Skeletal remains were found inside a vehicle that was parked in the garage of a home on Fox Run Road, southwest of Elsberry, Lincoln County Sheriff Rick Harrell said. He said thieves repeatedly walked past the remains to steal from the home over a period of months.

"Unfortunately, oftentimes in law enforcement, you come across cases that shock your conscience," said Harrell.

According to Harrell, the investigation started with a traffic stop of a woman in Elsberry, which led to the recovery of methamphetamine and the discovery that the pickup being driven was stolen. He said, when investigators went to the home of the vehicle owner, they found skeletal remains, a ransacked home, and many items stolen.

"Certainly it seems like a group of criminal opportunists when they found out about this body, they had just ransacked the residence and taken many items. We've recovered stolen vehicles, stolen firearms, and tens of thousands of dollars in other related items," said Harrell.

Sheriff Harrell said the body may have been in the car since last summer and that the thieves were aware of it as they walked past it for months to steal from the home. Neighbors said they were shocked by the greed and callousness of the thieves.

Harrell said investigators have made a tentative identification but the name won't be released until a DNA test can confirm it. At this point, there's a lack of any evidence to indicate foul place was involved in the death.

A cause of death hasn't been able to be determined, but Harrell said detectives are tracing the person's financial transactions to determine a time frame for when they possibly died.

The sheriff said detectives are working with the Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney's office to bring charges against more than two dozen suspects. But there could be more, so the sheriff's office is asking anyone who knows something about this crime to call 636-528-8546, extension 3247, to speak with a detective.
Bizarre crime could lead to dozens of arrests

Thieves walked past a man’s body for months to steal from his property in eastern Missouri, authorities said.

Authorities found the body of a 60-year-old man in mid-December in a detached garage in rural Lincoln County, Sheriff Rick Harrell said. Officials believe they know who the man was but have not released his name.

“At least six people walked by the body,” Harrell said. “Everything on the property was up for grabs because the person was deceased, so they started cleaning him out.”

The thefts went on for months, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Wow! So a woman was driving a stolen pickup truck that was registered to a man who was presumably dead in another vehicle located in his garage? And at least 6 others walked past his remains to loot his belongings? The gall of some folks. *smh*

Snipped
The man was not reported missing because he was estranged from his family, who lived in other states. He also had two homes in Lincoln County, so neighbors were not surprised by his absence. Both homes were looted, Harrell said.

Lincoln County Prosecutor Michael Wood said, “The home was stripped. They took everything.”

Assistant prosecutor John Krehmeyer added, “This is a weird one because they used the home as their personal ATM. It’s like the Oklahoma land grab.”
Bell said as many as 40 people may have been involved in the thefts and receiving stolen property, drawing in more criminals in a ripple effect. Police are trying to strengthen their case before seeking charges sometime early in 2022.

Police have been visiting pawn shops and reviewing videos from banks to see who has been cashing checks. They have conducted search warrants at storage units and watched the spending habits of potential suspects. So far in the 12-month investigation, only one man has been charged, for being a felon in possession of one of the stolen handguns.

In an effort to positively identify the remains, police pulled court files from a 20-year-old probate case to track down the homeowner’s estranged brother in Texas. Police convinced him to swab the inside of his cheek for DNA comparisons.

That test allowed investigators to confirm the identity of the remains in the garage as 60-year-old Curtis Morrow, a lifelong Lincoln County resident who was a recluse.
