MO - Megan Meier, 13, Mentally Abused, Commits Suicide

  • #161
Well, I guess the Megan had it coming blogger accidentally outed themselves.

The anonymous post dated 9/19 at 8:00 p.m.
http://www.mycrimespace.com/2007/11/16/megan-meiers-tormentors-named/
Is almost IDENTICAL to the blog, however, instead of referring to her as Lori Drew, she refer to her as her mother.
How sad, this is certainly a reflection of what she's learning at home.
Sounds like she and her mother have spent a year around the dinner table justifying their actions. I'd be horrified if one of my girls were involved with something like this!
Somehow, Lori Drew reminds me of Jackie Peterson: Deny, Deny, Deny
And a child being molded in mother's image.

Sad. And so, so dumb - the whole, my boyfriends a computer expert - so dumb.

Oh - and Megan had great taste, dumping that as a friend. Can't imagine what they had in common.

I could never do something to another person, nor their property - under normal circumstances. But - my daughter's killers - all bets are off - I hope I could restrain myself physically, but their property - not likely! That's just not in the realm of reason, that they're such unbelievably lousy people, and still using your garage as storage, and you just hand it over? Hard enough not to return the foosball table with a ticking bomb inside.

The Meiers computer was password protected - only Tina and Ron had the passwords to both the computer itself and to Megan's MySpace account. Things got out of control that day because Tina signed in so Megan could check her MySpace, but then Tina had to go to a dentist appointment. She asked Megan to sign off, and Megan said she would sign off - but that's when everything hit the fan of course.

The anonymous blog post was said to be a fake, reading further down on the comments - the IP address didn't match up to her area.

I happen to think that the Meiers have shown great restraint in their actions.

2 words - Ellie Nessler. I agree with not condoning destruction of physical property and all of that, but if this were my child - all bets are off. :furious:

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but this case was discussed on Fox (Greta??) last night. The lawyers stated that there was a federal law concerning internet harrassment and that this family needed to get a federal agent involved to prosecute. They also mentioned a civil suit. One attorney said that she would sue them for all they were worth. I hope that this family was watching Fox last night. They really need to do something and not let this go. The actions of the neighbors is totally inexcusable, immoral and illegal.

I think one of the articles mentioned that a stumbling block to this was that the last day's messages had been deleted and the FBI was unable to retrieve them. Those were the ones that would have locked Lori Drew away for a while. But they definitely have already had the FBI involved.

As for suing MySpace, as much as I think it is a waste of bandwidth and a black hole for the dregs of society, I have to agree that the family doesn't have a case. They did knowingly break the TOS, even after their daughter violated their own family rules. So they had no reason to believe that she was going to use it for innocent purposes only. I'm not blaming them, I just think MySpace for young kids is possibly the worst parenting move since inviting your one night stand to move in with you and your pre-teen daughter.

Just like any other rule, you can tell yourself you are going to monitor it, but life invariably gets in the way. (Raise your hand if, when your oldest child was born, you swore you'd never let them watch more than 30 minutes of educational TV a day. )

I meant as far as what she did. You can bet that if that happened to my child - I would be very tempted to do what she did (shoot the molester).

You might be tempted, but you shouldn't follow through. She didn't set a very good example for her son and look at the two of them now. It is heartbreaking.

I remember this, and felt sorry for her. There's a movie out there too, right?

What I didn't expect was that she followed this incident up with making and selling meth. What a shame.

I truly have not read of a "case" that has outraged me this much in a very long time. IMO, this woman needs to pay in someway. The Meier's have definitely shown more restraint than I ever think that I could if I were in the same position.

RIP Megan. You are a beautiful girl!

I know there was debate on whether it was right to release the name of the mother who was behind the harassment. Has the mainstream media done this yet? If not, I think they should.

They have released her name. It's Lori Drew.

I know a woman here in my town who I could see doing something like this. She has three daughters, and the oldest is the same age as my oldest daughter. She tells her daughters that they are BETTER than everyone and she expects them to be first at everything since they are so much BETTER all-around than all other kids. The oldest daughter is a monster. Her mom teaches them to step all over other kids to get what they want, to cheat, lie, etc. She and her husband have been known to cheat, as well, and to spread slander about other kids so that their daughters will be chosen for things over the other kids. I can totally see her doing something even more evil like Lori Drew did. :furious:

In wake of teen's suicide, city council criminalizes online harassment

DARDENNE PRAIRIE, Mo. (AP) — City officials unanimously passed a measure Wednesday making online harassment a crime, days after learning that a 13-year-old girl killed herself last year after receiving cruel messages on the Internet.

The six-member Board of Aldermen made Internet harassment a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail. Mayor Pam Fogarty said the city had proposed the measure after learning about Megan Meier's death.

My thoughts too...

While I'll never excuse the Drew's for what they did to Megan, I have to wonder if she was taking any SRRI medication for her depression. There is a very strong link between drugs such as Zoloft. Paxil and Prozac and teen suicide. Since 2004, all TV commercials are required to state a warning about it. My brothers best friend committed suicide in February, 1 week after starting Zoloft...was very sad, leaving behind a wife and 2 kids.

Just something to concider.
