MO MO - Possible serial killer in St. Louis targeting sex workers, 2021

Thankfully serial murder is on a huge decline over the past 20 yeas or so, what we are seeing now, is more multiple murders that though they may appear to be serial killings, are actually tied into other criminal activity , such as drugs, or human trafficking

In speaking with investigators on some other well known cases, (i wont get into) the prevailing thought is just that , they just appear similar to serial killings, but the motives are completely different

3 victims in 3 days is pretty busy for a serial killer, seems possibly more like a spree killing

I agree..Do you think serial killers are a thing of the past? To easily caught with the technology these days, imo..What do you think will happen to would-be serial killers?

Murders targeting sex workers in St. Louis under investigation

"The bodies of a woman, a teenage girl and a man were discovered over the past two weeks.

Pam Abercrombie, 49, was found dead Sept. 16 on a north St. Louis sidewalk; Marney Haynes, 16, was found shot to death in St. Louis County on Sept. 13; and Casey Ross, 24, was found fatally shot Sunday in a vacant lot."

Assuming Sunday means Sunday September 20th as this article was published on September 25th.

Further in the article, a family member of a victim states that they were not an STW but a "hustler" who did "odd jobs". So perhaps not so much an SK targeting STWs but someone targeting these 3 people for some other reason. Maybe?

Could this be a type of spree killing related to trafficking somehow? There is a quote from one of the victims family members saying that this person was not involved in sex work but was a "hustler who did odd jobs". With all respect, could this have involved drugs?

Do you mean that it's possible/probable that some of these victims are killed as a result of being involved in trafficking? Meaning the manner and cause of death might be similar, location of remains might be the same, victims appear similar due to their line of work etc? Possibly that some of these women are murdered by "pimps" who are involved in organized crime? Or maybe these women are killed by a customer who has a type and a known route or pattern?

It makes sense that those involved in organized human trafficking would treat their victims the same way they would treat anyone else they were trying to get rid of. Like the scenes in "Good Fellas" or "Sopranos" where they drive someone to a cornfield and dump them when they rat or don't pay up.

Idk.

I don't know, I'm thinking more of spree killing, or maybe revenge for some slight..

These crimes occurred September 13th, 16th and 20th. Does that technically count as a spree?

It doesn't say what ties these 3 victims. Most likely the same "customer" and same murder weapon. Obviously not too concerned about their victims being found. Right on the sidewalk. I don't think this was a random SK targeting STWs. Jmo.

Suspect arrested.

St. Louis City detectives link additional murders to suspected serial killer

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- A man accused of multiple homicides in St. Louis County and St. Louis City was arrested and charged for two of the deadly shootings.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged Perez Reed, who turns 26 on November 10, with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree assault and three counts of armed criminal action.
Investigators say Reed shot a person multiple times in the chest on Sept. 12 in St. Louis County. Police didn't release the exact address for this shooting. That victim was left with serious injuries and a permanent disability.

Reed is also accused of shooting Marnay Haynes, 16, at least two times in a "distinctive manner," killing her in the 9900 block of Glen Owen Drive on Sept. 13. Three days later, police said Reed shot a 28-year-old woman in the face in the 4500 block of Adelaide. She was survived the shooting but was unable to speak to detectives.

Within two hours, detectives in north St. Louis linked the suspected serial killer to another woman's death -- 49-year-old Pamela Abercrombie. She was found wounded lying on the sidewalk in the 3800 block of West Florissant. She died at the hospital. Reed is also suspected in the murder of 24-year-old Casey Ross, who was found fatally shot in a vacant lot near the intersection of 15th and Mullanphy just after 12 p.m. on Sept. 19. On Sept. 26, detectives identified a familiar distinctive manner while investigating the shooting death of Lester Robinson. The shooting had similarities to the Haynes' murder.
Officers found shell casings at the three scenes matching the .40 caliber that was on his person when he was arrested. The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said the handgun also matched casings from multiple St. Louis City homicides. Monday morning, St. Louis City detectives will apply charges of two counts of murder and armed criminal action for the crimes that occurred in the city.

An FBI task force arrested Reed. He's being held in federal detention. Should he be transferred to St. Louis County, his bond will be $2 million, cash only.

Without actual case information its impossible to discern what the motive actually is in these cases.

