Activist Eric Vickers says protest a success even though hwy wasn't shut down. Vows shut down will happen soon. #Ferguson #michaelbrown

Of course it was. We were all watching. Because of the arrests (of which I don't have a problem with) they will be able to once again talk about how oppressive LE is. I could be way off but if Larry Rice becomes a player with the protests, it might be another success.

Having said that, I think the police handling of it was a success too. They made targeted arrests with minimal use of force. They protected individuals on the highway. I'd say they were pretty successful too in their aims.

Organizer Eric Vickers: I-70 protesters not inclined to disburse. "I guess we'll just tie up police for another couple hours." #Ferguson

Can't post everything I found about him just now but he refers to himself as a "radicalized" muslim and apparently he lost his law license at one point, so he became an activist, and ran for office. Google "attorney Eric Vickers".

Tyus vs. @ChiefSLMPD. Here we go.

Rachel Lippmann @rlippmann · 15m

Tyus - we question police shootings because it's a state-sanctioned killing.

Rachel Lippmann @rlippmann · 15m

An aunt of Michael Brown is a tenant of Tyus.

Rachel Lippmann @rlippmann · 14m

Tyus - I'm seeing a rush to kill.

Rachel Lippmann @rlippmann · 13m

.@ChiefSLMPD - police should be able to go home if they do their job legally, morally and ethically.

Rachel Lippmann @rlippmann · 12m

Tyus - I wanted to hear you say that citizens should have the right to go home, too.

Rachel Lippmann @rlippmann · 10m

Tyus to @ChiefSLMPD - I'm hearing an arrogance from you that everything is all right.

Rachel Lippmann @rlippmann · 7m

Tyus - should we have a special prosecutor for police cases? @ChiefSLMPD says they have talked about something like that.

Rachel Lippmann @rlippmann · 5m

Tyus asks how many excessive use of force cases have gone to IAD. Dotson says he'll get her that data.

Rachel Lippmann @rlippmann · 5m

Excessive use of force doesn't mean it was necessarily deadly. Just that it was inappropriate for the situation.

Rachel Lippmann @rlippmann · 26s

There are two parallel invest for deadly force. One from the Force Invest Unit goes to CAO. IAD is into policy, goes to @ChiefSLMPD.

Vickers, representing price-gouging gas stations, once sued QuikTrip for selling gas too cheaply.

:hilarious: So it was successful even though they never shut down the highway and then he vows another highway shut down that never happened will happen again??!!

The struggle is real, y'all! :scared:

The struggle to use your brain

I think you are mistaken if you think this was simply about shutting down a highway. If that is all they wanted to do they would not have broadcast what they were doing and when. If all they wanted to do was shut down a highway, they would have marched up the road a few miles away from the police presence and then down to the highway.

I learned a lot last night while listening to the speakers. I posted a quick set of notes I took on their 'requests/demands.'
- want more black officers, city councilmen, mayors, prosecutors....
- want more black owned businesses in Ferguson
-want police to stop 'harassment' of giving them tickets, etc

I really don't see what the city council has to do with those 'demands.' If they want more blacks in office and in uniform, then they need to run for office, apply for the academy, and go the law school. The City Council does not control that

If they want more black owned businesses then start some. It takes initiative and motivation and capital. No one else is going to do it for them. But seeing how some of the business owners have been treated, I wonder if Ferguson would be their 1st choice of location.

As for harassment, that is questionable. Maybe SOME people are being harassed. But I think that many people count routine police interactions as harassment. I got a ticket once for not having my seatbelt on 'correctly. ' My arm was above the belt and I got pulled over and got ticketed. On the way to drop kids off at school. If I was black, I could make that sound very 'discriminating racist' harassment. But he was just doing his annoying job.

THANK YOU, Katie! I wonder what those folks who spoke last night thought the city council was going to do, call up the Department of Businesses to Order and say, "We'd like five new businesses in Ferguson, MO, please. They must all be black owned and we'll need them by next Monday, thanks!"

The (sadly) ironic part is that the solution to ALL of those demands is in the community's own hands: vote, get an education and apply for jobs, and make Ferguson a place that is attractive for new businesses, regardless of who owns them. And why on EARTH do they think ANY new LEO applicants of any color would want to apply in Ferguson or that whole area after this? "Oh, hey, this sounds like a great career choice--lemme go to work in this place that has been made synonymous with police brutality and derided by the national media! And I can rest assured that if I have to shoot someone in the line of duty that the community, community leaders AND government officials will be lining up behind me: with a rope and a shovel. Plus, BONUS--random showers of bricks, molotov cocktails and bottles of pee! Can't WAIT to apply, yay!"

As for potential business owners, I doubt many of them consider a place where shoplifting after muscling around the owner is considered a harmless prank, and the chance of random looting and burning the business to the ground are at the top of list of 'musts' when looking for a location. Of course, I could be wrong. I've been wrong before.

I need an emoticon of someone rolling her eyes so hard that one pops out and goes rolling across the floor under the fridge.

Based on what @caroldanielKMOX tells me, there is an official family response. I'll let that stand. Disregard my private conversation.

I spoke to Michael Brown Sr. today who was holding Brother Shahid's phone. It's misinformation or disinformation that he opposes this action

The freeway was shut down here during a Justice for Andy Lopez protest. In all honesty, it really doesn't accomplish anything, in my observation.

  • #578
If Vickers wanted to shut down I-70, why announce ahead of time where and what time for protesters to meet?

I keep wondering how the disadvantaged of Ferguson got to the protest. Were they and others bussed in?
