Walk commemorates missing boy

Before Theda Thomas began a walk Saturday morning to mark the seventh anniversary of the disappearance of her son, Christian Ferguson, she prayed with friends and family by the pay phone where he was reported missing.

One van carried a bench showing the pictures of several missing children. Christian's picture was displayed, as was that of Gebar Byrd Jr., a baby who went missing in March and whose father has been charged with his murder - although Gebar's body has not been found - as well as the murder of the child's mother.

Man charged in killing of girlfriend, their young son

A man was charged today with murdering his girlfriend, who was found floating in the Mississippi River, and their young son.

[snip]

The charges marked the first official acknowledgment that the child, Gebar Byrd Jr., 23 months old, is dead.

[snip]

A statement from St. Louis police said that on March 23, the suspect pushed Rodriguez into the river, near Riverview and Spring Garden Drive, as she held the toddler in her arms. Police said he pushed them "through mud, branches and logs" and that "eventually, neither she nor the baby resurfaced."

I'm just catching up on this case now. How awful..... I'm wondering if Byrd confessed. He must have for LE to have those details.

Rip Yasmin and Gebar. And may justice come swiftly and sharply to the selfish 🤬🤬🤬 who took your lives.

Gebar Byrd Jr.

Endangered Missing from University City, Missouri since March 22, 2010

Age: 23 months -- Height: 2'3" -- Weight: 26 lbs -- Hair Color: Black -- Eye Color: Brown

Gebar was last seen in University City, Missouri on March 22, 2010. He lived with his mother, Yasmin Rodriguez, and father, Gebar Byrd Sr. His parents had been together for about six years, but never married. According to Gebar Sr., Yasmin took Gebar and left after an argument. He claimed she had done the same thing a year before and stayed with relatives for a month, so he was not concerned. Yasmin's relatives reported Yasmin and Gebar Jr. missing on March 28.

Yasmin's body was found in the Mississippi River in St. Louis, Missouri on April 9. Authorities stated there were no obvious signs of trauma, and the body had been there for some time. In late May, Gebar Sr. was charged with murdering her and Gebar Jr. Investigators believe he pushed Yasmin into the river while she was holding Gebar Jr., and they both drowned. They stated that he confessed.

Gebar Sr. is awaiting trial. Gebar Jr's body has never been found.

Friday gave Gebar Byrd the maximum possible sentence for drowning his girlfriend and their toddler son in the Mississippi River, saying not even an animal would do what he did.

Byrd, 27, was sentenced to life in prison for second-degree murder, and seven consecutive years each on charges of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment and second-degree domestic assault.

She said the family believes the baby is still alive somewhere, because they never found his birth certificate and other important documents went missing.