I can tell you that there have been more cases, as of recent of multiple bodies found, where the media took off with the serial killer narrative , before it could be determined whether or not it was (Long island, and Atlantic City for instance)... Having spoken to investigators on BOTH of them I can tell you theres quite a few who feel these cases, weren't the work of a lone killer, and certainly not for the standard, reasons, serial offenders do

Serial killers who's chosen victim type are prostitutes, are almost always familiar to the sex worker community, (this excludes truck drivers/Truck stop prostitute cases) they usually start out as Johns, and will often frequent them prior to and even during the time they are actively killing .

In just about every case, of a serial offender targeting sex workers, on the street, hes also a guy they've seen around and may have even "dated" fairly often, may even live in the area.

In a large majority of cases, he simply uses, them for their services, and returns them unharmed, but in some cases, theres incidents where he became violent but the victim escaped

That lead prostitutes, in many areas to create what they cal "Bad date "sheets , in which they list bad encounters and warn other sex workers to be on the lookout for .

These can be VERY useful in serial murder cases, however, it has to be taken with a grain of salt, because they are often not very detailed, and in many cases, coming from an individual high on drugs.

They'll describe the john, his vehicle , the services, he requested, how much he offered, what he said or did , in some cases, they'll get his tag # however, little usually ever comes of it as it sadly.

Reading this thread I'm totally unsure this killings are related at all. What do the victims or MO have in common? If and what links them all together to Reed? I don't see it (yet) If they don't I would call it a spree....with pauses. Motive? Sometimes there isn't a (logical or explainable) motive. But I'm curious.

The FBI has arrested a man on suspicion of murdering six people in the states of Missouri and Kansas. Perez Reed, 25, was arrested on a train between St. Louis and Kansas City.

EDITORIAL Nov 9, 2021 , 08:16

Reed was carrying a semi-automatic weapon when he was arrested, the bullets of which match those found in several shootings in and around St. Louis. The FBI describes him as a "possible serial killer" who allegedly killed four people in St. Louis, Missouri, and shot and killed two others in Kansas City, Kansas in September and October. Two other victims were injured.

Several victims appeared to have been shot randomly in the street, such as the first victim who was just waiting at a bus stop in St. Louis in mid-September. He survived, but a day later the body of a teenage girl was found dead in the same neighborhood, with a bullet to the head. In the weeks that followed, there were also deaths in similar shootings, each time with the same type of weapon.

The suspect, who lives in St. Louis, was arrested Friday without resistance, and according to his lawyer, he denies all charges, CNN and The New York Times reported. Reed was arrested by the data on his driver's license, which he used to get into the apartment building of one of his victims. Surveillance footage of the building also showed a man with a tattoo on his forehead, which matches the one on Reed's head.

Reed has been charged with murder, attempted murder and transporting a weapon across the state line with intent to commit a crime.

I keep wondering about the policy about carrying weapons.....Allow a "loony" to carry a weapon and things like this keep happening. Sorry, don't want to be offensive. Coming from the Netherlands, I have no clue. Are there any regulations/check ups.

Thank you for taking the time to reply!

Media seems to really interfere and misinform the general public in so many cases. From what I've understood, LISK, Gilgo Beach, Atlantic City etc appear to be the work of more than one serial murderer, no? Or maybe to be more specific, multiple murderers using the same dumping grounds. Also, possibly a similar method based off media reports? Where are the proper investigative journalists?!

Then there are cases like Bruce MacArthur and Robert Pickton (I'm Canadian & had no idea of the sheer volume of horrifying crimes that have occurred here omg it's embarrassing lol). Both of which are exactly as you describe: Regulars who frequent STWs and often let their potential prey go unharmed (or saved for later?).

The thing is, these "people" seem to have it down to a science. It's like they're following instructions. I just watched a short doc on Douglas Garland (the series is called Crime Beat, it's a re-telling of prolific Canadian crimes of recent years). The level that guy went to... If LE hadn't gotten right down into the literal dirt on their hands and knees, they'd never have found proof. A childs tooth that had been charred from fire. That's all that was left.

I've gone off on a tangent, sorry!

Sounds like this guy had his own signature shooting style ;) My Prime Minister has set an intention to ban assault rifles and certain types of hand guns but we're still in the wild west, aren't we?

