Independence police are searching for a woman who has been missing since Dec. 28 and her nephew, who they believe might know something about her whereabouts.

A family member said the disappearance of Nancy J. Harris, 63, is unusual and that no relatives or friends had heard from her, according to police. She takes medications and has not been in contact with her physician, police said.

The nephew, Bret Springfield, was living with Harris at her apartment until the day she disappeared. Police said they believe he traveled west through Kansas to Perry, Utah, and might be heading to Jerome, Idaho.

Last seen by a 'medical compliance officer'. What is that? I had originally presumed that there was a regular health worker that helped her with her medications (administering and keeping track). Was it more of a 'compliance' issue? What type of illness did Nancy have? Did she have a form a dementia or another type of mental health issue where she would refuse to take her medication?

Could her medical condition contributed to her absence?

She may become confused without her medication, and she needs to eat regularly as a result of her hypoglycemia.

  • Distinguishing Characteristics Caucasian female. Graying brown hair, brown eyes.

Details of Disappearance

Harris was last seen on December 28, 2007, when a medical compliance worker visited her at her home at Brookstone Village Apartments in the 1800 block of Brookstone Village in Independence, Missouri.

She lived with her nephew, Bret A. Springfield. A photograph of Springfield is posted with this case summary. He disappeared at the same time Harris did, but was located later in Idaho. Springfield admitted he withdrew money from Harris's bank account via ATMs, but he says Harris was with him at the time. He said this was the last time he saw her and he doesn't know her whereabouts.

Harris previously worked as a laboratory assistant and dental technician, but she had retired by the time she went missing. Authorities are concerned for her welfare due to her medical needs. She did not drive or own a vehicle at the time of her disappearance, and Springfield's vehicle has been impounded.

Investigators consider Harris's disappearance to be suspicious. Her case remains unsolved.

Very sad that this case appears to be absolutely ice cold. No Justice for poor 5'2" 90 lb Nancy J Harris. I think somebidy took advantage of her mental and physical condition, and "disappeared" her. I have not been able to come up with a motive though

Independence police say they believe that her nephew, Bret A Springfield - who withdrew the max amount from
Nancy's bank account using her ATM on the day she disappeared - might know something about her whereabouts. Apparently, on the day Nancy disappeared, BAS disappeared as well...

It sounds like LE tracked him down by following a sort-of bread crumb trail he left behind by using Nancy's ATM and credit cards on his way up to Idaho. But when LE tracked him down and went up to talk to him, apparently he said he didn't know where Nancy was, - though he was supposedly the last person to see her, and did admit to using her cards

He said the last time he saw her was when he was driving around withdrawing money from various ATM's using her bank cards..

"Investigators consider Harris' disappearance to be suspicious"

So, that's it. That's all thre is. Almost 18 years have passed, and, nothing. Other than the initial "police are searching for" articles that came out just after she was reported missing in late December '07, I have been unable to find any more recent LE updates on the case

The nephew BAS apparently lived with poor confused Nancy. My guess is that he would have had little problem convincing Nancy to maybe go for a ride, run an errand, or go see a doctor.. Jmo, but l think he could have talked her into getting into a car and leaving home.

She obviously was not well. I wonder what reason he gave LE for him driving off with her? Of course the nephew (BAS) may not be involved at all. Maybe LE can re-look at the case though with a cold case team and perhaps re-interview BAS again (I think he now lives in Iola, KS). Maybe it would provide new info

Some questions:

Where did BAS drop Nancy off?

What reason did he give the Independence Police Dept for why he was using Nancy's ATM and CC's? Didn't he have his own ATM and CC's?

Did Nancy have any real assets to speak of?

Was Nancy being prescribed any narcotic medications?

Did Nancy get along with her nephew BAS and her brother RS, who was two years older than her.

From looking online, Nancy has had three different last names: Springfield (at birth and maiden name I presume), Benton, and Harris. I don't know anything about a Mr Benton, or a Mr. Harris. Or any children for that matter.

Were either Benton or Harris married to Nancy (or even still alive) at the time of her disappearance? Just seems there has been no family statements or searches. Maybe she had no family? If so, even sadder.

If BAS was the last person to see her.. and if NJH was in his (or her! car as he went to ATM's using her cards to withdraw cash, why was it BAS' father RS, who reported Nancy missing - and not BAS?

Did RS and Nancy get along?

Did BAS snd Nancy get along?

What motive would somebidy have to "disappear" a mentally and physically disabled 63 year old woman who weighed all of 90 lbs ?

Need Justice for Nancy!

All jmo
