Check this out:

In fact, speaking of Shahid, I'd seen people pointing him out here and other places. He's clearly been very involved in this.

“We’re going to tie it down, lock it down,” Anthony Shahid, one of the lead organizers of the rally, told supporters from the stage at a park. The following week, if the coalition’s demands were not met, including that Officer Wilson be fired and arrested on charges of murder, another four-minute traffic shutdown would occur on two days instead of just one, he said.

Sounds like they are trying to hold the city hostage to get their demands met.

I think unlawfully blocking traffic on an interstate is dangerous and probably a crime. IMO

apologies if this was all ready posted

Ferguson proposes municipal court reforms, adding police review board

FERGUSON • The Ferguson City Council announced plans Monday to make changes designed to reduce court fine revenue, reform court procedures and start a Citizen Review Board that will help keep an eye on and guide the police department.

“The overall goal of these changes is to improve trust within the community and increase transparency, particularly within Ferguson’s courts and police department,” Councilman Mark Byrne said in a statement.

“We want to demonstrate to residents that we take their concerns extremely seriously. That’s why we’re initiating new changes within our local police force and in our courts.”

While the city is making these changes, officials will hold ward meetings to get public input.

Some of the proposals are on the agenda for the City Council meeting at 7 tonight at Greater Grace Church, 3690 Pershall Road.

Officials said they hope this change will encourage the municipal judge and prosecutor to use alternative sentencing methods, like community service, as punishment.

Another proposed ordinance would repeal the separate offense of “failure to appear” in municipal court. Defendants who don’t show up would no longer face a new fine.

Another ordinance would abolish the $25 administrative fee that goes along with towing costs; the city will now pay for that.

Another would take away a $50 warrant recall fee and a $15 notification fee that goes along with a case where a defendant has failed to appear.

So now, a failure to appear has no consequence? Why would anyone appear for a court date then?

So does this mean that the protestors that are angry about the court system are going to stop the civil unrest? Oh wait a a minute...tyhey are closing down the freeway tomorrow...because he was in sty street for 4 hours...because the livery company didnt have bullet proof vests and couldn't pick him up...the parents knew that...but now the protests are highlighting the 4 hours, as if it was the FPDs fault...

Shahid was there moments after the shooting, and IMO, was the one who shaped the entire narrative.

I agree. Apparently accusing police without information and encouraging law-breaking and riots are his thing.

He was also driving the city cops crazy, showing up when they were trying to make an arrest and automatically haranguing the officers for unfairness. It's said that on at least one occasion, he goaded onlookers to take the suspect back from the police, nearly starting a neighborhood riot.

And he's connected to Gray, the family's attorney, and to Bosley, Dorian's attorney. Given how quickly Shahid arrived on scene and was seen with the family and Piaget, Tiffany, & Dorian, I think it's likely that he connected them with their lawyers.

He was joined by an old cohort, attorney Anthony D. Gray, who, as SUFYR's advisor, called for a full-scale investigation into alleged violations of SUFYR members' rights.

Shahid found inspiration in the political platform and easygoing style of Freeman Bosley Jr. Back in the '80s, as Shahid's religious convictions deepened, he'd decided to start the Tauheed Youth Group to work with young black men in the city's roughest neighborhoods. Bosley had come to some of their meetings. When he campaigned for mayor, Shahid provided extra security, and after Bosley won the election in 1993, Shahid went to work for the city, helping defuse gang problems in parks and recreation centers.

Some say he's drumming the history of racist oppression into their heads, convincing them that white people are their enemy.

^^Regarding that, he called one of the police chiefs "Iblis" meaning devil on his twitter.

Some youth workers say Shahid, extreme by temperament, teaches extreme positions to the kids who hero-worship him.

Nebbitt calls Shahid "a pan-African black nationalist separatist," meaning that "he sees all people from the black diaspora as part of one struggle. He believes in establishing a black nation within this country. And he's separatist, in the way I hear even educated middle-class people in the suburbs speak of it, saying that desegregation might have damaged the black community and it's time to go back to the inner city and revitalize it."

"I think he generally has a view where he just doesn't like white people. There's a disdain there."

Much more about his mosque and controversy in this long article. No wonder this blew up without facts quickly.

So who does "they" include? All protesters? All Ferguson residents? All people that side with the Brown family? If we're ok lumping everyone together based on the actions of the few, is it ok to do the same with cops because of the actions of the extremely small percentage that act out of line?

BBM

You've made a very good point, Reedus.