Since neither of us is from the US, I can only say that the U.S gun laws are lax and vary from state to state. It's probably not really possible to enforce and patrol gun laws, let alone be able to check up on anyone suspected of having an unregistered weapon.

That being said, this guy looks like a gangbanger so any weapons he owns are likely illegal. If someone reported him for being in possession of a weapon, different story. Even then I have a feeling it would take some work in order for LE to look into any reports of people being in possession of illegal weapons. The person would probably have to be able to describe the weapon, where and when they saw it etc. Who would risk telling on anyone with an unregistered weapon who has already killed? Not me.

I used to think the media was only a tool to share information, and in some cases, its a helpful tool , over the years i began to see that they were also an entity with an agenda. That agenda is to create a buzz through fear, anger or interest , or to sway public opinion. There was a period of time where the term "Serial Killer" was the word of the day.

You say "murder" people look, then shrug it off.... You say "serial murder" you incite fear, you get people tuning in to the story, you get the experts, the community, former LE, the serial killer buffs coming out of the woodwork, and why?.... because the media created a stir.

They have also in the past been known to use underhanded means to get restricted information, concerning cases, and have been responsible for releasing sensitive info on certain cases, that have gone unsolved, because they needed to get that scoop.

I saw a special once on sharks (just stay with me here), they were talking about Bull Sharks, who are amongst the most dangerous of all to man, the one expert said "they will often bump prey a few times before they rush in to attack"

Its similar to how certain offenders act, but behaviorally,

NOONE wakes up one day and decides "im going to start killing" , theres path to it, and like that path to it , there a path from it as well, theres path to their victims, and a path from them as well

In order to be able to take a victim, they need to be able to gain acces to them, they need to know how they can get them where then need, do what they need, leave their victim, and most of that comes from trial and error.

Serial crime is a progression, and by the time you see it manifest as a series of murders, rapes, arsons etc...what you are looking at is a process that had a beginning.

thats why the earliest crimes, are so important .

At the root of every serial crime is a "header" if you will that describes WHO they are

If the victims are children, they usually started out molesting children, if the victims are people in their own homes, the killer usually started out as peeping tom that escalated to burglary, and often then rape, if the victims are prostitutes, you are almost always looking at a "John" who the girls often know, Lust/Torture murderers will often start out experimenting with violence in small amounts with their preferred partner type then escalate from there, Random victims (David Berkowitz, or Zodiac) you are usually looking at someone angry at a group of people for any variety of reasons, they usually begin with other outlets such as setting fires, or some type of untraceable violence, such as cruelty to animals etc...

There's always a path to and from and even worse, theres always people who knew these individuals were on that path ...

The thing is, these "people" seem to have it down to a science. It's like they're following instructions. I just watched a short doc on Douglas Garland (the series is called Crime Beat, it's a re-telling of prolific Canadian crimes of recent years). The level that guy went to... There are some pretty amazing people in this field, those who seek justice so forcefully they invent new ways to catch criminals , every day we see another cold case, solved , thats another killer off the streets , another family given not only the justice , but the closure they deserve.

Ive sat in (Parents of Murdered Children) POMC meetings , and have seen the pure anguish on the faces of these people , primarily the ones, whos cases, ramain unsolved, and if that alone doesnt get someone on their feet to get out there and hunt down the individual responsible I dont know what would .

But I can tell you that things have changed, as the media has set its sights on LE, Police reform is the new "buzz word" , departments are seeing record numbers of officers, taking early retirement, and departments are struggling to fill recruitment needs.

Training and equipment, as well as starting salaries have all been cut through the "De-fund" movement .

Philadelphia for instance, is going through this right now, and that city is on the verge of collapse, Ill leave it at that.

We are losing THOUSANDS of highly trained experienced dedicated investigators each week, because LE is now in the cross hairs of the media .

So many cases, are going to go unsolved , and will probably never be

Noone "Allows" them to carry a weapon, as a matter of fact, most homicides committed with a firearm in the US are committed with illegally obtained firearms, by individuals who would most likely not be able to obtain a firearm legally to begin with.

Remember you are dealing with criminals, they dont obey laws to begin with , illegal firearms are readily available on the streets, and are impossible to control, because no one knows who has them, theyre a multi million dollar black market industry for them so you will never be rid of them, theres already billions of firearms in circulation in the US , who knows how many stolen firearms are out there , and people nowadays can actually 3d print one, and buy the parts to build one (which the purchase of the parts are legal) themselves if they cant, therefore its impossible to control illegal firearms, and who obtains them illegally.

