Okay guys i am home. We will IMO know today if this is Kara. I am waiting by the computer all day.

About the clothes, they said they were found near the body but not on. So would it be possible that these are not the clothes of the person there. Sorry guys my mind is going so fast right now

I thought of that too because I knew Kara was wearing jeans.

I could be wrong, but I'll bet the clothing they found was from the victim. I have nothing to base this on, but I just do not feel it's Kara. They said they thought the body had been there from between 2 weeks and 2 months. For it to be Kara, she would have had to be in the area for a bit prior to someone killing her. Anything is possible, and I sure hope it's not her...but I guess we'll just have to wait until the results are known. I've scanned the TV channels and have heard nothing as of yet.

Athletic pants and a knit-type of shirt were found along with the body, police said.

BELTON, Mo. (AP) - Authorities are working to identify a female body found in Belton yesterday.

Authorities hope to determine whether the body is that of Kara Kopetsky, who disappeared May 4th after leaving Belton High School, which is near where the body was found.

The body was found by highway survey crews in thick brush.

The Belton police department knows of only one other missing girl, a teenager who ran away two weeks ago. Police say the body that was found was not her.

###

This narrows it. Unless the body is from someone from out of the area, it does appear it may be Kara.

LB, I read two weeks to several months. Now granted if Kara and she had been there all this time over the hot summer months I can't imagine anything being left but bones. It says secluded area in tall bushes or grass or something so I had wondered about wildlife as well. There's the possibility that she was held somewhere for awhile and would account for many things including the clothes being different. Hopefully we'll know today if it is or isn't her. Id by dental records can usually be done fairly quick compared to dna.

Someone posted other girls missing in the area and there is one from August and another early September. All 4 girls missing considered endangered runaways. Two are within 30 minutes of this location and I don't know about the others. LE is saying they are checking Kara first and there is another missing girl so I suppose they are checking first by the closest. Could even be someone not from the area too.

Excellent point! I thought of that as well.

The difference in clothing is the only thing that would give me doubt, along with a cop's comment about "two months." Wouldn't it be galling if the video of Kara at school was actually from the day before her disappearance but it was mislabeled!

Although there are two reports which are out, they are also quoted as saying "two weeks to SEVERAL months".

It shouldn't be much longer as it sounds as if they will release the results today.

If it is Kara and she was wearing sweats...one could presume she made it home that day and changed to relax before donning her uniform to go to work.

Are you sure those were sweats? All they said was some sort of athletic pants. Could they be something worn underneath jeans?

With this much time involved (since May) if this is Kara, I doubt that LE would be able to obtain the perp's DNA.

I keep scrolling through the channels, but so far, I've heard nothing more. I'd heard the "several" months also, but to me that would be up to three months, and since Kara went missing at the beginning of May, and granted it could very well be her, but it's been five months now since Kara went missing. It could be her...but I hope it's not. However, no matter who the girl is, she's someone's loved one and I feel so sorry for the victim and her family.

That could very well be true.

I believe they said sweatpants in one report. Athletic pants to me would be sweats.

If DNA is present on her clothing or underneath fingernails...they could still recover it after this amount of time. Certain trace evidence can withstand the elements.

I hope you're right and LE can find usable amounts.

If LE has Kara's dental records, and they have had a body since yesterday, shouldn't they know by now whether or not the body is Kara's?

  • #493
Yes, but notification of family comes first. They have to locate, bring them into headquarters, etc. This takes time as there are two sets of parents. They will continue to run additional testing and further prove their findings with the dental records, but I would assume they would tell the family if those dental records are a positive match.

You'd think so...at least I would. If they had the dental records and could positively say the dental records don't match, you'd think they would announce that as soon as possible.

I know, I'm on pins and needles also. I keep checking in every few minutes. Kara looks a lot like my niece.

Nailah Franklin's uncle was telling the media that it was her and then LE reported to not have id'd her yet. Then by the end of the day they confirmed it. I don't know what that was about but I sure hope we know by tonight if it is or isn't Kara.

It's also driving me crazy. I just wish they'd announce something. I called one of the stations and they said they haven't heard a thing yet, but that they are "there." I'm not sure what "there" meant, but I'll make sure and watch at 5:00.

What makes me wonder if it is her, is the dental issue. teedie2 mentioned that they should be able to do a match with the dental records, and they've had that info. So to me, if they could have ruled the body out as being Kara's, you'd think they'd have done that once they looked at the dental records.

If the dental records were a match, I wonder if they'd do any other testing to make sure it's Kara? Or would the dental records be good enough to make an announcement?

I'm still holding out hope that it's not her.
