AP: Man killed by federal officer was Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse

Family members say the man killed by a federal officer in Minneapolis on Saturday was an intensive care nurse at the Veterans Administration who cared deeply about people and was upset by President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown in his city.

Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, was an avid outdoorsman who loved getting in adventures with Joule, his beloved Catahoula Leopard dog who also recently died. He had participated in protests following the killing of Renee Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Law Enforcement officer earlier this month.

"He cared about people deeply and he was very upset with what was happening in Minneapolis and throughout the United States with ICE, as millions of other people are upset," said Michael Pretti, Alex's father. "He felt that doing the protesting was a way to express that, you know, his care for others."

Pretti was a U.S. citizen, born in Illinois. Like Good, court records showed he had no criminal record and his family said he had never had any interactions with law enforcement beyond a couple of traffic tickets.

You mean the ICE agents who left the scene not in proper condition for Minneapolis police to examine and secure?

jmo
No, surely there are other witnesses..How come we haven't heard from them?

AP has published a bystander video from a different angle. You would have to scroll to their post at 5:52am to watch it. (It is not far down in the article at the moment.)

All of the CBP/ICE people turned around and walked away immediately after the shooting. Just left Alex laying there with multiple gunshot wounds.

And why is it that ICE agents vacate a scene so quickly? Don't they need to preserve evidence?

This is the AP analysis of the bystander video that they published (which I linked earlier).

"The video shifts focus again and then shows three officers surrounding the man.

Soon at least seven officers surround the man. One is on the man’s back and another who appears to have a cannister in his hand strikes a blow to the man’s chest. Several officers try to bring the man’s arms behind his back as he appears to resist. As they pull his arms, his face is briefly visible on camera. The officer with the cannister strikes the man near his head several times.

A shot rings out, but with officers surrounding the man, it’s not clear from where the shot came. Multiple officers back off of the man after the shot. More shots are heard. Officers back away and the man lies motionless on the street."

Maybe to protect themselves from a mob...

Protests near site of shooting in pictures

As we reported earlier, city officials have declared protests near the site of the shooting an "unlawful assembly".

Pictures and videos from the demonstration show large crowds, smoke, and lines of enforcement.

It also appears that protesters are being arrested.

Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee Andrew Garbarino says he is in touch with the department following today's shooting in Minneapolis.

He says he "anticipates a full investigation" into "recent events", and "expects" both US Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been invited to testify.

"It is critical that Congress conduct its due diligence to ensure the safety of law enforcement officers and the communities they protect," Garbarino says.

"I take my oversight duties of the Department of Homeland Security seriously, and we expect recent events to be thoroughly discussed at our hearing."

Minnesota firearms owner group issues statement: "We are deeply concerned"

The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus has issued the following statement on the fatal shooting of a man who federal officials say was carrying a firearm:

"We are deeply concerned by this morning's reports that a federal law enforcement operation in Minneapolis resulted in the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by federal agents. According to local officials, the man was legally armed, a firearm was recovered at the scene, and he is believed to have been a lawful gun owner and permit to carry holder.

"Many critical facts remain unknown.

"We do not yet have an independent account of what initiated the encounter or what triggered the use of deadly force. Despite widespread speculation regarding intent, there has been no evidence produced indicating an intent to harm the officers. We are calling for a full and transparent investigation by both state and federal authorities.

"Every peaceable Minnesotan has the right to keep and bear arms—including while attending protests, acting as observers, or exercising their First Amendment rights. These rights do not disappear when someone is lawfully armed, and they must be respected and protected at all times."

Pretti attended nursing school at the University of Minnesota, where he was also a junior scientist beginning in 2012, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“He wanted to help people,” said Dimitri Drekonja, chief of infectious diseases at the VA hospital and professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota, who worked with Pretti at the hospital and on a research project. “He was a super nice, super helpful guy – looked after his patients. I’m just stunned.”

He described Pretti as an “outstanding” nurse and a hard worker, quick with a joke and an “infectious” spirit. “He was such a good dude,” Drekonja told the Guardian. “I just love working with him.”

And it looked like he was trying to help those other people there 😢

Minnesota BCA says, despite judge's warrant, feds deny them access to shooting scene

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension on Saturday afternoon said that, despite a judge's signed warrant, their agency has been denied access to the shooting scene by federal investigators.

BCA Superintendent Drew Evans updated on their efforts Saturday, saying Department of Homeland Security officers turned down the BCA.

"When our team arrived, they were blocked by federal agents," Evans said.

All I can say is I'm very, very deeply sad. There was no justification for this at all, this was not acceptable protocol by the agents based on what the videos and evidence show. Been so sad all day thinking about this man and his family. RIP.

The president of the Minnesota Organization of Registered Nurses (Mnorn) has made a post on Facebook about the fatal shooting of Veterans Association intensive care nurse Alex Pretti, who was killed by a federal agent this morning.

Cami Peterson-DeVries, the president of the professional association, said nurses were in mourning.

“Today, our nursing community is grieving. We have lost a fellow registered nurse to an act of violence connected to immigration enforcement. Regardless of where each of us stands on the issues surrounding this moment, the loss of a nurse, a caregiver, a colleague, a human being cuts us deeply.

This message is not about politics. It is about mourning a life taken too soon and honoring the calling we all share,” she wrote.

“As nurses, we understand loss in a way others may not understand. We know how quickly life can change, how fragile safety can feel, and how pain reaches far beyond one individual to families, coworkers, patients, and communities. When one nurse is lost, all of us feel it.” You can read the rest of the post here.

Do you know how we can watch (out of state). Thanks!
Here you go.

WORTH WATCHING.

Summary: the Feds kept Minnesota BCA, the entity that investigates such incidents, from the scene. So the BCA got a warrant from a judge to access the scene and were once again denied access by the Feds.
