I don't think he was homeless because his socks were expensive. Usually when people donate socks to shelters, they're cheap and come in decent multipacks. Gold Toe seem to run in the $15-25 range for like 6-8 pairs.
I'm trying to figure out how someone would end up with a LION pen. I wonder if he worked for them, applied there or filled out an app using their pen and just nicked it, ordered uniform equipment from them (maybe they send swag with their orders), modeled their uniform for a photoshoot, worked for an org or volunteered for something that allowed him to order through them (like Conservation Education - Woodsy Owl or https://www.state.sc.us/forest/uniformform.pdf), picked it up at an info/merch table at a trade show...They have physical locations in OH and NY, but hire in a few other states.
JB Battle Uniform Company has a physical address in Oklahoma City, which is an 8 hour drive from St. Louis.
The pen in combination with the tie makes me think he was in law enforcement, or wanted to be. The unconnected headphones and beanie makes me wonder if he was a private investigator. Some companies give beanies as part of an equipment package to field guys. I can't imagine it wouldn't set off alarm bells if he didn't check in with a manager, so he could have been working independently. Most PIs don't wear suits, but if he was following someone commuting home on a train or something, he wouldn't have stood out in it. License requirements vary state to state, so his prints wouldn't necessarily be in a system like a LEO's would be. Just spitballing.
