Federal agents kill another person in Minneapolis, officials say, prompting clash with protesters

A person is dead after a shooting in Minneapolis earlier on Saturday involving federal immigration agents from Customs and Border Protection, a U.S. official with knowledge of the incident tells CBS News.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said he has spoken to the White House "after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning."

"Minnesota has had it. This is sickening. The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now," Walz said.

The shooting occurred near Nicollet Avenue and 26th Street in south Minneapolis. City officials identified the victim as a man. Federal agents and protesters are clashing in the area, and WCCO reporter Adam Duxter confirmed agents deployed chemical irritants.

Shooting comes one day after massive march in downtown Minneapolis

Saturday's shooting comes one day after tens of thousands of people marched through downtown Minneapolis to protest ICE's presence in the city.

Exact numbers are not known, but organizers expected 50,000 people to attend the march, which started near U.S. Bank Stadium and ended with a rally at Target Center.

Federal agent shot and killed armed man, Homeland Security tells BBC

Sakshi Venkatraman
US reporter

The US Department of Homeland Security has confirmed to the BBC that a federal officer shot and killed a man in Minneapolis at 09:05 local time (15:05GMT) this morning.

Spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin says Border Patrol officers were carrying out a "targeted operation" on an "illegal alien wanted for violent assault" when someone approached with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun.

"The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted," McLaughlin says.

"Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots. Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject but was pronounced dead at the scene."

McLaughlin adds the suspect had two magazines and no identification, and that protestors arrived on the scene afterwards "to obstruct and assault law enforcement".

Here’s a live webcam from YouTube of the coverage in the area as it seems there’s still federal agents and protestors on the scene and reports of some clashes and tear gas being deployed.

It's legal with a permit to open carry in Minnesota. Just because he was carrying a gun, doesn't mean it was out and he was threatening someone with it.

Video shows scuffle, apparent gunshots

WCCO has reviewed apparent video of Saturday's shooting.

The video, which WCCO is working to verify, shows several federal agents scuffling with someone in the street, followed by the sound of several gunshots before the agents scatter.

I can’t post it here, but there’s a video of the victims wife who was on the scene when the shooting happened. I’m sure it will be picked up by the media soon, it’s extremely hard to watch.

I think they just said it is a 37-yr old male. White male. American citizen.

A news conference by Minneapolis officials has started.

We're first hearing from city police chief Brian O'Hara. Mayor Jacob Frey is also present.

I think they just said it is a 37-yr old male.
It’s very chaotic because everything is still currently happening but I think there’s 2 different incidents. There’s the 51 year old man who was shot multiple times on the ground by ICE and then during the protests that immediately followed the shooting, another man was tackled to the ground by ICE and can be heard shouting that he was an American citizen and asking ICE if they were going to kill him.

ICE needs to be abolished IMMEDIATELY.

Federal immigration crackdown an 'invasion', says mayor

Frey describes the federal immigration crackdown as an "invasion" of masked agents who have a sense of impunity.

He appeals directly to President Trump, asking him to "be a leader".

"Put Minneapolis, put America first," he says, adding that the president should "take action now and remove these federal agents".

'How many more Americans need to die for this operation to end?' asks mayor

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey

Speaking next is Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who says: "How many more residents, how many more Americans need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end?"

He says this sort of operation is "not creating safety in our city".

Moments ago at this conference he urged residents to: “Stand with Minneapolis. Stand up for America. Recognize that your children will ask what side you were on. Your grandchildren will ask what you did to act to prevent this from happening again … What did you do to protect your nation?”

He added: “This is not what America is about. This is not a partisan issue. This is an American issue. This administration and everyone involved in this operation should be reflecting. They should be reflecting right now and asking: what exactly are you accomplishing?”
