their right.
There is no excuse, there are no extenuating circumstances, and it doesnt appear that the agents in question are even lawfully going about their own business, so to say citizens are inserting themselves and impeding LE from doing their job as justification for murdering them is ridiculous!

Thank you! This back and forth discussion of whether he had his CWL on him and whether he was lawfully carrying is totally moot to me. It’s not like ICE agents knew he (supposedly) didn’t have his concealed permit on him when they shot him 10 times in the back. And even if he wasn’t carrying it, that does not in any way justify his murder.

Former president Joe Biden has condemned the “senseless” killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti as betraying “our most basic values as Americans”, and praised the people of Minnesota for “speaking out against injustice when they see it”.

“What has unfolded in Minneapolis this past month betrays our most basic values as Americans,” Biden said in a post on X. “We are not a nation that guns down our citizens in the street. We are not a nation that allows our citizens to be brutalized for exercising their constitutional rights. We are not a nation that tramples the 4th Amendment and tolerates our neighbors being terrorized.”

Biden said Minnesotans protesting the federal government’s immigration crackdown have “reminded us what it is to be American, and they have suffered enough at the hands of this Administration”.

“The people of Minnesota have stood strong — helping community members in unimaginable circumstances, speaking out against injustice when they see it, and holding our government accountable to the people,” he wrote.

Biden did not mention Donald Trump by name, but alluded to the president, before calling for a “full, fair, and transparent investigation” into the killings.

Violence and terror have no place in the United States of America, especially when it’s our own government targeting American citizens.

No single person can destroy what America stands for and believes in, not even a President, if we — all of America — stand up and speak out. We know who we are. It’s time to show the world. More importantly, it’s time to show ourselves.

Now, justice requires full, fair, and transparent investigations into the deaths of the two Americans who lost their lives in the city they called home.
