If his coat and gloves were in his car, but it was February in Missouri, it sounds like he was injured/killed indoors. If this was some parking lot altercation, he'd likely be in his coat, unless he had a habit of bringing them 'in case' but not wearing them. I'd ask the brother he dropped off if he was wearing them when he last saw him.
Assuming he was inside, where was he likely to have gone if he was going back to pick up his brother after the dance (brother younger than his own 16, so likely not later than 10pm). If not home, where would he spend 2 hours in February - movies, bowling alley, band concert, etc. that he would run into other kids?