I think it's important to distinguish the peaceful, law-abiding protesters from the law-breakers, the looters, and the thugs who only came to Ferguson to wreak mayhem and act out violently.

Lumping all the Ferguson residents and all the protesters in with the violent rioters by referring to all of them as "they" is just as inaccurate as lumping all police officers in with the few corrupt ones and referring to all of them as "they", IMO.

I read it to mean that a fine would NOT be levied against them for not showing up the first time. I could be wrong.

There was a public event yesterday re the highway shutdown tomorrow, but I don't know if questions were taken. It's scheduled for tomorrow at 3:00 p.m., and activist/attorney Ed Vickers provided details of where to meet-up. Vickers is on staff of the local Ferguson Rep Jamillah Nasheed, who stands behind her man despite his recent arrest:

Well, the ones I mentioned earlier, where I got called on the carpet for using "they." To wit:

MB was a Gentle Giant. DJ and MB were just walking home from the store when the cop stopped and grabbed the Gentle Giant and started pulling him into the car. MB was profiled. He was shot in the back while on his knees surrendering with his hands up. His body was left lying uncovered for hours. He was executed, murdered, and "gunned down in the street like a dog."

And whatever other lies the liars are telling. (I almost said "whatever other lies they're telling," but then I'd get called out again for using "they.")

Other lies might include things like he didn't play football because he was "too timid" (he played offensive tackle). He had a clean record (maybe he only had minor stuff on his record, but it's pretty clear he had a record). He was going to college (he may have been going to trade school, but even that's in question). There have been so many lies so far that I can't keep track of all of them.

I have to wonder if they intentionally are using the term "gentle giant" because it is in reference to the mentally-impaired character Lennie, Steinbeck portrayed in Of Mice and Men and applied to those who commit crimes and don't realize it because of their mental impairment. For whatever reason, Brown had difficulty completing high school. He had no driver's license.

I have to wonder if he was able to pass the driving test but I think he was dangerous and his family was well aware of it, which is why he was crashing on his grandmother's sofa rather than in a bed of his own.

JMO

“I think [John Steinbeck] would be pleased that the world recognizes that Lennie is a gentle giant who is not morally culpable, and that people like Lennie, people who are not the worst of the worst…should never be subject to the death penalty even though they might have caused someone’s death,” she says.

Cochran admits she’s far more comfortable interpreting the law than writing it, and she wishes Texas lawmakers would get around to defining intellectual disabilities for death row appeals. But for now, or at least until the Supreme Court changes it, her ruling—including Lennie Small–is the law of the land in Texas.

Yeah...I'm not digging the "they"

Regardless if it's Ferguson residents, protestors /looters...black verses white... The "haves" verses the "have nots"

I am not digging the lumping.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I had only asked so that I could try to differentiate between who said which purported lies. For example, were they said by the Browns? Protesters? Media? DW supporters setting it up just so it could get struck down?

Thanks again and I think I have a better understanding.

Hmmmm.... it seems to me that even the peaceful protesters are perpetuating the lie that MB was a innocent teen who was viciously shot by a racist cop for no reason, while on his knees surrendering with his hands in the air.

So, yeah.... "they." Sorry if you don't like that, but they're part of the problem too. The protests are based on lies. They absolutely have a right to protest, but that doesn't mean that they're right.

"All Ferguson residents"? No. I'm sure that most Ferguson residents are regular people who are just trying to get on with their lives. They're probably not any happier about the riots and looting and lies than I am.

It will be interesting to see how authorities address this threat to public safety.

I don't think they're saying a warrant won't be issued for failing to appear. They just won't add the new charge with the new fines.

Bernard Ewings, Brown’s uncle, said his nephew’s case was straightforward.
“When you have your hands up to the police you’re surrendering. I don’t care what you do” Ewings said. “That’s the bottom line. This ain’t no mystery.”

I totally understand what you are saying. But at the same time, there is a very large group of people, in Ferguson area, that are promising civil unrest if OW is not immediately arrested. I think that it is logical to use the word 'they' for a group that marches and chants in unison. jmo :cow:

Hm. That "I don't care what you do" is telling.

Mom with Black Power fist again.

Referring to the grand jury proceedings currently underway in the Brown case, Gray said that process should move forward, but only after the arrest of Wilson.

Gray also said the world had become fixated on Brown’s death precisely because he was said to have had his hands in the air.

“That distinguishes this case from any other case around the globe,” Gray said. “Where is the outrage for someone who killed the young man in that position?”
