MN - Philando Castile, 32, fatally shot by police officer, 6 July 2016 #2

IDK if there are "mansions" on Summit Ave. Regardless of size, design, & fair market value of homes in that block and that area, whether $25,000, $250,000 or $2.5 mil, residents may not welcome the disruption to their block & neighborhood. How many ppl would?

Anybody wanna park car a block or two away, then drag groceries back home? How about shepherding a babe in arms, a toddler, & a kindergartner to and from car & home in this heat? Or leave car on street, subject to vandalism or theft of. car, not protected in garage, not visible from home? Or usher grade schoolers back & forth thru this drill? Perhaps physical violence to all in neighborhood? If this is what residents must do, 'first world problems,' maybe, but doubtful this kind of assembly help secure sympathy or converts to the protesters' side. JM2cts.

Anyone know if protest leaders obtained whatever permit(or what-ev?) for this ongoing "occupation?"

Take a look on google or on zillow on houses on Summit Avenue. I seriously doubt prooerty vslues will be affected. They weren't when Jesse Ventura's son had wild parties there.

Yeah, residents *are* blocked from driving to their homes. And Summit as a through-street is also blocked. Apparently no one has any rights except protesters and occupiers. And apparently they can do whatever they please with no consequences at all.

Is Gov. Dayton even currently staying at the mansion?? He doesn't live there full time, as I've read. I suppose that doesn't matter. The Governor's Mansion is the symbolic goal for these protesters. Whether or not the Governor is *actually* there doesn't matter. Which is why they should take their protest to the public plaza areas around the Capitol grounds, IMO. Quit blockading private property, roads, and highways, and maybe more would be sympathetic to their cause. With this kind of disruptive and lawless behavior, they just anger an awful lot of people, and their message is completely lost, IMO. They are a problem, not a solution.

The protesters are defining the protest. They are not interested in others defining the protest.

Well, it appears we agree about their methods-- the protesters are quite selfish, and not interested in respectful means to express their emotions, or constructively solve disputes.

And IMO, that means their collective behavior is a problem to be solved, rather than a message or plea to anyone. Their behavior is more akin to adolescent revenge, than constructive adult problem solving.

Their protest/ occupation, while it makes them feel "better" or "powerful" for a short time, is ultimately pointless. They are not empowered. They don't gain respect for their message; they only lose the respect that they actually had until they chose to act like this. IMO. Now those in power see them as immature and childish. And criminal. IMO.

My friend's grandson goes to a lot of these protests and 'camps out' there. It is his way of living. He told her it is a great way to meet friends, get donations of food, water and clothing , meet new friends and hang out for weeks at a time, at their 'encampments.' It is like a big party atmosphere. He has a FB page that he uses for donations for his cell, that he posts twitter pix and short videos from. He travels from shooting go shooting and has since Ferguson.

The street is blocked by the police, not the protesters. The residents should take that matter up with the police. If the police cars are removed from the street, then there should be nothing stopping the resident’s from getting home. It’s the police causing the problem, not the protesters.

If the officers were removed from the street, the resident's would still be blocked from getting home. The marchers would likely be climbing on their car hoods and standing in front of the cars, letting some pass by and surrounding others and chanting and cussing at them. We have seen that quite a bit, which is why the cops set up their cars in response.

LOL, Too funny that now it's the people that work hard and have a nice home that are the problem. I wonder if the protestors have jobs that they are not going to?

Arrests are Continuing at Protest Outside Governor's Residence in St. Paul

St. Paul police are arresting protesters and escorting them one at a time to a Metro Transit bus outside the Governor's Residence on Summit Avenue.

Several protesters were arrested earlier Tuesday after police cleared demonstrations from the street.

Shortly before 11 a.m., something broke out and officers arrested an unknown number of protesters.

An eloquent article written for msm by Dennis J. Flaherty, executive director of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association. (To provide some balance to the ongoing demonization of police officers.)

IMO, this case as it proceeds one-sided and erratically in the public and the media is a re-run of the Jamar Clark case. As in the Jamar Clark case, we will get to the real truth, but it will take months and months before the "other side of the story" comes out. And as we all know, truth is the first casualty of war.

