I feel sorry for the oldest daughter.
She would remember the earlier baby being found in the basement (or heard talk about it). It would have been a significant event because her mother went away for awhile. Also when custody of Kirstin's other child was given to the natural father, she would have lost the sibling she'd been raised with.
The older daughter couldn't give the baby a bottle when she was locked out of the room. It doesn't sound as if the mother would let anyone touch the baby to help either.
I can understand why the 14 year old didn't know what to do. I am sure her mother was telling her not to let anyone in the house. Who would let anyone in with it being so filthy? I've seen shows and documentaries about people whose "dirty secret" is the filthiness of their homes. I think they do whatever they have to do to keep people from finding out.
That little girl had already had her mother "sent away" before and had a sibling removed from her home. I don't blame her for being afraid of alerting an adult or authority. My understanding is that she WAS the one to call 911 in the end. I think she had to defy her mother to do it.
I don't think that child should be criticized.
She must have been VERY scared for Alexsis to have called outsiders for help.
