MN - One dead after Minneapolis shooting involving immigration agents, US media report, January 24, 2026

Today (Monday) ..... A judge will hear arguments as state and local officials seek to halt the federal deployment of immigration agents in Minnesota. The case has taken on heightened urgency after federal agents killed Alex Jeffrey Pretti.

Lawyers for the state of Minnesota and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are seeking to temporarily halt the deployment of some 3,000 immigration agents, arguing that it has crossed the line into an unconstitutional and illegal occupation.

Unfortunately, I think that is the line that they are going to push. Even more unfortunately, the Sig P320 (I think it was) has gained a terrible reputation for firing unintentionally and Sig has issued a recall - which apparently didn't solve the problem. There are videos of them discharging even while holstered!

You can see exactly where this is going, unfortunately :(

That would still leave the question: why did agents (plural) repeatedly shoot?

Why did they keep shooting at a man on the ground?

Indeed. There are what appears to be confrontations between Pretti and and more than one ICE agent, and more than one ICE agent interacts with Pretti. Pretti appears to place himself close to ICE agents on at least two separate occasions. There is physical contact on two occasions. He is described as an "observer" with a camera.

What were the ICE agents doing there? ICE agents were not operating independently. Someone hired them to go there and do that job. That is where the problem lies, not with the individual agents. The protests should be with the person making the decisions, not the person carrying them out ... in my opinion.
Your second paragraph makes me think of excuses made for lower level Nazis in the 3rd Reich: they were just doing their job. Vomit. Not acceptable these days.

Your first paragraph and some other posts of yours make me think of rhetorical questions posed retroactively about ordinary Germans in 3rd Reich: Where were they?? Why didn't they see? How could they not have known??
In Minneapolis neighbours are out on the streets, observing, witnessing, filming, protecting by their very presence or at the very least trying. Yet, you seem to question this!! Would you prefer them to pretend nothing is happening? Or would you suggest they film but from a distance deemed suitable by the Border Patrol officers? The thing there is that BP will only consider the distance suitable if it's far enough away for the witness to not see anything.

That old ‘Fifth Avenue’ line keeps coming to mind. Minneapolis feels like ground zero, where they realize they can do this in public and get away with it. I don’t think he is interested in talking with MN officials in any meaningful way.

I guess that this is why the lawyers (for today's court hearing) are saying that it is an illegal occupation. There are (many) more ICE and CBP than police officers in Minneapolis.

A total of 3,000 ICE and Customs and Border Protection agents are now operating in the city, a force that is roughly five times the size of the Minneapolis Police Department, which has about 600 officers

also at your link

A top ICE official said Sunday that federal agents had carried out roughly 3,400 arrests in the area, though he did not say how many arrestees had criminal records.
MOO that would be illuminating information to have if one were trying to ascertain the effectiveness of this surge action.

Well, indeed!

They might make that claim but it won't work.

Border Patrol Union expresses 'full confidence' in agents using 'justifiable force'

The Border Patrol Union says it has "full confidence that when more facts are revealed, our agents and officers will be shown to have utilized justifiable force in eliminating the threat".

In a post on social media, it says "Border Patrol agents are trained extremely well to protect themselves, their fellow agents, and innocent third parties".

The statement adds that when a protester brings a weapon with them, "there are going to be severe consequences and repercussions".

There's another world out there in which the woman who was shoved and the man who was pepper sprayed for going to her assistance would be considered innocent third parties.

The world used to seem so much clearer, everything seems upside down and back to front lately.

And even if they don't make the claim about the gun, it still leaves the question:

Why did agents (plural) shoot multiple times at a man on the ground?

I am serious with that question and would like a serious (and truthful) answer from the officials or anyone supporting the officials' version of events.

IMO the threat was and remains the eyes of the nation upon what is happening in the state of MN and there is no way to neutralize that. The eyes of the world are on this administration and how it chooses to respond to the murder of Alex Pretti.

Because they are undertrained, trigger-happy, thugs who seem to have no fear of any repercussions.

The "officials" have already given their versions of the incident. They've lied;

He was brandishing a gun: LIE

He was a terrorist: LIE!

These comments are not my "opinion" they are facts and are easily provable from the videos.

The admin has already responded. They lied.

This comment is about this shooting. The federal response to the shooting of Alex Pretti was to lie about it.

It’s not really a swing state but it is a blue state that has voted against Trump in the last 3 elections. And Tim Walz the governor was running for VP against Trump in 2024. Those are some of the reasons I believe he has sent a very strong ICE presence to that state, especially because they actually have one of the lowest number of illegal immigrants nationwide. All MOO.

Here’s a chart that breaks down how many undocumented immigrants per state. Google says Minnesota has about 78,000-120,000 undocumented immigrants, which is 1.6% of their population.

Thank you this is great info for us to see

With the highest numbers of est unauthorized/illegal immigrant’s residing in states like California Florida and Texas I ask myself why was Minnesota a priority ? Why the large ICE presence in Minneapolis? And why the focus on violence we are not seeing elsewhere

Then I see Pam B’s list of items they want from Walz and if they get those items they will pull ICE out of Minnesota. So was this all ever about immigration ? Or was this whole thing just leverage to extract what they always wanted but are not legally entitled to?

When anybody starts operating outside the law they lose credibility to me. ICE has been out there operating effectively for years without this chaos and violence.
It appears to me they were told to push the envelope in Minnesota - some agents - maybe rogue/ took things toooo far. These agents should be investigated fairly and impartially.
Blind loyalty and supporting unlawfulness in any group, in my mind is not the way to proceed.
If we say the immigrants are here illegally/against the law so they need to go - it only stands to reason that if we have ICE agents also doing things that are illegal - they need to be held accountable too.

IMO whatever his plan is won't work. The majority of the public is adamantly against it. Picking MN for "proof of concept" is proving to be a very poor decision. They are not going to give up and the rest of the country is behind them 100%. Will help in material ways. People understand MN is ground zero.

I heard a quote the other day that basically sums this up - “You can’t break the law to enforce the law”
