INDEPENDENCE, Mo. —
Detectives with the Independence, Missouri, Police Department are involved in a death investigation after a mushroom hunter discovered human remains in a neighborhood in western Independence.

Police said the human remains were found around noon on Tuesday near South Norwood Avenue and West Sheley Road.

According to the police, a mushroom hunter was looking for mushrooms in the area when they stumbled upon the partially decomposed body. It's unclear exactly how long the body had been there before it was found.

The victim's identity has not yet been established. Because the body was found in a partially decomposed state, it may take an extended period of time before police are able to determine a cause of death.

Police said there are no additional details available for release at this time. The investigation remains open as police work to determine the person's identity and a potential cause of death.

That's a pretty dense residential area with a small trail headed through a relatively narrow strip of woods.

My first thought was T'Montez Hurt, but I think the location is too far east of the city. Not sure how he would have gotten there from the Greyhound station downtown.