All that says, is that it is common for the government to violate or restrict people’s First Amendment rights. The government and especially police love to violate people’s Constitutional rights. We know that. That’s what this is all about. The Founding Fathers could have out lined all kinds of restrictions, but they didn’t. For them rights were absolute, "shall make no law respecting" "or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”. Now after 240 years of watering down the Constitution, people have to get permission from the Government to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Agreeing that A#1 & interp has changed in past 240 yrs. Not here to debate Right of Assembly, whether it is 'absolute' as ^, or whether current SCotUS interp, PotUS & DOJ enforcement policies, or fed or state laws now in force, are good, bad, or indifferent.

The law (about assembly now) is what it is (now), cumulatively/collectively thru federal & states' executive, legislative & judicial branches.

How/why do protestors/demonstrators/occupiers think their unlawful actions in blockading residential or neighborhoods, streets, public highways - that is, to the extent the actions are unlawful - will help them in achieving their purported objective, reducing/preventing LEOs from using firearms, injuring or killing PoCs?

Have ppl protesting/demonstrating/occupying contacted/tried to contact their local PD & LE officials, city & county officials, st reps, st sen's, fed congressperson, fed sen's? Not by melodramatic entrances of ppl shoving their way into an office, w livestream, but by civilized communications requesting meeting at scheduled times? Has anyone prevented them from trying to make changes from within our system of exec, legis, & judicial branches? IDK.

I think it would be neat to see them go into a needy urban community and mentor kids in Mr. Castile's name. Whatever transportation they are using to get to the protest sites, perhaps they could offer to transport children to parks/playgrounds or unemployed individuals to job interviews or community services. I think that would be a great way to honor Mr. Castile's memory. :)

Fwiw and imo - disingenuous at best.

Your link refers to something at 1:30 am - fwiw this info is as questionable as your previous into that the gf was arguing with LE and refusing to leave the vehicle - the video shows what is so untrue. Wtf? Trouble is better than peace?

I'm not K_Z or trying to speak on her behalf. I do not follow but am trying to understand this:
"Your link refers to something at 1:30 am - fwiw this info is as questionable..."

Why is K_Z's link referring to events at 1:30 am questionable? Is pix photoshopped? Does pix depict events in another city? Events from years ago? How is it questionable? Is it this, which may or may not be a tech glitch? Tweet caption: "1:30 am protestors sit in the middle of Summit Ave watching a movie" Elsewhere on tweet, time-stamp = 11:31 PM - 24 Jul 2016.

Can anyone enlighten me? Thx in adv.

Maybe if PC had responded like this guy instead of digging in his pockets while armed...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sport...-player-pokemon-go-police-20160724-story.html

Just like PC, this guy fit the description of a recent criminal...so should the answer be that police not stop those who resemble criminals?

PC was asked to produce ID - then shot while trying to retrieve his ID. While trying to retrieve his ID, just before he was shot, he and or his gf tried to explain he had a permit to carry the weapon he had on him. He was then shot 4 times - making sure he was dead.

This is the same as the story linked? Not getting that just yet. The young man in the linked story tried to explain he had a permit to carry? The young man tried to retrieve his own ID? According to the story it was retrieved for him.

Not getting the connection - assuming there is one. All stops by LE are the same?

The similarity being that both individuals were possible suspects in a crime. One stayed still and alive while the other moved when it would clearly have been wiser to have remained still while advising cop of his weapon. Not squirming around while his girlfriend advises cop of weapon (assuming that is really what happened). But hey, its ALL about race and nothing more...in both cases...

What a very nice sensible young man.

Excerpt:

Ekakitie urged people to be aware of their surroundings and to "unlearn some of the prejudiced that we have learned about each other."

"I would like the thank the Iowa City Police department for handling a sensitive situation very professionally. I would also urge people to be more aware of their surroundings because clearly I wasn't. Lastly, I would urge us all to at least to attempt to unlearn some of the prejudices that we have learned about each other and now plague our minds and our society. I am convinced that in the same way that we learned these prejudices, we can also unlearn them."

Stay on topic in this thread.

This thread is dedicated to discussing the Philando Castile case. It is not about the history of protesters, the Constitution, Ace Ventura at the Governor's Mansion, whether protesters are independently wealthy, who's going to pay for and clean up the trash, etc.

Thank You

Oh, and cut the snark !!
