The population of Pine River in 2000 was 928, of which 96.77% were white; 0.75% were black (roughly 7). Surely, if the police suspected a black person based on the purchase of malt liquor and Kools, they talked to those 7 people. (Other minority groups had similar numbers.)

The per capita income in 2000 was less than $15,000, so possibly almost everyone was sort of poorish. An interesting demographic from the article linked above is that there were 100 women for every 71 men, over the age of 18.
Were they right off the interstate?

'Officers theorized the perpetrator took Rachel from the back alley while she was disposing of garbage, just before she planned to head home.
Jessica told police her mother usually followed a when closing down the business'
''Although the store was equipped with security cameras, they were not recording that night.''

''Abraham said. "I had a hell of a time convincing them that when you dump a body in a ditch, you're dumping it there to be found. He wanted the body found, or they wanted the body found.''

She once wrote a piece for Coventry Village News, a newsletter for a Cleveland Heights neighborhood, addressing women's safety in the wake of two stranger rapes. In hindsight, her words have taken on an eerie quality.''

''Among those investigated were people considered suspects in another unsolved murder case in the Pine River area. In 1984, Clarence and Marge Paulson, a father and daughter, disappeared from their home. Six years later, a worker dismantling a 19th-century farmhouse in rural Pine River discovered their skeletal remains.''

'PINE RIVER, Minn. — State authorities are looking for any new information that might lead to the killer of Rachel Anthony, a woman abducted from her workplace in north-central Minnesota a quarter-century ago.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, as well as the Cass County Sheriff's Office, put out a statement just days before the 25th anniversary of Anthony's Feb. 27 disappearance from Ultimate Liquors in Pine River. The BCA is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the suspect's arrest and conviction.'

'Police said they've not been able to identify the person who made the purchase — a bottle of Mickey's Malt Liquor and Kool cigarettes — and hope someone with information might now come forward.
“We are hopeful with highlighting the anniversary of Rachel’s disappearance that someone has information, even if it's the smallest detail, will come forward and share that information with law enforcement,” Cass County Sheriff Bryan Welk said. “The Cass County Sheriff’s Office and BCA are committed to following up on all leads and hope that one will bring us to the successful outcome of this tragic case.”
