KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The mother of a 2-year-old boy and her boyfriend have been charged in connection with the child's death earlier this month.

Medical exams attributed the death to malnutrition and probable dehydration.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced Monday that 25-year-old Saritza Serrano and 24-year-old Ruben Yepez-Ruiz each face charges of abuse or neglect of a child resulting in death.

The day the boy died, Serrano said, she had given him a bottle with milk and baby food about 8 a.m.

Serrano told investigators that she did not see the boy again until about 5 p.m. when she went upstairs to give him a bath.

She went to the boy’s room and found him unresponsive. Serrano then realized the boy had died.

Serrano called her boyfriend, Yepez-Ruiz about 90 minutes later and told him what happened. Yepez came home shortly after 8 p.m. and called his mother, who told him to call 911.

This is beyond horrible. That poor little baby. As @PommyMommy said, "Why??"

What in the world prevents these monsters from simply giving the child up for adoption?
I will never understand this evil behavior. She could have told her doctor she did not want to raise this baby.

There is nothing stopping these people from giving their babies up for adoption. This baby could have been loved, cared for and treasured.

It is fortunate that the boyfriend called 911 or these charges would not have been laid.

My heart aches for this sweet little toddler.

Rest in Peace, little one. I am so sorry that you were not loved and treasured like you were meant to be.

I just noticed they are only being held on $25,000 bond. I think it should be much higher. This is more than child neglect it is murder, they could have taken the baby to the doctor. This child didn't get malnourished in just one day. jmo