You can say "ban them", .....but they're illegal therefore theyre already banned, but that doesnt mean they cant get their hands on them , thats why the "gun control" movement makes ZERO sense in this country

Laws only affect those who obey them to begin with, those that dont will do whatever they want.

The only ones it would affect is legal gun owners, who have legally purchased firearms, and have no criminal background. Thats who will have their firearms confiscated if a grab were instituted.

Not the ones in the hands of the criminals.... theyll still have theirs

It makes totally sense to me, the way you explain it. I learned something today (again :)). Thank you very much for your interesting replies. I really think it's an asset to have you "on board". I can't remember seeing you around a lot on WS. Maybe we are in different threads? Are you especially interested in this case? If so, may I ask why?

Couldn't it also be said that guns and drugs go together? The weapons trade is probably even more dangerous than trafficking. Can't have one without the other! How else would these guys protect their stash, their property, their people etc?

I'd like to know how illegal weapons make it into Canada. I know it's through smuggling but how? (I've seen that Border Security show lol thankfully they employ dogs  ). Not to mention what is legal! Why we were ever *legally*selling semi automatic weapons and assault rifles is beyond me.

Unfortunately "True Crime" is trendy. In some ways it's good that so many people are interested, all the more eyes but IMHO it's wrong to profit from the suffering of others and in that way, the media needs to do better.

Excellent point regarding sharks! I tend to forget the initial bumps and occasional run-in's are "exploratory". And I've been bumped into by a shark IRL. It's terrifying to say the least. Land sharks are even more disturbing. They know how to drive

When I saw footage of the forensic anthropologists processing the Pickton Farm, I became fascinated with how technicians process all the materials. Seeing the investigators locate that tooth in the grass was incredible. It's crazy though, the length some killers will go to in order to conceal their crimes. Even once caught, their withholding of information just speaks to their sadistic, narcissistic nature. I can't fathom how the victims families must feel. At least there are places like this site where victims and their cases are always being looked at by someone. Even if we're just regular everyday people, there's someone out here telling their stories.

So here's another question: When we see someone who is heading down "The Psycho Path" what can we do? Because there have been a number of individuals in my life experience, I've met and been able to spot it a mile away. One kid in particular who went on to shoot several people before killing himself. I had a bad feeling and tried to tell someone about his suicidal talk but nothing was done. He ended up obtaining his license, bought his own gun and went out shooting. How could that have been prevented? He was 19 with no record or known history. Of course we know different, there were most likely signs that people overlooked in this kids past. But my own gut said "this is going to be trouble" and I couldn't stop it.

There's another guy in my hometown who has a history of peeping, unlawful entry, voyeurism etc (here GUILTY - Canada - Bradley Priestap, Western University peeping tom, London, Ont, 2014 ). He's due to get out of prison in 2 years. I've had interactions with him, spotted him at bars and various places prior to his arrest/conviction. Once I spotted him in a Victorias Secret where he was promptly removed. My fear is what he might get up to upon release o_O

I know there are a number of issues in the U.S.A, certain states worse than others especially since the BLM movement. There are issues within law enforcement here in Canada as well. Not to mention our military. It's a real mess but it's not surprising to discover corruption within government institutions.

It's upsetting knowing true crime and cold cases have become so popular and yet the funding to keep someone on the case isn't available. Because people are taking media into their own hands and using it as a tool for education and spreading awareness, people are becoming angry about what they learn. We didn't have Go Fund Me or Facebook Missing Persons groups 20 years ago. In many cases, if it weren't for the people directly involved we'd be waiting for the 6 o'clock news to tell us what was important.

To your last sentence, I dunno... Here in Canada the unmarked graves of hundreds of Indigenous peoples were recently discovered and are currently in the process of being given a "proper" burial. I've read that certain diseases (fevers etc) can be detected in skeletal remains. While every individual might not ever be named and COD might not be determinable in each case, each victim has been honored and remembered. While it's not the same as an unsolved murder, it was/is a crime that went undetected for many years, finally being rectified. My point being there is always a small sliver of hope for the future.

Remember this ......Theres ALWAYS SIGNS, its all whether or not you know how to or dare to read them.

