MO - Ashley Woods for attempted murder of newborn, Kansas City, 2007

Maybe she did - we don't know all of what happened. We don't know if she was in shock or for how long or when she came to or anything....

Seriously, do you think if she had even tried to revive the baby he would still be in the toilet? :waitasec:

I would really like to try to give her the benefit of the doubt...it is really hard. The only thing I can think of is that she really thought of it as having a miscarriage (once she realized it was a baby) and that there was nothing else she could do about it.

Unfortunately, the media does not help. I about come out of my skin every time some TV drama or newscast refers to a pregnancy loss in the 7-9th month as a "miscarriage."

On the flip side, I have known moms who have miscarried as early as 7 weeks who have rescued the baby from the toilet and brought it to the doctor expecting testing to be done. Most doctors act like you brought them an unwanted stool sample. The disregard for these babies is horrific.

What do we expect with the way society treats unborn babies? Eventually it rubs off on the next generation.

Go ahead and flame me now. I'm ready.

Not at all.. I was kind of thinking she may have thought it was a miscarriage as well.
If she did not know she was pregnant then she would have no idea how far along she was and no idea what a fetus would or should look like at a given stage.

I've no idea - she might have thought she'd had a miscarriage.

I'm just pointing out that I personally can envision scenarios where this young woman did not purposely try to flush her living child. I'll reserve judgment until more facts are in.

Angelmom, I hope no one flames you for having an opinion. ITA about the disregard for miscarriages. From personal experience, I was told there was nothing they could, to go to the store and stock up on tylenol and pads-that was it.

Does the wording indicate that she tried to flush the baby several times or that she told the paramedics several times that she flushed the baby?

Exact quote from article

Lockhart said the woman was 32-weeks pregnant when she gave birth in the restroom. She allegedly told paramedics that she tried to flush the baby down the toilet several times, he said.

I just don't understand when someone says "I didn't know I was pregnant". With both my children, I was as big as a fricking house. My ds was born at approx 33 weeks, and I was HUGE. How can they not know?

I am not buying this "shock" thing as a reason to try to kill her baby. If she was smart enough to hold a job even at McDonald's...she was smart enough to know she was having/had a baby. Trying to flush it was the easiest way out, IMO.

Fortunately, there's no law regarding stupidity - else we'd all be in jail.

I feel the same way, but I've seen and read so many stories of women being unaware that I've come to believe some people really don't know!

When Mom got frustrated as a single Mom raising my brother and I, she would sometimes exclaim "I'm going to flush you down the toilet!"

...it used to be funny.

I was in the "big as a house" category, but I have known 2 women who got to about 20 weeks without knowing they were pg. Both had had children before!!!

One was very overweight, so it wasn't as shocking. She went to the doctor for stomach pains she was having. She actually was afraid he was going to tell her she had some kind of cancer. Well, something was growing in there alright...but much happier news! I couldn't believe she didn't know. She already had 2 kids, so you'd think it would be vaguely familiar.

The other one, though, was not overweight at all. She had put on about 10lbs and wasn't feeling great, but everyone chalked it up to being a single mom, planning her wedding, and super busy. She had never been regular in her life, and she and her finacee were using BC. Finally her mom bugged her to go to the doctor about the fatigue. Surprise! She was more than halfway to delivery.

I guess a 20 yo who isn't getting good medical care and doesn't know much about the facts of life other than what her friends have told her could miss it.

Maybe she was freaked out, and maybe she didn't know she was pregnant....but, if I was at work, and I had stomach cramps, and I sat down and a huge (Fill in the blank) came out of me, I would be screaming for someone to come and help me...(no matter what I thought it was). The only reason she got busted was because her co-workers came to check on her for taking so long. I'm sure, given enough time, that baby would have been wrapped in Toilet paper, and sneaked out to the dumpster, (after she realized it wouldn't go down the toilet). She is a freak.

If I didn't know it was a baby, I'd be reeeeal quiet so's not to be embarassed. If I did know it was a baby, I'd be scared to death it would drown and I'd make sure it wasn't in the toilet.

Have you ever had a baby? A lot of stuff comes out of you besides the baby, including large amounts of blood. If I had a baby, and didn't know I was pregnant, I'd surely think I was hemorrhaging and on the verge of death. The placenta alone looks like a huge tumor. I be screaming for someone to call 911. She knew what she was doing.

Emergency C-section. All I saw was lots of colors of pain - then nothing.

The only situation I've been in where I thought I was on the verge of death, I just lay there and wondered who was going to put my horse away. My mind wasn't on anything rational. I couldn't breathe right, or talk at all, or move at all - but I was worried about my horse.

(Later, I wanted to kill my horse.)

OMG. I can't believe a woman can do this!

Poor sweet baby boy! I hope what life has in store for him is an improvement from his birth date.

What kind of woman could possibly do such a thing?

I don't buy " the I didn't know " I was pregnant line either! No way!

I graciously pray that this baby boy is ok... as he wasn't breathing when help arrived. I wonder for how long he was without oxygen?

Prayers for this innocent little baby.:blowkiss:
