I think it's a critical factor. If the case ever goes to trial, I don't doubt we'll hear it explained more.
I know cops are taught these things, but I haven't heard or read about it anywhere but here in relation to this case.

I have seen some discussion in the media as well. Showing videos with police being confronted with several situations and how QUICK a person can be, jumping on a police officer in two seconds when they are like 20 or 30 feet away. The videos also demonstrated how unpredictable people can be! A supposedly harmless traffic stop can end up very dangerous for the police officer.
It was also mentioned a few times in the media (CNN and Fox) that it takes approx. 2 to 2 1/2 seconds for a police officer to think and react (pulling gun out of holster) to a situation. It only takes a perp approx. 2 to 3 seconds to run 35 feet (to jump a police officer). I hope I got this right as I'm posting from memory.