The only way to prevent personal cause violence from happening is to get as many eyes on it as early as possible, when it comes to the human psyche, bad things grow in dark places , as my grandmother used to say about injuries you "gotta let the air get at it"

Parents and immediate family are the first line of defense against tragedy.

They have to be involved enough in their children's lives that they can spot things that are out of sorts if you will . But some are either unaware of what they are looking at as a potential disaster, they may feel they have the situation in hand, or they simply turn a blind eye to it , and in even worse cases, they contribute to the mess through their own such as physical, psychological or sexual abuse .

But for a parent to be able to prevent future atrocities , they need to first be able themselves to ADMIT their child has a problem ... Not at all as common as it sounds, and from there actually TAKE ACTION to get the child the help they need, and then SEE IT THROUGH!!

This may mean invasion of their privacy, it may mean spying on your kids, it may mean involving psychiatric care, it may mean getting Law Enforcement involved, but this is how you derail fledgling offenders .

A parent needs to be able to guide a child through all types family dynamics, for ex in cases,of divorce, it befalls BOTH parents to help guide their child or children through the process, and transition into the new family dynamic .

In many cases, children are left to figure things out themselves, and they almost always get it wrong.

Identifying behavioral red flags can be tough, but in most of the cases, ive seen after talking with parents of these offenders, there is ALWAYS something they "Shouldve listened to my gut" about, or acted upon when they discovered something their child was involved in .

Sue Kliebold, mother of Columbine shooter Dylan Kliebold , actually hosted a Ted talk where she explains how she had no idea what her son was doing, yet goes on to talk about how she saw bomb making, components, and caught her son with a duffel bag with the a rifle barrel sticking out of it .... and said she thought nothing of it until hindsight.

15 people died and 24 more were injured because NO questions were asked about glaring red flags.

Lionel never thought anything of his sons fascination with the bones of the dead mice he had caught in the mouse traps in his home, nor did he think much of his sons glaring lack of friends , his drinking beginning at age 13, or bringing home and dissecting road kill, because to Lionel and his wife it all had to do with their sons fascination with science, primarily, anatomy and physiology.

When the family decided to move , their son protested, and despite several red flags, such as his drinking that began as an adolescent , his lack of friends, his almost constant social isolation, and his growing obsession with dissection his son they decided to leave the 15 yer old to stay in their old house to live by himself .... His son Jeffrey (Dahmer) would go on to murder , dismember, and cannibalize, 17 young males . He committed his first murder just a week after graduation from HS.

Dispite his repeated refusals, William Kinkel finally caved, to his son Kip , had kept at his parents relentlessly until they bought him a 9mm handgun he had wanted so badly. The important part to note here is that Kinkel was already suspended from his HS for bringing a loaded handgun into his school at age 15.

William Kinkel admitted he was "afraid" of his son

Kinkel would go on to thank his parents by murdering them both , then setting his sights upon Thurston HS where he gunned down 2 more people wounding an additional 25

While in custody, Kinkel was able to retrieve a knife he had taped to his leg , he then tried to stab a police officer begging the officer to kill him.

and thats just a few. cases.....

The next line of defense is peers and teachers, children will often reveal their true colors around peers, the opinion of their peers of the individual also speaks into the type of relationships they have with others

In all of the above cases, their peers knew of the individuals violent remarks, and in some cases, intent . They in most cases, would describe the individual as odd.

Dahmer had few if any friends and drank scotch from his jacket pocket right in class

the Columbine shooters, also had few if any friends, referred to themselves as the "trench coat mafia" and spoke of violence and weapons often, to many of the other kids in their school, as a matter of fact in a Class photo of their class both Kilebold and Harris can be seen in the Photo pointing their fingers at the camera in a fashion of holding a gun.. yet no questions were asked

Kinkel was described, by his peers as "strange and morbid" , boasted about joining the army after graduation just to "see what it was like to kill someone" . During a class project once, he gave a how to on how to make a bomb....yet no questions were asked.

Teachers, are an adult eye to see how these interactions play out on a daily basis , and should report anything out of the ordinary , they will know intimately the struggles their students have with learning, which is an indicator of possible future, trouble .

They key is to identify, then actually DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT .

Lets just say I know a thing or two about certain types of offenders/offenses

ive been around ws awhile, usually review cases only by request but am happy to give some insight into behavioral analysis , criminology, forensics etc
