So the police don't want any news reports with actual footage of what's going on. No conflicting stories that way.

Riots generally do not go beyond 3 nights. After 3 days the rioters get "tired" and the authorities/business owners have a plan.

While some business owners are likely ruined and can't reopen (shops in some high crime areas cannot buy insurance, so if they get looted/burned out the owner loses everything which is why some business owners risk their own lives and defend their businesses with deadly force) some business owners are doing well.

Apparently gun sales are way up in that area with stores reporting their sales have quadrupled (gun and ammo sales have been slow in 2014 since most gun owners bought a lot last year, perhaps these are primarily new buyers).

Head for the hills, the duck faced selfie posting 🤬🤬🤬🤬 is here. It's a shame Anonymous isn't just one solid crew, every time i see something from them I have to wonder how well it's coordinated. So now, the officer is getting a few months of paid vacation while his lawyers offer fact's on what happened before even going on the record with witnesses.

I have a feeling this one will eventually cool down, but the trial is going to be something much, much worse.

How many of the rioters have applied for jobs in the police department? Has there been an unequal hiring percentage when it comes to blacks and whites?
What are the concerns of the rioters?
How many of the rioters have gone to community meetings, city meetings, etc and voiced concerns?
How many of the rioters went to the protest and stood in peace with the family?

A police officer shot an unarmed man. There were witnesses. An investigation has been started.

What is the purpose of the riots?

I'd suggest there's more to it than that.

Please explain how burning people's cars, looting, burning down businesses etc.. is something other than entertainment or a chance to steal. Some of us just don't get the deeper meaning and justification that makes the perpetrators folks to be sympathized with.

The purpose of the riots is to act they way they want to act anyway, but now feel they have license. Why else would they attack a shoe store in South St. Louis? That's nowhere near where this happened and no stores of any kind played any role in this, they just have stuff to steal. Rioters and protesters are not the same thing in my mind.

I can't listen to any of the local news stations online because the connection keeps cutting out. I have to listen to a normal radio, gasp! I guess lots of people who don't normally tune in are listening now. It would be nice if the St. Louis area could get in the news for something other than tornadoes, crime, or the World Series. Other stuff does go on here! But the rest of the world would never know!

It's natural to want to get the media involved when you think an injustice has been done, but the effect the media attention has on your community is really scary! It's very unsettling when the media attention is on your city. Yes it's good to focus attention to make sure justice is done. The media also whips people up into crazy behavior. The St. Louis area is weird because it's one metro area (eighth largest in the US) divided into hundreds of small cities. So the media referring to Ferguson as a small town is not accurate. It's a small city which is an inner ring suburb of a city that is the center of a very large metro area. The media is putting everyone in this metro area in danger and on the news it's reported that gun sales are way up and I understand why, I may get one myself. I have an art show in the city tomorrow night. I'm considering leaving before it gets dark even though it's supposed to last until 1 am, or not going at all, I really don't feel like getting shot or having my Jeep torched. On the one hand, I'm a big believer in business as usual, on the other hand is it worth it? This art show is supposed to help revitalize the city, I understand those who say why bother? Whatever hard work you do toward this goal will just be undone. When this is going on in your own city it really changes how you think about things.

It doesn't. It's been said those who looted, came from other counties to cause havoc..

Ferguson community are doing peaceful protests, even as the Chief of police told them they couldn't. This is a right to peacefully assemble...and show distain for the government or a cause..

Mike Browns family, his attorney are calling for peace....and they have been peacefully protesting until that mob came to cause destruction.

Ferguson is nearly 70% black. The force is 6% black (3 black officers, 1 male 2 female).
It is hard to explain, but there has been growing tension between the community and the various police departments in north county. I have personal knowledge of some of the things that are relatively routine up there that make me sick frankly. A friend's husband is a detective in a neighboring city and has told me in the past of some things they do and well suffice it to say that while I have completely cut ties from my friend, I do have only very rare contact now. I'm hesitant to relate the stories because they're not in MSM or anything, but what your thinking is probably close to accurate. One example from last night, a small group were in their back yard of their own house as a line of cops were coming up the street military style. They remained in their back yard demonstrating with their hands up in the air. Certainly some language too, but were no threat to anyone and the next thing you know, you actually see the tear gas being fired right at the camera in the backyard. There is video of that and I'll see if I can find it. Now, who knows what these guys (some looked to be like 10-14 year old kids too) were doing 30 minutes beforehand, but at the time they didn't appear to be doing anything that warranted firing upon them in their own backyard. That type of oppression in their eyes by the police force has built up a lot of anger/resentment for a long time that is boiling over now.
The rioters, for the most part, are not at the peaceful demonstrations. In fact, there were plenty of pictures of the peaceful portion with no police presence yesterday. A good guy to follow on twitter is Antonio French. He's an alderman from St. Louis City who has been present and part of the peaceful demonstrations.

I don't think anything justifies it. Those are all criminal acts and they deserve to be arrested. But to say it is just for entertainment and free stuff is oversimplifying what are probably very complicated issues. I don't think there should be any sympathizing for those who are actually burning stuff and looting. There is no justifying. I just think there is a bigger picture that needs to be addressed so there isn't looting and burning stuff in the future. What has caused so many people to sink to the level of doing those things? Probably a topic that could use a thread of it's own and to a large degree are answers that are above my pay grade.

Crime happens in STL every night. Not all of it is related to the riots. My brother actually lives 2 minutes walking distance from that plaza and has related more than 1 occasion of gunshots or looting in that plaza. They may have done that in the name of Brown, but it's certainly not the rioters migrating there and doing that. Those were common criminals doing what criminals do every day in St. Louis unfortunately. I would agree though that rioters and the protestors are not the same. They are 2 very distinct crowds of people.

It is a great city overall.

It's natural to want to get the media involved when you think an injustice has been done, but the effect the media attention has on your community is really scary! It's very unsettling when the media attention is on your city. Yes it's good to focus attention to make sure justice is done. The media also whips people up into crazy behavior. I think that the way the St. Louis area is set up has also led to a lot of people outside of St. Louis reporting all crimes as if they're related to Ferguson. There are shootings any given day in different parts of town and some media person listening to a scanner hears a shooting on Kingshighway and automatically assumes it's related when in reality it was another shooting that was going to happen regardless of Ferguson unfortunately.
