PRIOR CHILD SEX OFFENDER PLEADS GUILTY TO CHILD ,
FACES AT LEAST 15 YEARS IN PRISON

September 21, 2010

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Sugar Creek, Mo., man who is a prior child sex offender pleaded guilty in federal court today to attempting to distribute and receive child over the Internet and to possessing child .

Martin A. Cordry, 47, of Sugar Creek, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Scott O. Wright to all three charges contained in a March 3, 2010, federal indictment. Cordry remains in federal detention pending his sentencing hearing.

By pleading guilty today, Cordry admitted that he attempted to both download and distribute child over the Internet through a file-sharing program on his computer. Cordry also admitted that he was in possession of child when law enforcement officers seized his computer and digital media.

According to court documents, Cordry was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 1994 for the rape and sodomy of a 7-year-old victim...."

Not certain, at all, whether the "cartoon" images were also found to be illegal, although the PRs certainly mention them. If anyone finds more info on this issue, can you please post. According to this site, they are illegal:

Under federal law (18 U.S.C. §2256), child is defined as any visual depiction, including any photograph, film, video, picture, or computer or computer-generated image or picture, whether made or produced by electronic, mechanical, or other means, of sexually explicit conduct, where:

~the production of the visual depiction involves the use of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct; or

~the visual depiction is a digital image, computer image, or computer-generated image that is, or is indistinguishable from, that of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct; or

~the visual depiction has been created, adapted, or modified to appear that an identifiable minor is engaging in sexually explicit conduct...."

I'd be very interested, Nova, if you've looked at it. It can be found in any mainstream bookstore and most Young Adult/Teen sections of libraries. I'd very much like to hear other's view points. I was very taken aback when a school librarian defended it by saying that, "Hey, anything that'll get 'em to read works for me". That just did NOT fly for me.

I know I'm overly sensitive concerning visuals and children so I'd be very interested reading other's thoughts on the manga or anime form of literature.

I went to grad school in theater and performance studies and about the time I left, it was just becoming "cool" to study anime. Can't say I'm sorry I missed that.

But I can tell you my son, who is a graphic artist and hangs out with cartoonists--pardon me, "graphic novelists"--and the like, has mentioned more than once how shocking he finds anime. His best friend likes to draw headless people with their entrails hanging out, but anime is what bothers him.

The Japanese have a very different history and their moral codes reflect that. (This isn't to say they are more or less moral on average, just different. As far as I know, they do NOT find actual sex with children acceptable, even if they do sell girls' underwear in vending machines.)

The 7 year old girl was his daughter. He lived in the home with his mom. His brother Randy died of throat cancer. He is my EX-brother in law and a very sick person. They should of never let him out.

Please, please know I am so very sorry for your pain and the family's pain. I doubt the 7 year old child will ever truly feel as though there's justice. However, there is hope. I pray she has received some good counseling, and........................................

I was so pleased to see that Cordry was finally sentenced and with no possibility of parole. I still have major concerns that this man was somehow connected with the Mohler men. I remember researching the addresses and they were very close together and their paths seemed to cross in a number of ways. Also interesting to note that seizing the man's computer did nothing to stop him. He simply got another. And another instance of an almost 2 1/2 year turnaround from arrest to sentencing. I still can't figure that out.
