Crystal was driving a friend home when her low fuel light came on but she would not pull over and get gas. She was famous for letting her car run out of gas and used AAA often. She dropped her friend off and pulled away. Crystal never made it home. Her mother found her car the next day along the side of the road with its hazard lights on.
A truck driver claimed he saw a girl matching Crystal's description along the interstate waving down traffic. He saw a car pull up behind hers so he didn't pull over to help.

LE raided John Williams house later in 1997 and found some of Crystal's belongings - her clothes, paycheck stub, ID. Apparently there was damage to the clothing indicating a struggle. Williams claimed he struck and killed her on accident and disposed of her body. LE learned Williams had had his windsheild fixed the day after Crystals disappearence and the damage was consistent with someone kicking it from the inside. LE believed Williams had pulled over to assist Crystal, abducted her and killed her. He was a convicted sex offender and was getting ready to be tried in another rape and murder. He committed suicide in his cell.
He never disclosed what he did with Crystal or her body. Her case remains unsolved.

  Details of Disappearance
  Kipper drove to St. Joseph, Missouri from her family's residence in Kansas City to pick up a friend during the evening of February 24, 1997. They went ice skating together.
  
  The low-fuel warning light in Kipper's red 1989 Ford Probe LX activated as she was driving her friend back to St. Joseph at approximately 1:00 a.m. She refused to stop for a gas fill-up, saying that her car always had good gas mileage and she could return to Kansas City without topping the tank.
  
  Kipper's family said that she used her AAA Auto Club membership several times prior to February 1997 after allowing her car to run out of fuel while driving.
  
  Kipper dropped her friend off in St. Joseph at approximately 2:00 a.m. and promised to call him by 3:00 a.m. to announce her arrival home. Her friend fell asleep while waiting for her call.
  
  Kipper's car apparently ran out of fuel shortly after 2:30 a.m. as she drove down Interstate 29 north of the Kansas City International Airport. A truck driver observed a dark-haired Caucasian female flagging down traffic with a concerned look on her face by the southbound shoulder of the highway at approximately 2:34 a.m.
  
  The woman fit Kipper's description. The witness told investigators that he saw another vehicle backing up on the exit ramp towards the woman's car as he passed. Kipper has never been seen again.
  
  Kipper's mother discovered her daughter's Ford Probe later in the morning on Interstate 29. The hazard lights were on and the vehicle's battery was low. There was no sign of Kipper at the scene.
  
  Authorities searched the Kansas City, Missouri residence of John E. Williams later in 1997 when he was implicated in the abduction and sexual assault of another woman. Investigators discovered Kipper's identification cards, paycheck stub, car keys, mock turtleneck and jeans inside Williams's home.
  
  DNA tests confirmed that the clothing belonged to Kipper and investigators believed the damage to the clothing was consistent with a homicide. Williams was questioned about Kipper's case and claimed he accidentally struck and killed her with his vehicle on the night of February 24 on Interstate 29.
  
  Williams was a convicted sex offender and told authorities he was afraid of becoming implicated in the crime, so he placed Kipper's body in his car and disposed of her remains. He initially refused to divulge her burial location, but eventually led investigators to the Platte City area. Nothing was discovered during an extensive search.
  
  Authorities learned that Williams had his car's windshield repaired the day after Kipper vanished. They believed it was damaged by someone kicking it during a struggle.
  
  Williams denied the statement and also denied intentionally killing Kipper. Several witnesses provided tips which placed Kipper's body in the woods of Platte County, but no evidence was located to confirm the reports.
  
  Williams was imprisoned for the rape and abduction of the other Missouri woman and was about to be charged with Kipper's homicide when he committed suicide in his cell in April 1999. He died without revealing the location of Kipper's remains. After his death, two of his cellmates corroborated his previous statements, saying he had told them he had killed Kipper and disposed of her body.
  
  Kipper had been an exotic dancer in the Kansas City area in 1996, but had decided to leave the industry at the time of her disappearance and had secured employment elsewhere. Her case remains unsolved.

I think that Williams is clearly guilty, I imagine that being convicted and having run over Cristal, he got scared...another charge to spend life in jail, maybe if it was unintentional he would be standing on the road asking for a ride so as not to be left alone without fuel on the road and then he disposed of the body... he could have taken her to a hospital in a last case... hopefully one day his body will be found and give peace to his family

Circumstances of Disappearance​

On February 23, 1997, Crystal drove to St. Joseph and picked up a few friends and headed to Crown Center, where they stayed until around midnight. At around 2:00 a.m., after she dropped her friends back at their homes, Crystal started back toward Kansas City. The low-fuel warning on Crystal's maroon Ford Probe had lit up on the way back to St. Joseph but she refused her friend's offer to buy gas, stating her car got good gas mileage.

Crystal was last seen at around 2:34 a.m. on the southbound shoulder of I-29 and Hwy 371 by a truck driver. The truck driver saw Crystal's car with its flashers on and Crystal flagging traffic and another car backing up on the on ramp toward Crystal.

The next morning, Crystal's mom found her abandoned car at that same location, its battery dying and hazard lights blinking. The car was locked and out of gas.

On July 5, 1997, Angela Amos was kidnapped, tortured, and raped over a 10-day period before she escaped. When police went to arrest John Williams for Angela's kidnapping they discovered Crystal's ID cards, a paycheck stub, jewelry, car keys, articles of clothing, and a missing person flier of Crystal. They also found pornographic videos he had spliced with television news reports of Crystal's disappearance.

According to Williams, he was driving along I-29 when something struck his windshield. When he returned, he found Crystal's body and disposed of it.

Williams had his car windshield replaced the day after Crystal's disappearance. Police believe the damage was caused by someone kicking it during a struggle and not someone having been struck by a car. Furthermore the condition of Crystal's clothes found in Williams' possession were consistent with a homicide.

On April 24, 1999, Williams hung himself in his jail cell. He left no suicide note. Williams is the only suspect in Crystal's disappearance and presumed murder. Despite extensive searches in Platte County and near where her car was found, Crystal's body has yet to be found.
